Jesus Teaching the Crowd on the HillsideBible World
6:18Luke 6:18
And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed.
After spending all night in prayer on the mountain and at dawn setting apart the twelve apostles, Jesus came down with His disciples in the early morning to a healing work at the seaside. A great multitude had already assembled, not only from the Galilean towns but from Judea and Jerusalem, from Perea and the half-heathen Decapolis, from Idumea to the south of Judea, and from Tyre and Sidon on the Mediterranean seacoast, because they had heard what great things He did. They came to hear Him and to be healed of diseases, illnesses, afflictions, and those troubled with unclean spirits were healed with the rest, for power went out from Him and healed them all, as He healed the sick and comforted the sorrowing. The narrow beach did not afford even standing room for all within reach of His voice, so after coming down with His disciples to the plain He led the way to a level space on the mountainside and sat on the grass with the disciples and the multitude.
There He spoke what is called the Sermon on the Mount, given especially to the disciples in the hearing of the multitude. The healing shows His work to reach multitudes in ignorance and error rather than gathering His disciples alone, bringing lessons of truth where they could reach darkened understanding as the Truth Himself with hands ever outstretched to bless, seeking in warning, entreaty and encouragement to uplift all who would come to Him. His power to heal came from communion with God to strengthen His humanity to be a blessing, giving Him energy, perseverance and steadfastness and showing His disciples where His strength lay.
Without daily communion with God no human being can gain power for service, and everyone has the privilege of entrusting trials, temptations, sorrows and disappointments to the loving heavenly Father as confidant and so not fall prey to the enemy.
