Luke 9:43

And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,

All were amazed at the mighty power of God as they watched all that Jesus did. The amazement was at the mighty power displayed when Jesus healed the child. The multitude marveled at God's power while father and son praised their Deliverer.

The amazement followed Jesus' return from the mountain where He had revealed His glory to work among the people. The authority He then showed in deliverance displayed the divine power associated with that transfiguration glory. The scene He entered was one of perplexity and humiliation, for the disciples had failed to cast out the spirit and the scribes were using that failure to discredit them and Jesus. When Jesus arrived the people turned from scorn to welcome and reverence, awed by the heavenly light resting upon Him and His companions.

The power that amazed them was shown when Jesus freed a suffering boy enslaved by Satan from an unclean and evil spirit, a demon described as deaf and dumb. After the father's doubting plea and his cry for help with unbelief, Jesus commanded the spirit to come out and enter no more. He lifted the boy by the hand and presented him to his father in health and perfect soundness of mind and body. While the multitude marveled, the defeated scribes turned sullenly away. That healing is an object lesson of redemption in which the Divine One descends from glory to save the lost. It represents the disciples' mission to bring faith and prayer to people waiting to be freed from Satan's power.

The verse belongs to the teaching of Luke 9:26-62 whose meaning must be studied to prepare for trials and persecutions everywhere. This requires hearts in full harmony with Christ and intelligent knowledge of His work and of what He will do for those who follow on to know the Lord. Following on to know the Lord gives continual increase of light, for His going forth is prepared as the morning. The verse shows Christ in the world reflecting light upon the people when the time was nearly come for Him to be taken from them, and He desired that they remember all that He had said to them.
