Woman Counting Tithes and Offerings at a TableBible World

Malachi 3:10

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there may be food and means in God's house for His work and the preaching of the gospel. All means the full exact tenth of all increase, not a small portion or part, brought without calculating the outcome or substituting other gifts of one's own choosing. The storehouse is God's treasury for sustaining gospel laborers and ministry, and the tithe is sacred to that one purpose and must not be diverted to other uses even for good causes. Withholding tithes and offerings is robbing God and brings a curse with loss of blessing, while faithful bringing brings blessing and approval. Prove Him by obeying, and He binds Himself to open the windows of heaven and pour out blessing so abundant there is not room to receive it, a promise conditional on willing obedience so that failure forfeits the blessing.

Command and Promise

The command is to bring all the tithes into the storehouse or treasury so that there may be meat, food, provision and means in God's house for His work and the preaching of the gospel, keeping the treasury from becoming empty and the work from being retarded. When God's people bring all the tithe for the needs of His work, the means entrusted to them advance the gospel and He pours out blessing on those who obey. Bringing the full tithe is a plain duty and a test of obedience, stated so plainly as to leave no excuse for neglect, and it is the condition of prosperity. Faithfulness brings abundant blessing both temporal and spiritual, while neglecting the duty withholds what belongs to God and leaves people without His blessing and protection. The surrounding promise explains that He will restrain the devourer and destroyer, protect the produce of the land and the crops and vines from loss, make the land delightful and fruitful, so that other nations call His people blessed.

All means the full exact tenth, whether means are little or large, not merely a small portion, half, quarter, or two-thirds. It is to be brought without calculating how one is coming out and without substituting charity, gifts, or offerings given when and how human agents choose for God's exact plan. The tenth belongs to God and is not the steward's own, and following His plan is the agreement He has made. The tithes are to provide for God's work so that funds are available when new fields open for messengers to carry truth to those who do not know God and Jesus Christ, who may in turn become missionaries to others. The meat in His house is the revenue thus brought in to supply the needs of His cause, as He has made men His stewards and asks a return from what He has blessed them with in order to bless others. Ministers have solemn duty to teach and warn every church member on this point with personal labor and instruction, because failure to render to the Lord His own is robbery toward God that brings His curse.

The verse invites God's people to prove or test Him by obeying, with the promise that He will open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing so abundant there is not room enough to receive it. God binds Himself to do His part if they do theirs, and He pledges to work in their behalf, to entrust them with larger responsibilities and facilities for obtaining more means, and to act His part by bestowing His great gifts. The promise is conditional on willingly and gladly meeting the requirements, so failure and covetously keeping back what belongs in His treasury forfeits the blessing and brings a curse. Those who withhold their proportion, walk in their own wisdom, and rob God keep themselves under condemnation as unfaithful stewards, deprive themselves and God's treasury of blessing, have blessing withdrawn in this life, forfeit facilities for more means, prove unfit for larger trust, and will meet their robbery when the books are opened and every man is judged according to deeds done in the body. God's failure to restrain destruction follows from people refusing to be faithful.

The storehouse is God's treasury, and the meat in His house is the revenue and resources needed for the different branches of the work, for warnings and entreaties to be sent to the world, and for workers. Tithes and offerings are instituted to flow into the treasury of the Lord's house to provide means to sustain and carry forward the work of the gospel in the earth, so that suffering and want need not exist. The call to send means so there may be meat in God's house applies to giving up possessions and directing proceeds, in many small contributions and by turning from selfish wants and unnecessary idols, to support ministers and missionaries who bring truth to people seeking it. In one application it calls for princely offerings for the advancement of God's work in the locality to meet ever-increasing opportunities for usefulness connected with the school.

The earth is the Lord's storehouse from which He supplies all necessities of fruits and grains and vegetables and sunshine and rain to good and evil alike, from which the whole human family constantly draws. He has made men His almoners and distributors to draw from His storehouse and then make a faithful return to Him in tithes and offerings so that there may be meat in His house and His house has provision. On that faithful return He specifies His own part and invites them to prove Him by obedience, opening the windows of heaven and pouring out a blessing beyond capacity to receive, while selfish withholding of that return robs God. The chapter containing the verse is a clear and forceful statement of God's requirements.

Tithe as God's Portion

The tithe is one-tenth of a person's increase, income, possessions, and all that God places in human hands, including the produce of field, orchard and soil, the least that is due, to be given systematically in proportion as God has prospered each one, including gifts from the poor, besides gifts and offerings. It is to be an exact full tenth whether means are little or large, without calculating how one is coming out and without substituting charity or offerings of one's own choosing. When it is faithfully returned God promises abundant blessing and uses the entrusted means to carry forward His work and supply His house, while withholding is robbery that places people outside the path of blessing.

The tithe is the Lord's own sacred reserved portion like the seventh day, while the remaining nine-tenths are entrusted to people in trust for their use. People are only stewards who do not own the money passing through their hands but disburse it as co-laborers with Christ, accountable to Him in how they use it and in the judgment, with property to be used in His service and its use bearing on reward. Faithful tithe-paying supplies the treasury to sustain His house and encourages laborers to enter ministerial work, while using the tithe for other lines through selfish hands robs the treasury and hinders the ministry. It belongs in His treasury for the service He has appointed, sacred and not to be kept, used personally, or diverted by human judgment.

Returning the tithe is not a matter of gratitude or generosity but of honesty, because it already belongs to the Lord and is no longer one's own. The tithing plan was established by God and devised by Jesus Christ Himself, and people are not free to replace His arrangement with one of their own. He gave His life for the life of the world, left the royal courts, laid aside honor as Commander of the heavenly hosts, clothed divinity with humanity to uplift the fallen race, and became poor that men through His poverty might be rich. He devised this plan because it is best for men, to cultivate gratitude and liberality, free them from selfishness contrary to His character, guard them against worldliness, covetousness and avarice, and register them by His grace as co-laborers with Christ in redemption.

The requirement applies in the patriarchal age, the Jewish economy and the apostolic age and in every age. It follows Abraham who paid tithe of all he possessed and received, and it requires everyone including those connected with God's institutions who owe intellect and all capabilities to bring tithes and offerings freely, willingly and gladly. It is not imposed by human compulsion but is to be obeyed willingly, as willingly as sacred time and the Sabbath are kept. Disregarding the claim brings a curse, while obedience carries the decided promise to be proved, that He will open heaven and pour out blessing beyond room to receive, with proving Him meaning returning rather than withholding to save means and joining faithful prayer with freewill giving.

God's claim comes first before every other claim and before personal wants are met. It comes first even when income is small and giving requires sacrifice, inconvenience and hardship. Income and prosperity come from God, rendering His portion leaves the remainder sanctified and blessed for personal use, while withholding sooner or later brings a curse upon the whole. People should learn His requirements by searching the Old Testament Scriptures rather than withhold.

God blesses the work of hands so people may return His portion, giving sunshine and rain, causing vegetation to flourish, giving health and ability to acquire means, with every blessing from His bountiful hand. He is ever bestowing mercies, fruitful seasons, health, and power to get wealth with quick thought and ability to plan and execute and open ways to gain means, and He claims a portion of the money so gained as His own in tithes, gifts and offerings. Dependence on Him for life and health and for blessing on crops and fields, cattle, herds and vineyards calls for faithful duty, and the wonderful presentation of promised blessings leaves no reason to rob Him. Withholding means He will withhold blessing and send a curse upon the unfaithful.

The verse teaches consecration of specified tithes and offerings as tokens of loyalty and submission to His sovereignty. Bringing the tithe acknowledges dependence on God and returns to the Lord what belongs to Him, a duty so plain it leaves no excuse for neglect. Faithfully returning it shows that all things belong to God, supports those who carry salvation throughout the world, and keeps resources to spread truth near and far. God owns all possessions and promises to bless and increase the substance of those who bring them, giving abundance, while withholding is robbery and obedience is connected with blessing. Property belongs to the Lord for His service not selfish purposes, and its use bears on reward in the judgment. The tenth is to be brought with gifts and offerings for advancing His work, including sending preachers to teach Scripture to those in darkness.

The verse calls for bringing all tithes in this life while entrusted means can still be used in His service, meeting the condition to prove Him for His promised provision. Of possessions entrusted, a tenth is to be returned, with regular sacred reserves set apart for God's work not handled by impulse, an arrangement carrying solemn eternal consequences. One tenth belongs to Him and must be faithfully set apart as sacred for sacred purposes, showing trust, obedience and recognition that everything is His. Those who obey by giving Him what is His receive the promised blessing to advance His work and support His ministers. After meeting His claim first, economy helps provide means, keeping money that belongs to God is robbery, and God blesses those who return His own and put His claims first.

