Luke 6:34
And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
Lending only to those from whom repayment is expected earns no thanks, because even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive as much again. Love and kindness must not be limited to those who are close, congenial, or likely to return them, but must go beyond return love and return good to loving enemies, doing good, and lending while hoping for nothing again. Those who love and lend in this way will have great reward and will be the children of the Highest, because He is kind to the unthankful and to the evil. They are to be merciful as their Father in heaven is merciful.
Love shown only to a few favorites, while others who need affection are met with coldness, is not sanctified. The standard set by Christ's example is an unlimited circle of love. Living by this principle keeps a person from speaking evil, backbiting, falsely accusing, thinking evil, misconstruing words, and sowing suspicion. It leads instead to wisely and mercifully doing good, uplifting fellow men, restoring their God-given nobility, and speaking pleasant, agreeable words of encouragement.
