Luke 12:53
The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
Allegiance to Christ and truth can set even the closest family members against one another, father against son, mother against daughter, and mother-in-law against daughter-in-law. This family opposition arises from the broader conflict between good and evil, in which every person stands either for Christ or against Him.
The verse also describes the family and social breakdown that follows when love to God and love for one another are discarded. Satan works upon the natural egotism of the human heart and upon uncontrolled wills and violent passions never brought under the control of God's will, so that those who lose connection with God make centers of themselves and each demands his own way. The result is mutual distrust, kingdoms divided against themselves, the loosening of the sympathetic cords of brotherhood, and confusion with brother rising against brother, sister against sister, parents against children and children against parents, relatives betraying one another, secret plotting to destroy life, and crime, destruction, misery, and death on every hand. This condition stands as an object lesson warning Christians to avoid the first step that would open the way for such principles to enter the church.
