Luke 5:38

But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.

Christ's living teaching can only be kept in hearts made new to receive it, and cannot be joined to the old system of human traditions without loss to both. The new wine is His truth and kingdom and the life shaped by it, given through the Holy Spirit as grace and light, not a new doctrine but a fresh revealing of truth taught from the beginning. The old bottles are those fixed in outward religious rules and interpretations, self-righteous and unwilling to learn, who cling to forms after spiritual life has died and leave no room for further light. The new bottles are converted and humble hearts, emptied of self and willing to be regenerated, whom He makes fit and then fills, to be preserved together with the truth they receive. Becoming such a vessel calls for surrender of the will, confession, self-denial and wholehearted obedience in meekness and holiness, so that those who gladly receive the light become His agents to share it and reveal His restoring power to needy souls.

Wine and Bottles Explained

Luke 5 records works done for the spiritual and physical needs of those who sought help, revealing the great Medical Missionary and Restorer whose power restores body and soul. The saying about new wine in new bottles belongs to that record and carries precious lessons from that ministry of healing for all engaged in gospel ministry.

The new wine is Christ's teaching and the life shaped by it, His kingdom and its truth, the gospel of truth and life given through the Holy Spirit, the wine of light and the power of God's grace. It is not a new doctrine but a fresh revelation of truth taught from the beginning. It appeared new because false teaching and attachment to old traditions had obscured truth's original meaning and beauty. Jewish expectations also left no place for Him, so He had to prepare people able to receive it.

The old bottles are people fixed in old religious theories, customs, human rules and interpretations, like dried-up skins unwilling to receive challenging lessons. They are marked by self-righteousness, self-complacency and stubbornness, leaving no room for new enlightenment, grace and light. Their many outward rules were unrelated to true godliness, confused people, and obscured the weightier matters of truth and love for God. They clung to religious forms after spiritual life had died.

The new bottles are people with converted, humble hearts willing to learn and be regenerated with new hearts, whom He makes fit to receive His truth and then fills with the new wine. Such receptive hearts were found in the Samaritan woman, in Matthew the publican, and in the fishermen. The fishermen's limited understanding still kept them from fully grasping the spiritual nature of His teaching.

The new principles cannot be joined to the old system, and old traditions must be relinquished to make room in mind and heart for Christ's teaching. When received by people made new to live by them, both the new wine and the new bottles are preserved without loss.

Becoming New Vessels

To receive the new wine a person must himself become new, for the gospel of truth and life given through the Holy Spirit can only be held by hearts made new. The old self-complacent and self-righteous spirit cannot contain God's new enlightenment and grace, and stubbornness and refusal to confess wrongs leave no room for the wine of light and the power of His grace. God makes men new vessels as they surrender their own will, become empty of self, and welcome the work of the Holy Spirit, and then they can receive the fullness of God. Those fixed in unchangeable ideas and human traditions, clinging to religious forms after spiritual life has died, have no room for the gospel, while those willing to be regenerated with new hearts receive it without loss.

Receiving it calls for a wholly renewed character, since Christ's teaching and the life shaped by it cannot be joined to the old religious theories, customs and human rules of the Pharisees. It demands self-denial, self-sacrifice and wholehearted obedience, and it is preserved when received by people made new to live by it. It requires learning from Christ His meekness and lowliness of heart, and holiness of heart is what fits people to belong to the heavenly kingdom. The scribes, Pharisees and rulers, filled with self-righteousness, refused conversion and could not receive the kingdom and its truth, while converted, humble hearts willing to learn, like the willing fishermen, became fit vessels, though limited understanding still kept them from fully grasping its spiritual nature.

Those who gladly accept the light God sends become His agents for sharing truth, and when His people become new vessels through grace He fills them with the new wine. They testify to His restoring power and find their place doing everywhere the work He did on earth to reveal the principles of righteousness to needy souls, with greater faith in the Word of God and with precious lessons drawn from His ministry of healing for all engaged in gospel ministry. His teaching is not a new doctrine but a fresh revelation of truth taught from the beginning, which appeared new because false teaching and attachment to old traditions had obscured its original meaning and beauty, so the old traditions had to be relinquished to make room in mind and heart. As the Jews' expectations left no place for Him so that He had to prepare people able to receive the new wine of the kingdom, so God still works contrary to people's expectations to prepare new vessels for His truth. The truth will triumph, but some will fall and lose the crown because they have not run the race.

New bottles for the new wine are those who believe God has spoken to them through the testimonies of His Spirit, with no quibbling or trifling over them, and who try to practice their teachings. God prepares such new bottles when men and women hunger after knowledge for the purpose of blessing their fellow men. He blesses them with an expansion and development of the higher faculties so that they become deep thinkers. This makes possible fifty times as much in self-education as is now accomplished, and enables them through diligent effort to bring hidden truth to light.
