Luke 20:45

Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,

Jesus spoke to His disciples in the hearing of all the people, setting His warning about the scribes before both the disciples and the listening crowd. This occurred during His final day of teaching in the temple, while the crowds watched His dispute with the religious leaders and listened eagerly. By addressing His disciples publicly at that moment, He also warned and instructed the people themselves.

In that public address He exposed the religious leaders, whose strict attention to visible religious forms and outward displays of piety concealed greed and exploitation. They used those displays to appear devoted, yet they imposed heavy burdens on widows and took their property. In exposing their conduct before all, He urged the people not to imitate it.

The warnings and illustrations given in this public teaching apply in every age to those who refuse to receive Him as their Redeemer. Unless they repent, the doom foreshadowed by the examples will be theirs.
