Luke 9:42
And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father. And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
Luke 9:42 belongs to the account of a father bringing his son, who was tormented by an unclean spirit, to the disciples for deliverance. The disciples had been given authority over unclean spirits, but on this occasion they could not cast the spirit out, and their failure brought humiliation and scorn upon them and upon Jesus. The meeting with the demon-possessed child took place after Jesus descended from the mount of transfiguration.
As the boy was coming to Jesus, the demon threw him down and convulsed him, and he was suffering in agony under Satan's power. Jesus stooped to lift the boy, rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed him by restoring his mind and body. He freed him forever from the demon and delivered him again to his father.
The act of lifting the boy from Satan's power is an object lesson of the Divine One stooping from the Father's glory to save the lost. The deliverance shows that people enslaved by Satan can be set free through faith and prayer, which is the disciples' mission to bring freedom.