Money, property and all means belong to the Lord and men and women are only stewards. Wealth entrusted belongs to God for His glory and is to be used to advance His cause, with account to be settled with Him, while withholding leaves His treasury short to save souls and spread the gospel. God provides wealth through human agents to sustain the different branches of His work, valuing money for the good it can do in bringing salvation through Christ, distributing His goods thoughtfully according to known ability. The tenth belongs to God as part of putting Christ's cause first, and keeping it back also deprives the giver of heavenly treasure. Those honored with large entrusted means are tested in integrity to acknowledge all as His, faithfully returning tithes and offerings and wisely using His capital to build the Redeemer's kingdom. Earthly riches are held in trust to be returned as required, with faithful tithe of all capital plus gifts and offerings in a constant stream so His work is sustained and not hindered.

God requires His people to freely give back when He requires what He has given, rewarding every heart that does so. Returning the full tithe rather than withholding it or making it as small as possible is not a loss, because He promises blessing and the means sustain His servants and institutions in spreading truth. He reserves tithes and offerings for support and advancement so there may be provision in His house, returning them is duty, withholding is robbery, and giving gives stewards opportunity to follow His generosity. Withholding is answered with affliction in families and decrease in possessions in proportion to disposition to rob Him.

The tithe is reserved for God to support the worldwide spread of the gospel, and the invitation to prove the Lord is a call to obey and trust Him, not to withhold what belongs to Him. Giving offerings as well as tithe expresses faithful stewardship and liberality, and returning the full tithe tests trust through the promise of blessing. God claims a tenth of the increase entrusted along with liberal offerings as part of a divinely appointed plan in which gratitude for blessings is shown by returning a portion, providing means for His cause. Christ is the absent householder who left His vineyard with men as husbandmen and stewards, and the tithe is the rental owed to Him as Owner from all goods in their care. Every member is therefore to keep account and bring all tithes with gifts and offerings into the treasury storehouse, that there may be meat in God's house for carrying on His work, with promise to open heaven and pour out blessing beyond room to receive.

Storehouse and Supported Ministry

The storehouse is God's treasury for sustaining gospel laborers and ministry, and all the tithes are to be brought faithfully into it so there may be meat, food and provision in His house. Faithful tithe-paying keeps an abundant supply in the treasury, provides means for laborers and for opening new fields, and encourages more workers to take up ministerial work, while withholding through selfish hearts and hands or using the tithe to support other lines of work depletes the treasury, keeps men from entering the ministry, and holds up and obstructs the work. Other lines of work and incidental church expenses must be supported by means other than the tithe, by gifts and offerings, and those who obey are invited to prove God with promise of blessing poured out so large there is not room to receive it.

The tithe is appointed for sacred service to sustain ministers, gospel laborers, missionaries and the worldwide spread of truth, to support workers already in the field, send more workers, open new fields, and pay ministers an honest full tithe enough to sustain their families so they are not left as beggars or unsupported in new foreign fields. It must not be kept back in part as one-fourth or one-half, used for personal purposes, diverted by human judgment, or used for other lines of work, and failure to render to the Lord His own is robbery toward God that brings His curse. One tenth faithfully placed in the treasury for sacred purposes, with a constant stream and steady regular giving from each member, supplies means to carry truth to every land, spread publications, send workers and keep resources to spread truth near and far, showing living interest in the success of the truth and the glory of God.

God has made this provision for supporting the ministry to the churches so His blessing may rest upon the church, and refusing it is disobedience that leaves people without His approval and blessing, while faithfulness would keep His treasury from being empty. When all the tithes are brought into the Lord's treasury blessings follow and gifts and offerings for sacred work are multiplied tenfold, keeping the channel between God and people open, supplying the needs of God's work, relieving its financial burdens, enabling missionary work to advance, and providing resources that can support the work in other places. Withholding or postponing what is due is robbery and brings a curse, and the promise of blessing is connected with the good that follows when the people faithfully bring their tithes together with gifts and offerings.

The means thus brought in are to give adequate support to those who devote their time to saving souls, so their just wages are not begrudged, they do not lack the necessities of life, they can live comfortably, have enough to lead in donations to the cause, and every church member is bound by covenant to deny extravagant outlay and practice economy in home life to this end. Faithfulness supplies facilities for carrying the message rapidly into new fields including the needy Southern field, sustains work already established, enters new territory and provides many more laborers, while withholding means retards the work and brings God's rebuke on those who do not come up to His help. The faithful return of tithes to the Lord's storehouse sustains ministers and missionaries who teach Scripture and work from house to house, while members also bring liberal offerings and firstfruits to advance the message worldwide to fields where people wait for truth. Withholding for selfish reasons hinders preaching, failure leaves the treasury short and the work in need, while faithful tithes with firstfruits provide ample means for God's work and for helping the poor and suffering.

Bringing the full tithe is needed because failure leaves His work without means, causing workers to hesitate, the work to be narrowed, and efforts to reach cities to be delayed. The tithe is the Lord's special revenue fund for a special purpose, consecrated to God to sustain those chosen to minister in the sacred work not only in sermonizing but in ministering in all that this comprehends. Meat in His house means a treasury well supplied for their encouragement and support, it must never be diverted to other purposes, and special labor is to awaken believers to give a faithful tithe for this use.

The tithe belongs in God's treasury so there will be provision for those who carry His message, specially devoted to their support, and treating it as money to use as one pleases violates God's requirement. God cannot bless or sustain those who misuse what is His, for faithfulness involves blessing and misuse involves curse. It must be kept sacred for the service He has appointed for support of His work, and it is not for a minister or anyone else to retain or redirect according to personal judgment.

The tithe is the Lord's own portion, guarded to be kept sacred for the one purpose of supporting gospel ministers, and must not be diverted to other channels even under temptation or pressure, such as educating students, meeting temporal needs, or providing church conveniences. Other lines needing support require separate provision, the working force that bears the message must not be reduced to fit the tithe, and departing from the Lord's plan lessens His blessing and brings great lack of means. The tithe is to sustain ministers generously both in new fields and elsewhere, with careful regard for greater cost of living and hard conditions in some localities.

The tithe is sacred and is God's tithe, to be brought liberally and honestly and carefully guarded for sustaining the ministry so ministers receive a just wage. It must not be retained, borrowed, or redirected by human judgment even in emergency, and must not be used for ordinary, incidental or meetinghouse expenses, for charity or caring for the needy. Regular donations and congregational offerings, not the tithe which belongs to the conference, should meet local expenses, handlers must act openly in daylight so confidence of the whole people is established, and no sharpness or selfishness is to be exercised toward bringers who are trying to serve God with all power.

Taking what is consecrated for religious purposes for personal advantage or secular business is sacrilege, diverting from God's altar what is dedicated to Him as revenue of the gospel no longer ours. No one in a strait place may take it even intending to repay it later, and it is far better to cut expenses to match income, restrict wants, and live within means than to use the Lord's money for secular purposes. The tithe must be used for the purpose God designated and not diverted to other causes even when good, not used for ordinary house needs or a church's incidental, running or common expenses, not used to pay personal debts, and not retained, used personally, or redirected by ministers or by human judgment. Using it for common expenses misapplies a consecrated fund, dishonors God, loses His blessing and withdraws His Spirit, and debt does not justify withholding since unfaithfulness there will appear in other dealings.

Money entrusted for a special purpose must promptly be put where it belongs and every penny carefully recorded, and must not be diverted to meet an emergency on the assumption it can be replaced later. God does not sanction borrowing the tithe or meddling with it for any other work, including incidental church expenses or filling business gaps, because that lifts a burden members should carry themselves. Members are to meet those extras by gifts and offerings through self-denial, consecration, economy, spending less for display, and plain simple clothing without adornments, with faith and works making them true missionaries to carry the last message and sustain missions where there are no churches or tithes. The tithe is not to be used for incidental or ordinary church expenses or weekly demands, which members should meet themselves through self-denial, economy, gifts and offerings, and diverting tithe for that purpose loses the Lord's blessing.

The tithe is not a poor fund but provides for faithful messengers who open the Word and carry its light to those in darkness. It is sacred and must not be kept for personal use or diverted even for what people consider emergencies or the Lord's work, and withholding it is robbery which ministers must teach against to ensure God's work is supplied. Where tithe is abundant the extra is to be sent to poor places and foreign countries where tithe is limited and qualified men cannot be employed for lack of means, for the vineyard is large. Well-furnished churches such as Oakland, Battle Creek, Healdsburg and San Francisco must support their own weekly incidental expenses and church demands themselves through self-denial, economy, gifts and offerings, with leaders binding about wants and setting example, or God will remove His blessing if tithe fills their gaps.

Means should go from the local church to the General Conference for the universal wants of the cause where the work must be built up, every soul acting part by faithful tithe with gifts and offerings so there is meat in the house and the great heart of the work is preserved. Means are to be kept ready so workers can be helped at once with nothing spent needlessly, go to needy new efforts rather than places already established, and building debts must never be laid on the central treasury so it stands in moral and financial independence. When God sends workers to a field He requires means to be used in that field under His direction, and means needed in distressing necessity must be invested where the need is, for to withhold it is robbery and failure leaves the work years behind.

Funds given in faith are not handlers' personal property and must not be absorbed in one place or diverted to work He has not appointed while mission fields lack temporal and spiritual bread. A church paying tithe brings money into the conference to fund ministers sent elsewhere for the wider work, while unfaithfulness in handling harms the work and discernment and leaves hungry people without support. Money dedicated to God must be handled faithfully for its appointed work, diverting it is robbery of His treasury for which He will judge those responsible, whereas faithful stewardship would have advanced the work.

