The Empty Tomb With the Stone Rolled AwayBible World
24:2Luke 24:2
And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.
Early on the first day of the week, before it was yet light, the holy women came to the sepulchre bringing sweet spices to anoint the body of Jesus. They knew they could not move the great stone and worried about how it would be removed. When they arrived they found the heavy, great stone rolled away from the door and entrance, leaving the tomb open. The entrance stone had been removed and the tomb left open for them to see inside.
The stone had been rolled back by an angel from heaven, a mighty angel who moved the great stone with ease. The discovery was accompanied by trembling of the earth and earthquake, with light and heavenly glory shining around the tomb. The Roman guard was gone when the women arrived. The tomb was empty and the body of Jesus was gone and not there.
At first their hearts sank and they feared their enemies had taken the body. Two angels in white apparel with bright shining faces assured them that Jesus had risen, showed them the place where He lay, and told them to go tell His disciples He would go before them into Galilee. The women also reported angels affirming He had risen and that they had seen Him alive in the garden. The frightened, astonished women carried the report to the mourning disciples, whose faith in the resurrection had grown weak and whose hopes had died with Christ. So they doubted the women's testimony and could not believe He had risen. Yet they ran to the sepulchre and found only His linen clothes and returned home marveling, and the news of the removed body with the report of angels and of meeting Jesus became part of what the disciples later discussed.
Jesus had risen and walked forth from the sepulchre as a mighty conqueror of death and the grave, His life coming from heaven, proclaiming I am the resurrection and the life. The empty tomb with the stone rolled away is evidence that establishes the truth of the resurrection and refutes the priests' false report. His coming forth proves He is a living Saviour with the same power still.
