Luke 22:37

For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.

Jesus spoke these words to His disciples on the last evening He spent with them after the last Passover supper. In them He declared that what was written about Him must yet be accomplished in Him, that He would be reckoned among criminals, because the things concerning Him were reaching their end. Though sinless, He was numbered with transgressors on the cross. By bearing that place among transgressors, He released those held captive by sin and by Satan's power.

The verse is to be studied carefully together with the whole record of that evening, including the betrayal, the dispute over who would be greatest, the call to serve, the promise of the kingdom, and Peter's claim that he was ready to go with Him to prison and to death. In that setting it stands as a warning against self-assurance, self-confidence, and presumption like Peter's fall. It teaches the need for strong, persevering faith and entire trust in Christ as leader. Strength lies not in what poor finite beings suppose they can do, but in what Christ will do for them.
