Luke 21:33

Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

The saying stands within Christ's warnings and prophecy concerning the destruction of Jerusalem, the events leading to the kingdom of God, His coming, and the end of the world. Heaven and earth will pass away, but His words will endure forever, remaining true and certain and never failing. Not one jot or tittle of God's Word will fail, even in the smallest detail. This was spoken against the temple's magnificent walls that seemed indestructible, yet they would be thrown down, while Christ's words would remain certain through Jerusalem's destruction and the world's final judgment.

Its predictions about shaking and destruction are being fulfilled in the present, as seen in earthquakes at Mountain View and San Jose, showing the words mean very much for the present time. The endurance of God's Word means His purpose is carried out through history, even through people who think they are pursuing their own aims. Such persons do not understand the truth their actions confirm, yet their role does not make their choices forced.

Because the day will come upon people unexpectedly, the certainty of the words calls people to take the warnings seriously and heed them. They are to watch and pray and remain watchful for the events leading to the kingdom. They are to repent and obey while mercy and probation remain.
