Luke 9:46

Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.

Luke 9:46 belongs to Luke 9:26-62, which must be studied together to grasp its meaning. It records a dispute that arose among the disciples over which of them should be considered greatest in the kingdom. The rivalry broke out even while Jesus was telling them that He would be betrayed and killed and raised again. They did not understand His words about His coming death and resurrection.

They tried to hide their dispute over greatness from Him. He spoke these things while still reflecting light in the world, when the time was nearly come for Him to be taken from the disciples, and He wanted them to remember all He had said. He wanted them to remember in preparation for coming trials and persecutions everywhere. Studying this passage brings hearts into full harmony with Christ and intelligent understanding of His work and what He will do for those who follow on to know the Lord, whose going forth is prepared as the morning with continual increase of light.
