Malachi 1:4

Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places; thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the LORD hath indignation for ever.

Edom speaks in defiance of its impoverishment, resolving to return and rebuild its desolate and ruined places, but the Lord of hosts answers that though they build He will throw down their work. That frustrated rebuilding leaves them marked by a lasting name as a wicked land and as a people resting under God's enduring indignation.

The prophecy stands among Old Testament prophecies given as warnings for the last days, whose described scenes will be witnessed in the last days and whose threatened judgments will be fulfilled as certainly as past judgments have been fulfilled. Its fulfillment is as sure as the destruction already seen in the overthrow of San Francisco, setting that calamity as the pledge of the certainty of the coming judgments.
