Jesus Teaching in the Temple as Leaders Plotby CBPepper
19:48Luke 19:48
And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.
In the temple Jesus was teaching day by day while all the people hung closely and eagerly upon His words to hear Him. The chief priests and rulers with all His opponents could find nothing to do and no way to act against Him, because the whole people were very attentive to hear Him. Their hostility was stirred because the people preferred His teaching to theirs, and that same preference would in later times also provoke prejudice among religious leaders. Yet His effort to reform the corrupt temple priesthood still had to be made, and by that work He gave an unbelieving people evidence of His divine mission.
Opposition to sacred truth works continually, so the helplessness of His enemies then calls for watchfulness now, since failure to discern the working against truth can cost the chance of eternal life. He who so held the people is the Son of the living God, who laid aside His royal robe and crown and clothed His divinity with humanity so that humanity could lay hold upon Him and through living faith lay hold upon His divinity as Saviour. To accept such a Christ requires self-denial, and those who follow Him must work out their faith with fear and trembling.
