Luke 9:27

But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

The saying was spoken while Jesus was in the world shining light upon the people, when the time was nearly come for Him to be taken from them, and He wanted them to remember all He had said to prepare them for a coming time of trials and persecutions everywhere. It promises that some standing there would not taste death before they saw the kingdom of God come with power, that is, the Son of Man coming in His kingdom. That coming is Christ returning in glory with the glory of God and the hosts of heaven, not with the splendor of an earthly throne, and the disciples struggled to understand how this fit with His foretold poverty, suffering and death.

The promise was fulfilled a short time later at the transfiguration, where the disciples were given a miniature view of the kingdom come in power and of Christ's excellent majesty. There the fashion of Jesus' face was changed and shone like the sun and His clothing became white and glistening with heavenly glory. Under the overshadowing cloud the disciples looked on with fear and astonishment while the voice of God in terrible majesty proclaimed Him the beloved Son to be heard.

Moses was present there as the representative of those who will be raised from the dead at the second appearing of Jesus. Elijah, who was translated without seeing death, was present as the representative of those who will be living at Christ's second coming and, without seeing death, will be changed from mortal to immortal and translated to heaven. The words are to be studied to get their meaning so that hearts come into full harmony with Christ and become intelligent about His work and what He will do for those who follow on to know the Lord, whose going forth opens like the morning in continual increase of light.
