Jesus Sends Peter and John to Prepare the Passoverby CBPepper
22:7Luke 22:7
Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.
The day of unleavened bread had come, when the Passover lamb had to be killed or sacrificed. The verse opens the account of arranging to eat that Passover meal with the disciples before suffering. That meal was prepared and eaten before suffering came. The Passover supper was eaten together with the disciples before going with them to Gethsemane.
As they assembled for the meal, a dispute arose among the disciples over which of them should be counted greatest. At that same gathering were established both the Lord's Supper and the ordinance of foot washing. That Passover meal was the last celebration of the old festival, with the Lord's Supper instituted in its place. By instituting it in place of the Passover, a memorial of the sacrifice was established to be observed by the church through all time.
On the very day the Passover was eaten, the true Paschal Lamb Himself was to be sacrificed.
