Jesus Teaches the Crowd on the Mountainby CBPepper
6:19Luke 6:19
And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.
Luke 6:19 describes an early-morning gathering on the seashore after the ordination of the apostles. The multitude seeking to touch Jesus included the usual crowds from the Galilean towns together with people from Judea and Jerusalem, from Perea, from Decapolis, from Idumea south of Judea, and from Tyre and Sidon on the Mediterranean shore, who came because they had heard what great things He did. People from many regions came in this way to hear and to be healed. The gathering before Him included men, women, children, and the disciples.
They came for a double purpose, both to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases. All of the whole multitude who sought to touch Him were healed, for healing power went out from Him to them. That healing power flowed from Christ and made the afflicted whole. That universal healing included healing the sick, cleansing the leper, and casting out demons.
He carried healing for physical and spiritual disease to share with those suffering under the enemy's power, and He healed willingly and compassionately. His life entering those who came to Him convicted many of sin, so they were healed of spiritual disease as well as physical illness. This healing work is His mission to lift men up, to uplift and ennoble humanity by precept and example and to restore the lost image of God in the soul, for which He left the royal courts of heaven, laid aside His glory, and clothed His divinity with humanity to come into close connection with humanity.
His work of lifting, healing, and restoring stands in direct contrast to the liquor traffic, which takes away righteousness, degrades the soul, and makes men slaves of Satan. Though the Sermon on the Mount was given especially to the disciples, it was spoken in the hearing of this same multitude. They followed Him from the narrow beach that could not hold them within reach of His voice to a level space on the mountainside where He sat on the grass to teach.