Meat in His house is means placed at the disposal of those He sends to relieve suffering bodies and needy souls, not wasted to gratify pride, appetite, pleasure and appearances but returned with self-denial. Bringing tithes, gifts and offerings supplies the treasury to sustain and prepare ministers, pay wages, support missionaries in different fields, carry light near and far into new territory, and expand the work, so faithful giving leaves no dearth of means. When believers bring a faithful tithe with peace offerings, thank offerings and willing offerings given for His great love, there will be no lack, giving follows personal consecration in giving themselves first, and systematic faithful giving benefits the giver spiritually and helps the work grow.

Faithful giving would fill God's treasury to provide for gospel needs so there would be no need to raise funds through fairs, lotteries or pleasure parties. Bringing all the tithes keeps a surplus to amply advance the work in its various branches, with those blessed letting blessing continually flow out in mercy so as they receive they give. One bringing tithes to sustain the ministry is trying to serve God with all power and must not be met with sharpness, the tithe being sacred and God's to be so liberal as largely to sustain the work with a sustained treasury, and handlers and those in responsible places must manage openly in daylight that confidence is established. Those who bring the tithe are God's servants, the tithe must not be withheld even when objecting to conferences paying unconverted injuring ministers, though it is sin to take it to pay men who have not made full proof of ministry.

Robbery Curse and Restitution

Withholding tithes and offerings is robbing God, and it brings a curse upon the whole nation and upon the unfaithful individual, with loss of blessing and protection, while faithful bringing brings blessing and approval. The command is to bring all the tithe into the storehouse so there may be provision for His house and His work, with the invitation to prove Him by obedience and the promise to open heaven and pour out blessing beyond capacity to receive. The surrounding promise is that He will restrain the devourer and destroyer, protect the fruits of the ground and the crops and vines from dropping fruit early, make the land delightful, and cause other nations to call His people blessed, while refusal leaves people without His blessing and protection and brings destruction He otherwise would restrain. Faithfulness in giving is linked to prosperity in temporal and spiritual things and to advancing the gospel with means entrusted to people, while withholding is disobedience and unfaithful stewardship betraying lack of gratitude.

The verse is God's definite answer to His people's claim not to know wherein they robbed Him, identifying withholding tithes and offerings as the robbery that brings the curse on the whole nation. Withholding the tithe robs God, retards His work, brings His curse and the withholding of His blessing, leaves guilt for souls allowed to die in ignorance of truth, and makes it impossible to offer prayer in faith, while returning in full obedience gives the right to prove His promise of abundant blessing for sustaining His work among the poor, needy and broken-hearted. Withholding what belongs to God is the presumptuous sin of robbery and wasting His goods upon self or others, no speculative theory but a truth of deepest interest and weightiest importance to be brought distinctly before His people and carried as warning to all parts of the world so none has excuse in the day of judgment. Withholding tithes and offerings is breach of the agreement between God and humanity, where faithful stewardship brings blessing and selfish refusal brings the declared curse, is treated as robbery, and can lead others to disregard His commandments.

Tithes and offerings are God's own, and to withhold them is to rob God and bring a curse upon the soul. The word is plain and direct and must not be evaded, bent to personal ideas and prejudices, or blunted to excuse disobedience, but personal ideas and practices must be brought to it to be corrected and cut away, especially in the last days when corrupt influences lead to resistance of its requirements and confusion about eternal interests, and no one must countenance robbery of God or lead others into it. Those honored with large entrusted means are tested in integrity to acknowledge all as God's, faithfully returning His claimed portion and wisely using His capital to build the Redeemer's kingdom. Withholding what belongs to God is sinful and brings a curse, while faithful giving is duty to be performed freely and gladly, and the neglected tithe must be paid to be right with God and avoid the curse. Dissatisfaction with how others manage funds does not justify withholding, for each must do duty while mismanagement is corrected by those responsible.

Withholding tithes and offerings to save wealth for children robs God and deprives children of the chance to earn and give toward benevolent work and the advancement of His cause. Those who rob God cannot come expecting blessing and exaltation like others but will murmur and complain, shutting out His blessing by holding back. Those who become selfish, misplace entrusted means, and fail to sustain His work must render account for souls lost through neglect to cooperate with divine agencies and for retarding its advancement, for obedience brings promised blessing and peace but disobedience is cursed with a curse. Meat in His house means means for sending warnings and entreaties to the world so suffering and want need not exist, provided through tithes and offerings flowing into the treasury to sustain the gospel.

Those who use God's gifts for themselves while doing little to advance His cause hinder His work and bring His curse, though their means remain entrusted for His use. Spending those means on selfish useless purposes robs God and diverts support from His cause, while giving them for its advancement is proper use of what He entrusted. Bringing tithes into the storehouse provides means for His work including missionary work, and withholding contributes to financial hardship and brings a curse as robbery. Withholding a proper share brings a curse, while giving a free unblemished offering of the best of flocks and fields brings blessing on family and possessions. Withheld offerings were recorded in heaven, with consequences in poor harvests, loss among flocks and affliction in families, and in ancient Israel withholding brought curses on harvests and flocks while an offering had to be without blemish for blessing to rest on families and possessions.

Withholding what belongs to God is answered with affliction in families and decrease in possessions in proportion to the disposition to rob Him, and He rewards every heart that freely gives back when He requires what He gave. Enough must therefore be willingly and liberally given to finish a house built for God so it is comfortable, neat and convenient for His holy presence and never left in debt, for debt dishonors Him. Withholding dishonors God and comes from ceasing to deny self, as fruit of covetousness, decline of spirituality, doubt and unbelief, and strange principles spreading like evil leaven when grasping after higher and still higher wages is witnessed. Selfishness is the great sin of the world and has become the prevailing sin of the church, greatly dishonoring God when His people fail to impart means for advancing His work with power, laying responsibility everywhere to pay a faithful tithe, keep faithful account with the Creator, be just with Him who has foreknowledge, and search the heart to see how one stands before God rather than allow lax principles to lead to robbery.

Robbing God includes withholding from needy fellow workers the entrusted means and failing to use available means to support workers carrying truth to sinners, for holding back over cost leaves sinners without help and calls for using means to encourage workers. Where one part of the work has abundance and another struggles in poverty for lack of facilities, keeping all profits and advantages under one's own management instead of sharing to establish and equip the needy field is covetousness, selfishness and idolatry that robs God Himself. Withholding tithes and offerings hinders His work, while following His plan with self-sacrifice brings abundant blessings upon the church. Rendering to the Lord His own relieves His work of poverty, but hoarded wealth becomes a curse, and God cannot preserve and bless possessions when owners feel no obligation to help proclaim truth in new fields. Substance generously divided with brethren laboring with meager facilities in destitute fields brings rich blessings in return, while selfishly holding means in emergency will soon bring loss of all, and those truly converted with more than sufficient for immediate necessities will freely impart abundance to help the poorer.

Withholding for any reason, even disagreement or dissatisfaction with Conference business or ministers' use of means even if unworthy men receive some, is sin that braves God's curse and tends to poverty of soul and increased financial difficulty. Duty is to pay gladly and freely, stand in place, do what can be done to correct evil management while leaving erring managers accountable, and never withhold what belongs to God, for tithes and offerings are His own property to be brought into the treasury for His appointed work. Withholding is recorded in heaven's books as robbery toward God. Withholding tithe leaves an indebtedness registered in heaven to be met in judgment, and faithfulness is connected with blessing while withholding was associated with loss of the Spirit. The tithe belongs to the Lord and must be paid honestly, with neglected tithes calling for restitution.

Neglect to tithe is recorded in heaven as unfaithful handling of entrusted goods, and merely beginning correctly later does not erase that record, for repentance for unfaithfulness and ingratitude is required. Pledges to God should be fulfilled while means are available, and honesty requires bringing the full tithe, making right unpaid tithes and continuing faithfully with the Lord's help. Withholding must be repented of through restitution, with unpaid tithes returned to the treasury and failure confessed. Withholding part while appearing to follow the rules is like the deceit of Ananias and Sapphira, illustrating covetousness, fraud and hypocrisy toward God who detects hidden sin and will not be mocked, while returning the tithe as required brings abundance to carry forward His work. Giving only a small portion in a will does not make up for withholding during life, for God's means should be used faithfully in life for missions and spread of truth with offerings and support.

Those who kept back the tithe should reckon what they owe and make restitution by bringing all back tithe and promises to pay into the treasury so it is not left empty, including figuring unpaid tithe even over twenty years. The deficiency is to be made up without delay with repentance shown by works, bringing forgiveness, peace, renewed fellowship and blessing, as seen in confession of robbery with return of back tithes and additional gifts. Tithes and offerings brought into the treasury belong to God, and withholding the full tithe, keeping back what He declared should be returned, or keeping money that belongs to Him is robbing and trifling with Him. Those who neglected must return what they owe with accurate reckoning and restitution, keep faithful account with the Creator, practice the truth, end contention and strife, and use entrusted abilities and resources for the poor and for advancing His work, for unfaithfulness in handling funds harms the work and damages discernment.

