Watchful Woman Holds a Lamp at Dawnby emmanuel_higgins

Luke 12:35

Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;

The verse pictures servants dressed and ready, waiting for their returning lord so they can open to him at once whenever he knocks at an unknown hour. To have loins girded is to be clothed with truth and fitted for active service, and to have lights burning is to keep faith and love alive in constant watchfulness. Such readiness is diligent waiting, watching, and working at the duties entrusted during his absence, not idle expectancy or careless slumber, and it cannot be gained in a moment but grows through daily love for God, learning of Jesus, prayer, and grace received from above. The lamp is kept from flickering only by a continual supply of holy oil from the Holy Spirit and a living connection with God, with the church clothed in the white robe of Christ's righteousness. That inner readiness shows outwardly in faithful stewardship of means for the poor and the mission, in watching for souls who must give an account, and in a clear witness of good works, speech, and action that shines amid moral darkness so others glorify God.

Girded Loins and Burning Lights

Girded loins are the dress of servants made ready for active service, loins girded with truth and girded for action, with lamps lit to welcome the Lord immediately at his return at an unexpected hour. This readiness is spiritual watchfulness that resists slumber and indolence and faithfully uses the privileges provided while waiting. It stands prepared even to meet the enemy while wrestling against the powers of darkness.

Burning lights are a living, watchful faith kept alive, shown in constant faith and love. They require guarding against spiritual dimming, neglect of prayer, and slumber, and against letting riches or divided service to God and mammon distract from preparing to meet the Master.

Burning and trimmed lamps are a clear, living witness to the saving power of truth that shines in good works so that men glorify the Father in heaven. That shining is practical godliness made publicly visible, revealing the light of God through speech and action wherever one goes. It is Christ's light given by God rather than one's own, shining through earnest work for the salvation of souls and help for those who do not know the truth. It is kept by holding to affirmative, gathering truths through much study, earnest prayer, and heart consecration, refusing to meet opposition with argument or dwell on negative points, and trusting watching angels to impress opposers.

Keeping the light burning means having the truth firmly held, heeding warnings and holding firmly to the word in order to stand in the trying times ahead. Bible instruction and books on Bible subjects teaching the doctrines of Scripture equip and establish for that standing and for ready service and witness.

For teachers, the trimmed and burning lamp is perfected Christian character made the great aim in themselves and in their students. That character shines as a clear and distinct light to students, and its rays extend beyond the classroom to the homes and neighborhoods where students live and far beyond into the moral darkness of the world.

Servants Awaiting Their Lord

The verse pictures servants waiting for their returning lord, prepared and spiritually ready with lamps burning to welcome and receive him whenever he comes. This readiness is alert watchfulness for the Son of man, who comes at an unexpected hour, and for the Lord's return from the wedding with lamps kept burning while they wait. The lord returns from the wedding, which takes place in heaven beforehand; his coming therefore marks a change in the position and work of Christ as great High Priest in heaven in relation to the marriage of the Lamb.

Readiness means being prepared to open to him immediately when he comes and knocks, like children of light and men waiting for their Lord to return from the wedding. It is living in constant readiness with loins girded and lights burning, dressed and ready for action with lamps lit, so as to welcome him at once.

The Son of man comes at an unexpected, unknown hour not thought of, so constant watchfulness is required. Because the exact hour is not known, the second coming is ever to be kept before the church in vigilant readiness joined with earnest, diligent service rather than careless neglect, idle contemplation, or idle expectancy. Servants must therefore stay spiritually ready and actively faithful, doing life's duties diligently while they wait.

Servants found watching whenever he comes, even in the second or third watch of the night or at an hour not thought of, are blessed, made to sit down to meat, and served by the Lord himself, the Master girding himself to honor them. His coming is drawing nigh and will soon end with It is done, so his people must prepare the way for him. That nearness calls for living ready and alert with lamps trimmed and burning, faithfully using the goods entrusted to them.

