Jesus Asking the Disciples Who He IsBible World

Luke 9:19

They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.

The answers given about Jesus were that He was John the Baptist, that He was Elijah, and that one of the old prophets had risen again. Those answers treated Him as a prophet-like figure while stopping short of recognizing Him as the Messiah. Even those who called Him the Son of David after witnessing His miracles, and those fed at Bethsaida who wanted to make Him king, had not thereby come to faith in Him as the Messiah. This listing of opinions belongs to the time when Jesus was preparing His disciples for His coming suffering and death, giving the opinions without further explanation of them. It stands where preaching and healing are joined and not separated, and where each person is called to take up his own cross himself and follow Christ.