The verse is applied to confessing withheld tithes and restoring what was not given to God. Guilt for withholding His own in tithes and offerings, for which blessing is withdrawn from many, must be confessed to God and to the church and put away by obedience to bring all tithes so there is provision in His house, as necessary preparation before asking for prayer and restoration of health. The verse calls people to confess and stop withholding and to prove the Lord by faithfully returning the tithe with gifts and offerings for support of the gospel throughout the world. Those who withhold are called to bring the tithe and test the promise, while refusing and using it selfishly robs God, hinders His work and shows disloyalty. Complaints of no profit or poor crops while seeing the wicked prosper ignore their own unfaithfulness, for adversity follows as God permits the spoiler to destroy fruits and calamities to come.

Tithes and offerings acknowledge obligations for spiritual and temporal blessings, and withholding them is robbery and misuse of entrusted goods which God reproves. Faithfully returning them is duty plainly stated in Scripture, for they are consecrated gifts returned to the Giver, and those who withhold turn from His word and forfeit blessing while obedience expresses stewardship, liberality, trust and obedience. Giving offerings as well as the tithe expresses faithful stewardship, with the tithe reserved to support the spread of the gospel worldwide and the invitation to prove the Lord a call to obey and trust rather than withhold. Withholding brings a curse while faithful bringing honors His claim and supports His work, with prosperity proportioned to obedience and blessings limited as offerings are limited. Giving the full tithe so His house is supplied is the condition God sets for accepting professed Christians and answering prayers, while holding back for gain from worldliness and selfishness shuts people from Him, leaves His curse hanging over them, and makes casual prayers vain without genuine conversion, though meeting the condition lets them test His promise of blessing beyond capacity to receive.

The value of an offering is measured not by amount but by motive and willing loving heart, with small sincere gifts accepted, yet not even small things are to be robbed from God, and willing faithful offerings of time, service, affection and property are rewarded. Withholding damages spiritual life, while paying an honest tithe faithfully is an act of returning to God and brings happiness.

Proving God and Blessing

God is still testing whether people will be faithful servants, calling them to consider His goodness and prove loyalty and gratitude by bringing the full tithe for His house, and keeping back the portion He has reserved proves unfaithful stewardship and causes loss not only of what was withheld from Him but also of what was entrusted as one's own. The verse tests whether people prize eternal riches above earthly things and will surrender self and the world to Christ. It lays down a principle to work by from henceforth, requiring the naturally selfish and covetous to act in the opposite direction and give where they have withheld, not one quarter or two thirds but all, and this giving is the only way to gain the victory and finally inherit eternal life.

The tithing system tests people week by week and month by month, develops character, and reveals the true state of the heart and whether people are committed to God's work. Giving is to be free, with each person responsible for deciding whether to give much or little, and ministers are not to pressure or condemn anyone over the amount. Bringing all tithes and offerings into the storehouse is the result of a heart transformed by divine love and freed from selfishness and covetousness, and faithfulness to the truth through to the end leads toward entrance into the heavenly kingdom. Returning the tithe is a safeguard against selfishness and self-indulgence, and parents are to train children to deny themselves, return what is His, and use means according to His directions even when gifts are small. Faithful stewardship is to be studied and practiced with every specification followed out through love and fear of God, which waters the garden of the soul and advances the life spiritually, while neglecting it is robbery toward God bringing His sure visitation upon the neglectful, a loss that cannot be afforded.

The promised blessing is both temporal and spiritual. Bringing the full tithe into the storehouse so there will be provision and support for His house is plain duty and a test of obedience, and God invites His people to test His promise to pour out blessing beyond capacity to receive. In its context the blessing includes rebuking the devourer and destroyer, restraining destruction, protecting the produce of the land and fruits of the ground, keeping the vine from dropping fruit early, and making the land delightful so all nations call God's people blessed. Neglecting this duty withholds what belongs to God, brings a curse, and leaves people without His blessing and protection, while God's failure to restrain destruction follows from refusal to be faithful. Withholding tithes and offerings is identified as robbing God and bringing a curse on the whole nation, answered definitely when His people claim not to know how they robbed Him.

God's people are to bring all the tithes to His treasury to support His work, and He promises to bless the faithful including crops, livestock, livelihood and other means, while withholding brings loss of blessing and a curse. Blessings received come through Jesus Christ, and giving is response to dependence on God who gives life, health and every good gift. Bringing the full tithe for sacred work and honoring God with substance brings His promised blessing, while withholding tithes and offerings robs God and limits blessings received. When people give willingly and follow His plan, prosperity attends labor in proportion to obedience, and the tithing system is not to be set aside in the last days but the spirit of sacrifice is to grow for the closing work. Faithfulness brings rich abundant blessing, prosperity and favor in proportion to obedience and willingness, while withholding and selfish use brings curse, affliction, loss and spiritual decline in proportion to unwillingness and desire to keep what is His.

Putting farms, business and earthly increase first robs God of prayer, worship and service time owed to Him and brings a curse rather than blessing, since all money and property is the Lord's and faithfulness requires giving in deed and in truth to spread truth rather than withholding or putting property into children's hands to escape responsibility. God's claim on what He has given must be honored first, and withholding His bounties and using them selfishly brings a curse instead of blessing, while after meeting His claim His people must care for the poor and needy even by sacrifice. The principle of systematic giving applies in every age, and when His people limit offerings they also limit blessings He gives them, with the needs of the last days calling for even deeper sacrifice. God promises to bless those who consecrate tithes and offerings as loyalty and submission to His sovereignty by increasing substance and giving abundance. Honoring Him with time and physical and mental strength in service belongs with bringing tithes, and those who do so walk in light and triumph.

When all the tithes are brought into the treasury, blessings follow and gifts and offerings for sacred work are multiplied tenfold, keeping the channel between God and people open. God claims a portion of what He gives and calls for it to be returned before every other claim, blessing people so they can bless others; when His portion is returned the remainder is blessed, but when withheld the whole is sooner or later cursed. His claims come first even when income is small and giving requires sacrifice, and He promises blessing to those who give with grateful willing hearts including abundance enabling further giving. God promises blessing to those who deal honestly by bringing tithes and offerings, while withholding violates His plain command, robs Him, and deprives them of blessing. Bringing what belongs to God into His treasury so His house is provided and His work sustained is plain duty and condition of prosperity and happiness, stated so plainly as to leave no excuse and allow no valid excuse for withholding, with special blessing promised to the obedient. Returning what He claims as His own to support ministers who teach truth is obedient duty and privilege bringing happiness, with abundant blessing poured out and crops protected from destruction.

Bringing the full tithe is plain duty with promise to bless obedient stewards with prosperity in temporal and spiritual things, while withholding is disobedience hindering His work and leaving people exposed to loss and calamity as God permits the destroyer to act. Withholding tithes and offerings robs God and deprives the giver of promised blessing, for prosperity or hardship corresponds to obedience. Honoring Him with substance and firstfruits brings abundance and plenty, while withholding brings poverty and want, and He gives blessings so people will make generous and liberal returns from means He has given. Obedience is duty for its own sake, yet God in compassion joins His command with promises of richest blessings and returns proportionate to what is given, inviting His people to prove Him by bringing gifts and declaring He will reward obedience with abundant heavenly blessing beyond containment. The following promise adds restraining the devourer and protecting crops and vines, with blessings accompanying the command while obedience remains duty in itself. God tenderly and truly makes a contract to give blessing in return for what is brought, a contract signed through Christ in whom richest blessings are given, and withholding returns declared due is selfishly robbing Him and trifling with Him.

The promised blessing is not money poured from heaven, since God has entrusted material means, food and clothing to people as His helping hand and tells them what to do with it to support the spread of the message, open new fields and send missionaries so people hear the gospel. He will not fill His empty treasury by raining money from heaven, so gospel ministry is maintained by faithful returning of what He requires, and withholding is robbery revealing selfishness and disregard for His claims, not a call to give only a partial share. To those faithful in duty He promises a greater blessing, the outpouring of His Spirit. Parental dishonesty in robbing God and failure to teach children to bring gifts and realize obligations hardens them against preaching when grown and robs God to the third and fourth generation through children and grandchildren with no inclination to fear and obey Him. Obedience that proves God by unswerving fidelity in rendering His own in tithes and offerings, especially as the great day nears, brings overflowing blessing from opened windows with strengthened faith, removed doubts and perplexities, fears overcome by assurance, strength to fight spiritual battles, clear view of acceptance, favor, light, growth in grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, and steadfastness in abounding work. This belongs to the present time of cooperation with God and heavenly agencies while light remains, because the great day is near and night is coming when no one can work, so light must be obeyed lest darkness come.

