Luke 20:43

Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

David spoke by the Spirit when he called the Messiah his Lord and described God's command for the Messiah to sit at His right hand until His enemies are subdued. That enthronement at God's right hand was to continue until God made those enemies subject to Him. The footstool picture is the promise that Christ's enemies will be brought under His authority beneath His feet. To be made a footstool means to be subdued and made subject to Him.

The Messiah is therefore not merely David's human descendant but also David's divine Lord. As David's Lord He is the divine Son of God, greater than a merely human son of David. Jesus used this truth as a warning that rejecting the Son of God as Redeemer brings judgment. Those who refuse to receive Him face the doom foreshadowed by the warnings to the Jews unless they repent.
