Luke 20:28
Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man’s brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man’s brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
The law set out here required that when a man died without children, his surviving brother was to take the widow as wife in order to raise up offspring in the dead brother's name. The Sadducees brought forward this requirement as a test case against Christ, and with other opponents they framed such questions to entangle Him and to attack faith in the resurrection. Their argument rested on the supposition that those raised would come back with the same physical bodies and earthly appetites, so that marriage ties and other earthly relations would simply continue as before. Christ met these ensnaring inquiries with direct and discerning replies that shed valuable light upon the hearers and planted seeds of truth among them.