The outpoured blessing is an extra spiritual endowment of the Holy Spirit and heaven's light to quicken energies and lodge motive power in the heart to arouse the missionary spirit. It is given to be used in cooperation with God, since He does nothing for reclaiming men without human agencies, and must be employed by every man, woman and youth in exercising talents, making personal efforts, leaving ease and pleasant homes, going into missionary fields and cities where truth was never lifted, setting forth Christ crucified, warning men to repent because Christ is coming with power and great glory, and carrying light to regions where the standard was never planted. If bound in a napkin and hidden instead of put out to the exchangers it is wasted, and those choosing selfishness and ease fall back into deathlike slumber under curse as lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God. The baptism of the Holy Spirit alone can bring the church to its right position and prepare God's people for the approaching conflict, imparting reviving fullness too abundant to contain. Heaven's light is given for a purpose, that it shine forth in practical works of righteousness, with those abundantly blessed retaining favor by working according to increased light, sending its rays to others, showing deeper fervent piety as those bought with precious blood, clothed with garments of salvation, and representing Christ.

The promised blessing of opened windows is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and shower of blessing on church and congregation, coming when the way is prepared by confessing and putting away sins and claiming promises with contrite hearts in faith. Then Satan, opposing influences and evil powers cannot shut heaven's windows, shut out God's presence, or prevent blessing and work. Heaven remains open and God is still waiting to be gracious with abundance of grace, power and blessing, having not closed heaven's windows or stopped offering blessing. Loss of power and of godliness comes not from God withholding but from separation from Him, unconverted barrenness of soul, and conformity to worldly customs and practices. The blessing is not felt because faith is lacking, because people look to themselves instead of fixing the eye of faith on the cross, exalting Jesus and relying wholly on His merits as strength and salvation, and receiving it requires thorough conversion, giving the heart to God, deeper work of grace, and thorough preparation to enter the work.

The image of heaven's windows opened applies to God sending rich floods of light, grace and power which He longs to give but which are rejected when people do not desire His way of working. The same image applies to earnest, fervent, contrite prayer bringing down showers of grace, while worldliness, selfishness and weak devotion hinder usefulness, and a clear view of Christ's cross turns people to humility, repentance and gratitude. The opening of windows and pouring out of blessing describes blessings often experienced in Sabbath meetings including sweet blessing and victory after earnest prayer for healing. It describes the abundant blessing at the 1893 General Conference where the Spirit was revealed as many received the Laodicean message, confessed sins and repented, present for all in the channel of light but missed by those refusing repentance. It applies to the blessing at the last Conference meant to quicken energies and deepen sense of truth's importance so gifts are used in missionary work to carry the message to those who have not heard it. God opens windows by revealing His Spirit with the Sun of Righteousness risen and strong beams from the throne, giving richest truths ever committed to mortals with righteousness, peace, full joy and consecrating presence penetrating everywhere to sanctify souls.

That revealing comes when testimonies correct and counsel the church and many apply the Laodicean message by confessing sins and repenting in contrition, hearing Jesus' voice, clearing rubbish from the heart's door, opening to welcome the heavenly guest, and placing themselves in the channel of light to receive most precious blessings. Those with the same repentance and confession to do yet refusing to fall into line remain poverty-stricken and blinded, unable to discern revealings of the Spirit, see the Lord is gracious, or hear the true Shepherd because they listen to a stranger, while Satan casts hellish shadow athwart their pathway to obstruct every ray. Opening the windows on heaven's side happens when bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness shine fully into the heart and are spread to others in every possible way. Especially this means careful tender regard for workers sent to hard deprived fields by making them as comfortable and pleasantly situated as possible, providing meat in His house for servants' needs, even giving a sick feeble worker the Good Samaritan's care with best provision available and a first-class carriage freely charged to account rather than withheld for fear of taxing the conference. To be penny wise and pound foolish and permit such suffering is cause for grief, for what is done to His disciple is done to Jesus, and the Lord blesses such love expressed toward His workers in hard places.

The verse shows God is behind all His promises and distinctly pledges Himself to answer prayer, with His Word an assurance so positive and ample as to leave no room for mistake or limitation, Yea and Amen in Christ, with resources that cannot be exhausted. It promises abundant blessing to those who draw near to Him, applied to His help in response to humble contrite prayer, inviting to prayer and promising to answer. People may prove the Lord by trusting Him with needs, presenting necessities in prayer and relying on His resources and promised answer when money is scarce. They are called to bring all tithes and test His promise to pour out abundant blessing, applied to giving willingly to support His work. The call to test Him applies to trusting and obeying Him in daily life, bringing humility rather than self-exaltation, trusting and acting on His word by living faith, for He means what He says and His mercy, knowledge and power are available to receivers. Proving Him by keeping the mind stayed on Him in faith leading to perfection of character brings His self-revelation with wisdom and guidance at every step so recipients hear the Saviour's words and communicate precious truth to all parts of the world. Proving Him means working on the plan of addition by adding grace to grace and reaching out for souls not knowing truth to convince, help and bless them so they may obtain the crown of life.

The call to test the Lord applies to self-denial and gifts for His work, as when families give to help teach the poor about the Saviour they will be blessed. It is a call to trust Him and increase faith, and He may bring difficult situations to test faith but does not leave in despair, surprising and encouraging dependents and doing more than can be asked or thought. Receiving the promised blessing requires thorough conversion and preparation, fixing faith on the cross and Christ's merits, confessing and forsaking sin, coming in the Son's name, obeying precepts, and claiming promises in faith. Then no evil power can shut it out, and when people who received great light humble themselves and confess, promises will be fulfilled and God works among them renewing humble contrite souls to pure holy character, but He will not support those turning from truth and righteousness. When God's people humble themselves and seek Him He can give blessing too great to contain. Directing tithe to urgently needy ministers and undone work does not withhold it from His treasury. The tithes of souls converted by earnest unselfish labor belong in the treasury as converts bring tithes to supply means, with both men and women appointed bringing sheaves, so withholding just pay while letting God-fearing workers labor unsupported, or leaving self-denial to a few hard-working women when means are scarce, violates the just due every laborer is to receive.

Honoring God by bringing tithes together with time, strength and abilities in service with spirit, soul and body brings walking in light and triumph in Him. Faithful giving and wholehearted cooperation advance the cause and make ingathering of souls possible, while withholding support reflects selfishness and murmuring against God and withholding what belongs to Him is robbery. Where there is life there will be increase and growth through constant interchange of receiving from God and restoring His property to Him, with His treasury the storehouse from which to draw to sustain gospel ministry in all parts of His vineyard. If men and women are covetous and will not return His portion, God is robbed and the work designed for the world is neglected, and those unfaithful stewards will be charged with misappropriation of their Lord's goods. Withholding tithes and offerings is unfaithfulness for which blessings may be withdrawn, and God also tests through blessings so giving should reflect means and gratitude for what He has given. Obeying His direction on the tenth of all increase entrusted by Him brings safety and security, while setting aside His instruction for human plans is disobedience, and His requirement tied to blessing or curse leaves no freedom to use the tithe as pleased, for it is not a fund for the poor but provides for faithful messengers opening His Word and carrying its light to darkness.

God will abundantly bless those faithful in bringing tithes and offerings, but heaven's curse rests on the dishonest in this matter, for robbing God is dishonesty to be avoided by walking honestly before Him since all things are His. He has entrusted goods to agents for advancement of His work including medical missionary work, requiring a faithful tithe to His treasury or storehouse besides gifts and offerings as the cause demands, and He will not do the work entrusted to men but men must do their part in carrying out redemption provided at infinite cost, realizing accountability and acting as His helping hand. Bringing tithes and offerings into the treasury has been followed by conversion of hearts, confession of wrong, thousands of dollars given and hearts filled with love for God, evidencing His work whose greatest miracle is the converted heart. The promise is applied to the Harris Company, which after paying all back tithe adding one fifth received valuable property expected to yield great wealth. The verse means believers should trust God with daily cares instead of wearing themselves with anxious worry, knowing He will care for them and Jesus will deepen and widen blessings, and applied to camp-meetings it means coming prepared to work, leaving home cares to find Jesus, and bringing offerings proportioned to benefits as gratitude to the Creator, with everyone able bringing something and none coming empty-handed.

Teaching Faithful Stewardship

The verse states the covenant and contract between God and His people so plainly that no one can say the duty could not be understood, for His plan for tithes and offerings is definitely stated and clearly understandable, requiring faithfulness to the contract He has made in return for His blessings, including the gift of His only begotten Son to die, by faithfully bringing the full tithe to His appointed place so His house is supplied. It is God's own ordinance and not a human request, laying duty down in clear lines so that no one who desires to do duty can excuse withholding tithes and offerings, and all who fear God must show themselves faithful stewards and repent. Every bearer of truth must warn, educate, and rebuke any neglect of this duty, for robbing God in tithes and offerings brings a pronounced curse upon the delinquent while obedience brings rich blessings to sustain and carry on His work in the world and send truth to all parts of the world.

