Luke 9:21

And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;

After Peter confessed Jesus as the Christ, Jesus strictly charged the disciples to tell no one about it. The charge stands in teaching that healing and preaching are not separated but connected, and that each individual himself must take up his cross and follow Christ. It was spoken when the time was nearly come for Christ to be taken from the people, reflecting light upon them so they would remember all He had said to them.

The command to silence was given because the scribes and Pharisees were firmly opposed to Him. The people and even the disciples held a false idea of the Messiah, so announcing Him publicly would not have given a true understanding of His character and work. Instead, Jesus revealed Himself to the disciples day by day as the Saviour so they could gain a true understanding of Him as the Messiah.
