Jairus' Daughter Rises as Jesus Stands byby CBPepper
8:56Luke 8:56
And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.
Luke 8:56 describes what followed when Jairus's daughter was restored to life and health. She was still weak from long illness but free from disease, and she arose and walked across the room. Her parents were astonished and full of joy, weeping for joy at seeing her alive.
Jesus directed that she be given food, reminding her parents that she needed something to eat. That direction shows care for an ordinary practical need even after a great miracle. He charged her parents and the whole household to tell no one what had been done and to keep the miracle silent.
The command for secrecy did not hold, and the news spread far and near that he had raised the dead to life. Concealment was impossible because a large number of mourners had been present when the child died and then beheld her alive and well, so they could not be prevented from reporting it. The parents' joy and the girl's own recovery also made it impossible to keep the news from spreading despite the command.