Tithing is a plain command with no exceptions or conditions, requiring even obedient children dependent on God for all they have to return the portion He has marked as His own and to place it in the treasury with gifts and offerings so His house is supplied, and everyone who claims to believe in God must comply. This giving is God's appointed way of carrying forward His work of sending the light of truth to those in darkness in all parts of the world, uplifting Christ and proclaiming saving truth to all nations. Insulting God by ignoring His love and requirements, treating His entrusted gifts as human productions to be used as pleased, and leaving His work undone brings His judgments, for He can easily scatter the possessions of all who dishonor Him. Paying tithe is required and not optional or non-essential, but heaven's plan to teach that people are subjects of Christ's kingdom, with the Lord Himself plainly requiring all to bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there is supply in His house, inviting His people to prove Him, and promising to open heaven and pour out blessing beyond capacity to receive. Following its instruction brings good to the obedient and helps others by example, while refusing to comply after warning brings the dealing described in the chapter.

The command is holy ground to be treated with reverence and still binds now, condemning any teaching that tithes should not be paid, and it describes the present condition exactly, proving that any suggestion to withhold tithes and offerings is not from the Lord. It still binds God's people near the end, exposing many Seventh-day Adventists as robbing God when they withhold tithes and offerings, with obedience bringing blessing poured out without room to receive it and withholding bringing a curse. Claiming not to understand this clear duty is no valid excuse before God's judgment. The verse plainly states duties that God's people must recognize and follow, yet clouded spiritual perception keeps them from seeing those duties. Disobedience and dishonest dealings with God and others bring judgment, while returning a faithful tithe helps the work of proclaiming the gospel go forward with power and is a way to do God's will on earth as it is done in heaven. Reading Malachi with the Spirit brings a sense of personal responsibility for tithes and offerings, for what people possess belongs to God who has entrusted it to them, and God calls everyone to bring a faithful tithe into His treasury so that it will not be empty.

Returning the tithe is a clear duty with no excuse for evasion, because the tithe belongs to God and is reserved to support His servants as they open the Scriptures and bring the light of salvation to people in spiritual darkness. Withholding it to serve personal desires or for personal use selfishly uses God's resources, deprives souls of needed light, obstructs the spread of truth, and shows disloyalty to God. Ministers have a solemn duty to teach and warn every church member on this point with personal labor and instruction, requiring not one-fourth or one-half but an honest full tithe to be brought into the storehouse so there may be meat in His house to sustain gospel laborers and supply the treasury with means to carry forward His work. The verse is God's direct and explicit challenge to prove Him by faithful paying, with promise to open the windows of heaven and pour out blessing so great there is not room to receive it, and failure to render to the Lord His own is robbery toward God that brings His curse. Neglecting this instruction leaves a shortage in God's treasury and hinders His work.

Ministers must teach every church member, rich or poor, to pay an honest tithe and to give as God has prospered them, for faithful giving provides funds to pay workers and advance missionary work. Neglecting to do so leaves people feeling secure while they fail to obey God, and the church becomes lifeless and ineffective. Ministers are to teach this duty and ensure that God's work is supplied, for the tithe belongs to God, must be brought into His treasury for the purpose He has appointed, is sacred and must not be kept for personal use or diverted even to purposes people consider emergencies or the Lord's work, and withholding it is robbery. When ministers teach members to give according to God's plan, the treasury can meet its obligations and missionary work can advance.

God's servants should testify plainly about returning God's proportion in tithes and offerings, for bringing the tithes is the example God Himself has set, and withholding what is His brings the Lord's curse. The proclamation of the gospel depends on the labors and voluntary gifts of all God's people, and a portion of income belongs to God to be sacredly devoted to His work as the revenue of the gospel which is no longer ours. Those who preach mercy must also teach the duty of sustaining God's work with means, by both precept and example, without weakening the teaching by their own course. To take from God's treasury to serve self or to serve others in secular business is sacrilege, diverting from God's altar what is dedicated to Him, and no one in a strait place may take money consecrated to religious purposes for personal advantage even while intending to repay it later; it is far better to cut expenses to match income, restrict wants, and live within means than to use the Lord's money for secular purposes.

A sacred portion of income belongs to God and must be devoted as sacred support for His work, and those who proclaim the gospel, including church officers, must teach this duty by both words and example. Appeals can awaken people to recognize neglected duty and give intelligently, bringing tithes at the right time along with freewill offerings. Those long in the truth are responsible for setting a good example through their conduct, for being unfaithful with the tithe is wrong and can give those new to the truth an excuse to be unfaithful as well. Converts should be taught this duty clearly as an important part of bringing them into the truth, for refusing the tithing system can lead people to turn away from the faith, and bringing the tithe is both a duty and an acknowledgment of dependence on God, with the command plain and giving no excuse for withholding.

Every church member, rich or poor, must give in tithes and offerings as God has prospered him, and to withhold them is robbing God, a crime rooted in selfishness and worldliness that puts souls in danger of eternal ruin. Conference presidents and ministers must impress the character of this crime on the people and educate every member in this duty with devotion and a burden for the work, beyond merely preaching. When they do, God makes their labors a blessing with fruit seen in souls, fills the treasury so honest debts to workers can be paid, puts many more laborers in the field, and greatly advances missionary work; when they fail, they neglect their duty as watchmen and stand guilty for the loss. Each church is called to bring its tithe into the Lord's storehouse so there will be support for the work of ministry, and faithful teaching of this duty can help provide for more ministers to carry the gospel to new places, while the truth of that duty is to be plainly taught and obeyed even when someone says he cannot see the obligation. Ministers are also to practice self-denial, taking less from the treasury so others who feel called to serve can share in its support.

The verse is to be studied carefully, obeyed, and taught to others so they may learn how to receive the blessing of God, with those who receive it becoming educators instructing others in obedience. When all come into harmonious action in obeying it, they will see the salvation of God, and God will bless financially and bless spiritually those who deal faithfully with Him. Parents should train children to deny themselves, return to the Lord what is His, use their means according to His directions, bring gifts to God and realize their obligations to Him even when their gifts are small, for returning the tithe is a command and a safeguard against selfishness and self-indulgence. God condemns every unfaithfulness in withholding tithes and offerings and requires an honest tithe plus liberal gifts, having entrusted means, food, and clothing to people as His helping hand rather than filling His empty treasury by raining money from heaven, so the gospel ministry is maintained by faithful returning of what He requires. Parental dishonesty in robbing God and failure to teach children hardens them against preaching when grown and robs God to the third and fourth generation through children and grandchildren with no inclination to fear and obey God.

Withholding tithes and offerings to save wealth for children fails this family duty, and churches should teach every member, rich or poor, to give as God has prospered them, for faithful giving provides a treasury to pay workers their due and advance missionary work, while a church that robs God cannot prosper. Bringing all tithes and offerings as God's own into the Lord's treasury and proving faithful in paying them makes one's record right with God, and every church member is bound by covenant relation with God to do this, denying self of every extravagant outlay of means and practicing economy in home life. The means thus brought in are to give adequate support to those who devote their time to saving souls, so their just wages are not begrudged, they do not lack necessities, they can live comfortably, and they can lead in donations, supplying facilities for carrying the message rapidly into new fields including the needy Southern field, sustaining established work, entering new territory, and providing many more laborers, while withholding retards the work and brings God's rebuke.

God's work on earth depends on the faithful stewardship of the means entrusted to His people, with possessions and their increase belonging to God so that withholding what is due to Him is robbery. He calls His people to render to Him what is His in tithes, gifts, and offerings with liberal, open-handed generosity, and His blessing cannot come in fullness and power while they are slothful and refuse to bear burdens, for failure to give and serve hinders those who would work. Withholding from God's work and turning means to selfish use leaves others without needed help and is a betrayal of trust, and stewards are accountable for using means faithfully without wasting even a small amount of what He has entrusted to them. Faithful tithes and offerings brought into God's treasury fill it so workers can be sent to advance the work and reach people in spiritual darkness and to help bring people to knowledge of the truth, while withholding all or part impedes this work; resources are to be managed carefully and used to support those in need as well as the saving mission.

God will not do the work He has entrusted to men; men must do their part in carrying out the plan of redemption provided at infinite cost, realizing their accountability to Him and acting as His helping hand. He has entrusted goods to His agents for advancement of His work in the world, including medical missionary work, requiring a faithful tithe to His treasury or storehouse besides gifts and offerings as the cause demands, abundantly blessing the faithful while the curse of heaven rests on the dishonest, for robbing God is dishonesty to be avoided by walking honestly before Him because all things are His. Workers show this faithful giving by giving both their tithes and offerings. Dissatisfaction with how the work is managed is no reason to withhold tithe, for it challenges people to test God by faithfully doing duty with promise of blessing beyond what they can receive; grievances and complaints should instead be brought openly to the proper people and to those responsible, in the right spirit, while remaining faithful to God's work.

Tithes and offerings belong to God and are to be brought into His work, not withheld because someone believes leaders are using money wrongly or from dissatisfaction with how Conference business or ministers use the means, even if unworthy ministers receive some of it. Withholding them for any reason, even disagreement with brethren, is unfaithfulness toward God and sin that braves His curse, tending to poverty of soul and increased financial difficulty, while giving them gladly and freely honors God and withholding selfishly impoverishes the soul. Lack of confidence in management at the heart of the work gives no right to stop paying, for the tithe is sacred and reserved by God for Himself to sustain gospel laborers, and to withhold it from ignorance or dissatisfaction is to rob God and prove unfaithful. Duty is to pay gladly and freely, stand in place and not be unfaithful, do what can be done to correct evil management while leaving erring managers accountable for their own sin, make complaints plainly and openly in the right spirit to the proper ones with petitions for adjustment, continue faithful in giving and not withdraw because others do not do right, with each doing duty while seeking correction, for withholding what belongs to God on that ground still brings the curse.

