Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.
Jesus spoke these words during His trial before the council, the Sanhedrin, in answer to their questioning whether He is the Christ, while His accusers questioned and condemned Him. From then on, after this suffering, humiliation, trial and the cross, the Son of man would be exalted to sit at the right hand of God's power in a future place of authority and honor with God, sharing God's authority.
In this answer He affirmed His divine authority and the certainty of His coming vindication, solemnly warning His judges that despite their rejection and condemnation of Him His claim to be the Messiah would be vindicated. His statement gave them further evidence and left them without excuse. The council treated His words as sufficient testimony and grounds for condemning Him as claiming to be the Son of God.
The One arraigned before an earthly tribunal would be recognized as seated at God's right hand and appointed as supreme Judge of heaven and earth to judge the whole world. At the final judgment His words before His accusers will stand as a clear witness to His authority to pronounce each person's reward or punishment according to their deeds. His enthronement and future coming in the clouds with power and glory, escorted by angels, will reverse the scene before His accusers, when He will pronounce judgment on those who condemn and abuse Him.
The account to which the verse belongs continues after the council condemned Him, when He was brought to Pilate for legal confirmation of the sentence. There the accusations against Him were contradictory and worthless, and Pilate declared Him faultless.
