Luke 8:3
And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance. And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.
Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, with many other godly women, were devoted followers who were with Jesus and assisted Him and His disciples during the years of His ministry on earth. They ministered unto Him of their substance, using their own means and resources to provide for Jesus and His disciples, and their charity is the example of how Jesus and His disciples were supported. They united with Him in His work, helping Him present the truth and carry forward the gospel alongside Christ and the apostles.
Their labor was conducted on so high and blameless a plane as to be above suspicion and above the shadow of suspicion, with nothing irregular and nothing out of the regular order in their conduct and no occasion for accusation. This was necessary because opposition would have closed the work at once if anything irregular had been found. The minds of all were directed to the Scriptures rather than to individuals, and the truth was proclaimed intelligently and so plainly that all could understand. Their example supports women's active participation in gospel work, with men and women working together harmoniously in Christ's name in that same work, including wives laboring alongside their husbands, and shows that such work by women deserves support and remuneration.
Believers following their example are not to shut themselves up to their own families or spend so much time on household cares that the house of souls is neglected, but to dedicate themselves unreservedly to God, keep their hearts in the love of Christ, bear fruit and do Him honor, carry a message to unbelievers, and seek souls in cities and places that have never been worked.