Tithes belong to God and must be faithfully returned, withholding them is robbing God, and God's people must be plainly instructed to give what He claims as His own, together with offerings. Withholding tithes and offerings from the treasury is a fearful guilt, neglecting to render to God the things that are His is sin, and God will not bless His people while they disregard His plan of benevolence. The duty must be pressed by pointed, practical teaching that shows the danger and sinfulness of selfishness and covetousness, until conviction fastens on minds and the icy chill of selfishness is broken, so that those who would otherwise do nothing are aroused to give to the cause of God. The verse gives God's plain command to bring all the tithes into the treasury of God's house, thereby ordaining organization and the ways and means for forwarding God's work in days of peril through His appointed agencies. Denouncing the church as Babylon and standing against organization opposes this command, neglects God-appointed work, shows unscriptural views of the nature, office, and power of God's appointed agencies, and does not bring greater efficiency to the cause and kingdom of God.

Offerings Generosity and Self-Denial

Beyond the tithe, gifts proportionate to means and given wholeheartedly in recognition that every blessing comes from God should support the cause, and the promise applies both to the poor whose small offerings God can bless to do much and to those with greater means who should give accordingly. The tithe is to be devoted to His work together with offerings given gratefully and freely from the heart, supporting gospel proclamation and salvation worldwide, so that returning a tenth with liberal offerings gives abundance to carry the work forward. God claims a tenth along with liberal offerings to support His work, as part of a divinely appointed plan in which gratitude is shown by returning a portion, for He provides means and calls for gratitude by returning a portion in tithes and offerings, which are the ordained means to advance His cause.

Returning tithes and offerings is gratitude for God's love and response to what He first entrusted, asked to test allegiance and to put means and compassionate labor to work helping needy, perishing souls. Tithes, gifts and offerings belong to God to be returned as signs of loyalty, dependence and gratitude, with promise to bless givers and make them channels, and gratitude must be shown in action since faith without works is worthless, and because God continually gives obligation continues and blessing is withheld when people weary of giving. Giving must be willing, glad, grateful and free, not grudgingly or of necessity, acknowledging dependence and His mercy in supplying needs, and those who prove faithful stewards are entrusted with greater trusts. Withholding for reasons such as belief that leaders use money wrongly, disagreement with brethren, or dissatisfaction with Conference business or ministers even if unworthy men receive some, is unfaithfulness bringing curse and tending to poverty of soul and increased financial difficulty, while duty is to pay gladly and freely, stand in place, seek correction of evil management and leave erring managers accountable.

Giving is to be free, with each person responsible for deciding whether to give much or little, with regular offerings as well as the tithe, and ministers should not pressure or condemn over the amount. The value of an offering is measured not by amount but by motive and a willing, loving, cheerful, thankful heart, and God accepts small gifts offered sincerely according to what a man has, with wise use of littles bringing increase. Giving is to be cheerful, glad, willing and thankful, emptying the heart of selfishness, using substance to bless the suffering and advance the kingdom to place eternal life within reach of the perishing, and what is given is made secure and sent before the giver while what is retained is to eternal loss. Poverty or small income does not excuse neglect, people should give according to what they have, and God's promises, provision and providential opening of ways apply to the poor as well as those with abundance.

A tenth of all earned and blessings received is to be set apart, both rich and poor according to ability, saving from worldliness and selfishness, with the poor giving what they can with self-denial and even small self-sacrificing offerings recognized and blessed. The duty does not permit pressuring people beyond their means, and money needed to feed a hungry family should not be taken, for God's people are to bring tithes and offerings with each bearing a fair share, and the verse does not require pledges beyond means or depriving families of necessities. Pledged gifts and offerings are a solemn commitment witnessed and recorded in heaven, and nothing excuses breaking that pledge. Honesty includes keeping pledges and settling what is owed and one's account with God when means are available, and neglecting vows and leaving pledges unpaid are failures for which people must answer and settle His claims.

Bringing all the tithes means giving back all God claims including a portion of all income and using goods lent in trust to relieve brethren in poverty and break the yoke of oppression. The command speaks to every church, family and individual and will be met in judgment in revelation of good that might have been done. Entrusted money should be used faithfully to relieve suffering, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, advance truth and build God's kingdom, demonstrating love for God and neighbor. Gifts and offerings belong in His treasury to support His house, and giving what is not needed for comfort expresses love and care, applied to helping people in need.

After meeting God's claim first, His people must care for the poor and needy even by sacrifice, using means to relieve suffering, clothe the naked, feed the hungry, and help people like Lazarus. Withholding His bounties and using them selfishly brings a curse instead of a blessing. Substance generously divided with brethren laboring with meager facilities in destitute fields brings rich blessings, while those selfishly holding means in emergency will suffer loss of all, and those truly converted who have more than sufficient will freely impart abundance to help the poorer. Hoarded wealth becomes a curse, and God cannot preserve and bless possessions when owners feel no obligation to help proclaim truth in new fields.

Many rich men are unfaithful stewards because they rob God in acquiring and using means, neglect Him as Proprietor, and fail to relieve the suffering and oppressed. The rich man failed to tithe as acknowledgment that all came from God, and money held by worldly men all their lives is God's own kept from Him, as Michigan's withholding shows selfishness rather than liberality. The verse calls for curtailing expenses and turning money spent for self-gratification, pictures, idols and unnecessary possessions into the treasury, including selling houses and lands to give alms and sending many small contributions, and money spent on unnecessary things limits what can be given. Meat in His house is resources for ministers and missionaries who bring truth to seekers, and withholding leaves a great debt while God tests those He has blessed to see their response to His benefits.

Cutting off needless indulgence, extravagance, luxuries and household comforts and placing the money saved in the treasury supplies God's house, brings rich blessing with more to give, and limits resources for the kingdom when spent selfishly. Money saved by giving up needless indulgences can be placed for provision, and such self-denial receives rich blessing. Believers who cannot go themselves can help reach distant lands by tithes and freewill offerings, avoiding unnecessary expenses, and the means thus provided are to open work where truth was never heard and to support women missionaries in destitute fields without a shepherd. Spending on household comforts and wants without limiting desires diverts God's treasures to human purposes with loss of rich blessings and spiritual growth, while limiting those desires brings blessing to oneself and family.

Supplying the storehouse with tithes and as far as possible gifts and offerings, with temperance in eating, drinking and dressing and care over buildings and furnishings, is a means of laying up treasure in heaven. Giving tithes with offerings is part of laying up treasure in heaven and not losing reward. The Lord's abundant gifts in nature in sunshine, rain, dew, crops and fruits are reason to return His own, and using money in saving souls lays up eternal treasure, with regard for tithes shaped by His claims rather than excess or neglect. What is given is made secure while what is retained to increase earthly treasure profits nothing and is to eternal loss, for God reserves the portion not to enrich Himself but for human good.

Giving to support God's work does not enrich God whose treasures are already His, but benefits the giver by laying up treasure in heaven and helping bring people to salvation, while putting earthly wealth first robs the giver of eternal riches. Returning to the Lord His own is the whole duty and privilege of His steward, requiring every dollar to be placed where it does greatest good, including faithful disposition by will after family need so the cause receives its portion for present use to produce a harvest of souls. Gifts given now will advance the work especially in cities and new fields such as Greater New York and produce a harvest of souls in the kingdom. People should set aside means and return what belongs to Him to meet needs and advance His cause.

Tithes and offerings are His portion and keeping them back fails to answer His claim, with worldly noise preventing earnest listening, and meeting this neglected obligation helps make the gospel available as He intends. Entrusted means are to be used faithfully and not spent selfishly while the needy are left without help and His work neglected. Such selfish use is robbery, while faithful investment in winning people produces enduring good works. All money, property and means belong to the Lord and men and women are only stewards to bring His goods into His storehouse, the full treasury supplied as they listen for His counsel.

Withholding by treating property as their own, tying it up in houses or land, or wasting it to gratify pride, appetite, pleasure and needless trinkets robs the treasury and lets Satan triumph, while turning waste into the treasury fills it for blessing men and bringing truth to darkness, in which angels blend intelligence with human ability. Money now spent on needless trinkets and indulgences belongs in the treasury to send souls heavenward, revealing cooperation with God, and fixing eyes on the cross teaches sowing liberally through self-denial. As property accumulates and prosperity increases, wealth is to be set aside faithfully before the rest is used, with thanksgiving to advance the cause. Trusting riches or failing to consecrate them turns them to harmful uses and temptation harming giver and others.