Active Watchful Readiness

Readiness is active faithfulness in doing life's duties diligently in service to God while waiting for the Lord's return, not careless neglect and not idle contemplation. It is putting the whole heart into service instead of striving in a tame, listless way without religious interest, giving oneself to daily prayer and watchfulness and to earnestly seeking the Lord so as to live and practice the truth with supreme love to God and to those for whom Christ died, and growing spiritually as sons and daughters prepared for His coming. It is faithfully doing the work entrusted during His absence, pictured by girded loins and burning lights and joined to waiting, watching, and working for His coming. Because the exact hour is unknown, constant watching must be joined with earnest work rather than idle expectancy, purifying the heart by obedience, working earnestly for the salvation of others, and giving the truth specially needed now.

Such watching resists spiritual slumber and indolence, using faithfully the privileges provided and keeping faith alive as readiness for service. It guards against spiritual dimming, neglect of prayer, and slumber, and refuses to let riches or divided service to God and mammon distract from preparing to meet the Master, keeping life shining through constant faith and love. The inner life must be continually fed so the light does not grow dim, by watching, praying, and waiting, staying alert at the post of responsibility and ready to serve.

This readiness cannot be gained in a moment but requires sustained waiting, watching, and working. It cannot be acquired at the last moment, but comes through daily love for God and truth, learning of Jesus, and receiving grace from above, with faith nourished daily and expressed in faith, love, and patience while adding light to the light of others. Careless or flickering faith leaves a person unprepared.

It means living as pilgrims and strangers whose citizenship is above, moving out by faith and keeping the heart with perpetual vigilance and jealousy lest it be estranged from God. That watchfulness builds only a plain, neat tabernacle without needless adornment and free from debt, gives sacrifice without ostentation or display, hides self in Jesus, hungers and thirsts after righteousness, and walks in lowliness where sanctification of the Spirit brings self-abasement. It trains children and youth not to live to please themselves or court praise.

In this day of preparation it means awakening to a true sense of responsibility, showing courtesy and reverence to God, and serving under Christ's banner with the heavenly host on one's side. It stands ready like those waiting to open immediately when He knocks, giving the world bright, clear, living evidence of the saving power of truth and a correct representation of the great work ahead. Such readiness brings ever-increasing faith and joy proportionate to the greatness of the truth believed and keeps faith unmarred by error, so believers are complete in Him who is head of all principalities and powers.

Spiritual Supply for Readiness

The lamp is kept from flickering only by a continual supply of holy oil from the two olive trees, which is the Holy Spirit poured into the minds of believers to nourish faith, love, and patience and to make them co-workers with heavenly agencies and shining lights in the world. That burning lamp is an ongoing, active spiritual life, a faith nourished daily by the Holy Spirit and expressed in faith, love, and patience, with Christ's followers adding their light to that of others while they watch, pray, wait, and stay alert at the post of responsibility. Careless or flickering faith, an inner life allowed to grow dim, leaves a person unprepared, for readiness cannot be acquired at the last moment but comes through daily love for God and truth, learning of Jesus, and receiving grace from above.

Keeping the lamps trimmed and burning means maintaining a living connection with God, the source of spiritual growth, so that fresh grace is continually received. Without that connection there is no readiness for the harvest and no added grace in times of special need. Readiness also means the church putting on her beautiful garments, the white robe of Christ's righteousness, so as to be ready and waiting for the summons.

Such readiness prepares people to stand in the trying times ahead through truth firmly held and light kept burning. Bible instruction and books on Bible subjects teaching the doctrines of Scripture establish them in truth and make them ready to serve and bear witness.

Keeping the soul's lamp trimmed and burning calls for spiritual growth through much study, earnest prayer, heart consecration, personal piety, and active overcoming of defects of character in combination with God's power, and God supplies increased light, strength, and help as the need is met. It means holding firmly to the affirmative, gathering truths and to the word, heeding warnings, and remaining ready to serve, refusing to meet opposition with argument or to dwell on negative points, trusting watching angels to impress opposers. Ministers especially are to cultivate personal piety in this way and let practical godliness and bright rays shine forth in good works and public labor, so that men see and glorify the Father in heaven.

