Twelve Disciples Walking Out Two by TwoBible World

Luke 9:6

And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.

Before they departed, the disciples had close daily training as members of his household, traveling on foot through Galilee, sharing his toils and hardships, listening to his discourses, and walking and talking with him. In that companionship they learned how to work for the elevation of humanity by arranging the multitudes, bringing the afflicted to him, promoting comfort, watching for interested hearers, explaining the Scriptures, and teaching what they had learned. They were then sent forth as his representatives to gain experience laboring alone while he was still personally with them to point out their errors and to counsel and correct them, because they still needed much instruction, patience and tenderness.

The verse records the twelve carrying out his commission and plan by departing to travel through the towns, preaching the gospel and the kingdom of God and healing the sick everywhere. The first disciples went out to do this work two by two. Their preaching, teaching and healing were blended together as one connected work and not separated, combining the message with healing through the power of the Spirit. This mission to preach and heal took place amid efforts by Satan to darken and confuse people, but his authority and the heavenly agencies with the disciples were superior to the satanic powers. Heaven blessed the work, and their fulfillment of his commission made their message powerful for salvation and brought many to know the Messiah.

The example of his life trained them more than doctrine, so that once separated from him every look and tone and word came back to them, and in conflict with enemies of the gospel they repeated his words and rejoiced greatly at their effect on the people. His sending of the twelve is an example of placing workers in responsibility, with him following after them where they were sent. Their work was like that of the seventy, who were likewise sent under his direction to work as he did, in the same manner and with the same first directions he had given the twelve. Their message announced that the kingdom of God had come near, invited people to enter the kingdom by receiving its message and Messenger, and called them to recognize the day of their visitation and accept the blessings within their reach. This combined work of preaching the gospel and healing the sick is the pattern for mission work and the very work given to his people to do now in fulfillment of Scripture, so every believer should understand the Scriptures in order to do it.