Hoarding means lent by God for personal or family wealth, or putting property into children's hands to escape responsibility, conflicts with bringing tithes and can damage spiritual life including children's interests. Spending the Lord's money on tobacco while giving more to that indulgence than to the poor and to God continues robbery of what sustains the gospel, relieves the poor and supplies the cause while souls perish, and overcoming hurtful lust should turn needless expense to the treasury in self-denial and temperance. Wealth should not be misused on costly buildings when needed to carry the gospel to places that have not received it, and the call is applied to princely offerings to meet ever-increasing opportunities connected with a school. He will also restrain the devourer, preserve crops and vines, and make them a blessing among the nations.

Enough must be willingly given to finish a house built for God so it is comfortable, neat and convenient for His holy presence and never left in debt, for debt dishonors Him. The verse is applied to giving offerings in gratitude for benefits and coming to religious meetings prepared to give according to means and not empty-handed. Returning the Lord's own with offerings is applied to setting aside part of wages for God's work, including providing religious books for families unable to buy them, and tithes should support mission fields, with withholding calling for repentance and true conversion. God's people must return what belongs to Him and bring offerings in keeping with blessings given, with the prospered responding in self-sacrifice and gratitude rather than letting possessions and business take devotion, for withholding turns blessings into a curse.

The verse also applies to giving God time, physical and mental strength, service, affection and property. Putting farms, business and earthly increase first robs Him of prayer, worship and service, and true tithing means denying self, taking up the cross and following Christ with no reservation. God accepts only offerings in righteousness from a spiritual priesthood loving Him supremely and neighbor as self with no reservation of self or property, since selfishness lies at the foundation of all sin. Giving is continual because receiving from God is continual, seen in rain, fruitful seasons, sunshine, dew, crops, and His promise that seedtime and harvest shall not cease. To become impatient in giving is to wish the Father to cease bestowing gifts, with no excuse to stop unless God stops giving, which He never does.

Systematic giving applies in every age and is not to be enforced by men but obeyed willingly from the heart as the Sabbath is. The needs of the last days call for even deeper sacrifice, and now is the time to render to God and carry truth into new territory. When His people limit offerings they also limit blessings, and prosperity comes in proportion to obedience. God waits for means so His house is provided, and people should not hold back when angels delight to do His will. They must first give themselves to God and then bring gifts.

Mission Urgency and Advance

The prophecy has a special application to the last days, calling God's people to bring a proportion of their means as a freewill offering to support His work, with the promised blessing attached to that duty of giving and not to speaking or praying in meetings. It is God's present call in the closing years of probation with the great day at hand, commanding every soul to bring all the tithes into the storehouse so His house is supplied and to prove Him for the promised opening of heaven beyond capacity to receive. The requirement is given to do good and turn the soul from sin to righteousness, returning a certain portion as His own while acknowledging dependence on God and accountability to Him even though He is pleased for His people to enjoy His goods. Every convert to the truth and every newly raised church must be decidedly instructed in the Lord's requirements for tithes and offerings in the spirit of Christ, and the means thus gathered is to be invested in missionary work to sustain foreign missions and fulfill the commission to teach all nations.

The verse belongs to the call for a refining, winnowing process and transformation of character in every church because the Lord is soon to come, so that the church puts on Christ's righteousness and vessels unto honor receiving the latter rain are discerned from those who do not serve God. Its passage contrasts the faithful who honor God and are remembered as His own with the apparent success of the proud and wicked who will ultimately be distinguished, while every soul continuing in sin in present light will be blinded and accept delusions from Satan as earth's history closes. The demand is urgent because great things are about to take place and time is now especially precious, requiring truth to principle and an undivided heart in bringing all tithes for food in His house. Because the Lord is soon to come His people must hasten to be honest with God without delay, curtailing expenses and turning money spent for self-gratification such as pictures of self and friends into the treasury, with owners of houses and lands selling to give alms and putting every talent of means and ability to use while the day lasts. Withholding tithes and offerings is robbing God and leaves a great debt to the Lord of hosts, while God's benefits test what response those He has blessed will make in giving back what belongs to Him.

Now is the time to bring tithes and offerings, for upon His people lies the solemn charge of representing Him as the light of the world, and the means thus brought enable truth to be carried into new territory and the warning to be given to those in darkness for which the church will be held responsible. Gifts of influence, property, capital, money, time and strength entrusted to men are to be rightly valued and used with the cooperation of every soul to relieve the needs of His cause and advance interests dearest to His heart, requiring a faithful tithe and a willing thank offering. Many will not be blessed till they redeem the past by accurate reckoning, bringing to the Lord what was robbed from His work with peace offerings, acknowledging wrong in misappropriating His goods and freely and fully repenting so He will forgive. The verse is God's message to His stewards of means in Australia, in America, in Africa and everywhere to faithfully return all He calls for in tithes and offerings so His house is supplied, and He blesses those who faithfully make those returns. Offerings brought into His treasury are to advance work in new fields, given willingly from the heart with self-denial and self-sacrifice to provide what is needed, and such giving brings His blessing.

Churches in Australia and New Zealand were to do far more in 1893 than in any previous year in supplying means to the Lord's house, for a great revolution in giving must take place there before the work can greatly progress. Christmas is best observed by directing gifts to God for His work rather than spending them on presents and trifles, bringing offerings into His treasury to support it. The verse calls for cooperation in saving souls by sincere service and self-denial, giving means to plant His standard where truth was never heard and to carry the work forward in foreign fields, denying unnecessary spending and giving for Him as He gave His life. Those who rob God by holding back cannot come expecting blessing and exaltation like others but will murmur and complain, for holding back shuts out His blessing. It applies to advancing the third angel's message by rendering to the Lord His own to relieve His work of poverty, giving cheerfully and liberally to provide laborers and facilities for entering new territory.

Hoarded wealth becomes a curse that God cannot preserve and bless when owners feel no obligation to help proclaim truth in new fields, while substance generously divided with brethren laboring with meager facilities in destitute fields brings rich blessings in return. Those truly converted with more than sufficient for immediate necessities will freely impart abundance to help the poorer, but those selfishly holding means in this emergency will soon suffer loss of all, since scarcity retards the work and His rebuke rests on those who do not come up to His help against the mighty powers of darkness. Faithfully bringing to His treasury the means He has lent causes His work to make rapid advancement, opens the way for the world to hear the message for this time, wins many souls to the truth and hastens the day of Christ's coming. When hearts are filled with love for Christ and every member is imbued with self-sacrifice and thorough earnestness there will be no lack of funds for home or foreign missions, resources will be multiplied, a thousand doors of usefulness will be opened with invitation to enter, and had this purpose of giving the message of mercy been carried out Christ would already have come and the saints would have received their welcome into the city of God.

The money now brought into His treasury is not enough to meet the demand for giving the sacred, elevating, sanctifying truths of the gospel, working barren fields, employing workers to sow truth and garner the harvest, and planting truth anew in new places. Withholding tithes and offerings as continual robbery of His portion leaves only cheap, inexpensive plans shaped by selfishness and cupidity, whereas if God were not robbed one hundred times more work could be done, and learning and practicing self-denial and self-sacrifice in giving would make the church the light of the world. Faithful bringing of entrusted means advances His work through meetinghouses, sanitariums, schools and more facilities, helps win people to truth, clothes souls with Christ's righteousness, gives the trumpet a certain sound and hastens Christ's coming. Means are to be kept ready so workers raised up can be helped at once when God directs, with no dollar spent needlessly and with means going to needy new efforts rather than places already established, while a just tithe from all with liberal offerings systematically given, even small regular amounts from those unable to give much, makes more facilities available. Every dollar that can be invested should be placed where it will do the greatest good, especially now when means is so much needed to carry the gospel into cities and new fields such as Greater New York, with gifts producing a harvest of souls and with faithful provision by will after family need so His cause receives its portion for present use bringing His blessing.

The outpoured blessing supplies motive force to be used with patience, hope and untiring vigilance in cooperation with human agencies, moving out from Battle Creek to carry light where the standard was never planted, setting forth Christ crucified, calling to repentance and warning that Christ is soon to come with power and great glory. The means provided by self-denial in cutting off needless indulgence and placing savings in the treasury supplies God's house, brings rich blessing with more to give, opens work where truth was never heard, and supports women missionaries laboring in destitute fields where the flock is without a shepherd. Each church bringing its tithe supports the ministry and, with faithful teaching of the duty, provides for more ministers to carry the gospel to new places, while ministers themselves practice self-denial by taking less so others called to serve can share support. The verse is part of promises to be fulfilled in making God's people channels for blessings to flow to support the work in Washington, calling them to carry out His work zealously and unselfishly. It applies now as an appeal to do one's best to advance the work there and meet constant calls from foreign fields for men and means so unbelievers see the work begun can be finished, with a willing collection as the fitting response.

God wants His people to stand in His strength with windows open heavenward and closed earthward so His salvation is revealed. The open windows bring blessing by binding medical missionary work and the gospel together fast and inseparable as a united whole. The blessing comes by connecting talent in individuals, schools and every institution with the management of His work and churches, by carrying the work through committees representing every part instead of leaving two or three minds to rule as kings, and by lifting foreign missionary work to a higher grade than before.