Faithful Stewardship and Witness

Readiness is faithful stewardship of means, refusing to follow the customs and practices of the world in using money, refusing to lay up earthly treasure or settle down in ease with riches to eat, drink and be merry, but selling what can be spared and giving alms to provide unfailing treasure in heaven. It is strictly following the example of Jesus in investing the Lord's goods to bless humanity, helping the poor, the needy, the orphan and the fatherless, and establishing missions in all parts of the world, rather than hoarding wealth in expensive mansions or bank stock. Setting the heart on heavenly treasure rather than hoarded wealth belongs to being dressed and prepared with lamps alight, and faithfully using the goods He has entrusted, because where treasure is the heart will be also. Without this individual sense of sacred responsibility there is constant danger that Satan will divert the Lord's money into forbidden channels and rob God's treasury, and those who so watch and invest means in the Lord's cause and help perishing souls instead of incurring guilt by indolence will be blessed whenever He comes, even in the second or third watch of the night, and the Lord Himself will serve them, for the Son of man comes at an hour not thought of.

Readiness is the solemn, serious work of watching for souls as those who must give an account, staying watchful, prepared and active in that soul-watching work rather than in idle expectancy. Those who watch purify the heart by obedience to the truth, quicken their zeal because the Lord is at the door, cooperate with divine intelligences in working for the salvation of souls, consecrate all they have and are to the Master's service, and speak words of encouragement, faith and hope amid busy life. They are the faithful and wise servants who give the Lord's household the truth specially applicable now, giving the special warning for this generation as Enoch, Abraham and Moses declared the truth for their time, and doing His commandments and bearing much fruit as branches of the true Vine. Such readiness cannot be gained in a moment but requires sustained waiting, watching and working, and urgently using means and effort to save perishing souls and advance neglected mission work before opportunity to labor passes forever, for those found so watching when the Lord comes in the second watch or third watch or at an hour not thought of will be blessed, made to sit down to meat, and served by the Lord himself.

Readiness is shown by letting Christ's light, given by God rather than one's own, shine through earnest work for the salvation of souls and help for those who do not know the truth. It is resisting frivolity, living out God's Word, revealing light through speech and actions wherever one goes, faithful service, and teaching the gospel simply and kindly to all people, keeping lamps burning amid the world's moral darkness and unbelief and remaining ready and faithful in witness. Keeping the light steadily burning by using knowledge of Bible truth aright and revealing the light within brings success in place of failure and avoids exerting a destroying influence for want of light. It shows the line of demarcation between God's people and the world, shows harmony with heaven, and shows by works that conversion is genuine, showing that piety is better than ungodliness, faith than unbelief, and liberality than selfishness, done without boasting and without airs of superior piety. This readiness means standing prepared to meet the enemy while wrestling against the powers of darkness, girded for action and with lamps burning at all times.

For ministers, teachers and institutional workers, trimmed and burning lamps mean greater earnestness in all ministerial work, being fervent in spirit in serving the Lord, not living merely a quiet prayerful life of meditation alone but combining vigilant waiting with vigilant working as living wide-awake energetic Christians. It is communicating truth to people by earnest faithful effort, doing everything without delay to save sinners, seeking souls, praying for them, laboring for them, making earnest and intense appeals, offering fervent prayers and changing tame spiritless petitions into petitions of intense earnestness, waking into spiritual activity and daily revealing a determined purpose to be good and to do good, filled with zeal to give to others the blessings of the truth. It is laboring unselfishly to advance the interests of the Lord's institution while remaining spiritually prepared and vigilant, letting practical godliness and good works shine so the light shines in the home and is seen by others, leading them to glorify God, and making the work publicly visible with truth going forth openly and actively. When that light does not shine in the home and before others, the person is failing in the work God has given and putting personal interests before eternal ones. Each worker must keep his own light trimmed and burning and shining amid moral darkness, even in an awfully wicked city dead in trespasses and sins, doing his best in his own place, for God gives different men different appointments and gifts to reach different classes, and each is to work without hindering another's opportunity, trusting God to give the increase.
