Luke 22:36

Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

Jesus spoke these words to His disciples on the last evening He spent with them, after the last Passover supper. They were joined to Peter's presumptuous declaration that he was ready to go with Him to prison and to death, and to the warning of Peter's coming fall. In that setting they teach the need for strong, persevering faith and for entire trust in Christ as Leader. Strength is shown to lie not in what poor, finite beings suppose they are able to do, but in what Christ will do for them. Because of this warning against self-reliance, the words must be studied carefully by all who are full of assurance and self-confidence that their own course is right.
