Malachi 3:11

And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.

God will hold back the destroyer for His people so that their crops are not ruined and their vines do not drop their fruit unripe, and this assurance is given as part of His call to stop robbing Him and to bring all the tithes into His storehouse so that He may open heaven with overflowing blessing.
The devourer is Satan the destroyer, working through pests and wasting forces, whom God restrains for the obedient and lets loose when His restraining hand is withdrawn.
The protection is conditioned on returning a true tenth of all increase, not a part of it, together with trespass offerings, thank offerings, and freewill gifts of the best.
Faithfulness brings temporal security and increase for field, herd, property, and livelihood, and with it the greater gift of the Holy Spirit to make His people channels of blessing, so that all nations see them as blessed in a delightful land.
Withholding tithes and offerings robs God and brings a curse, an empty treasury, and loss, for He then permits the spoiler to waste harvests and bring calamity, and the unfaithful lose both what they kept back and what was entrusted to them.
The appeal belongs especially to the last days when probation is closing, calling every soul and every new church to sustain the ministry and foreign missions by faithful giving, that the work of salvation may go forward throughout the world.

Words and Immediate Context

The promise is that God will hold back the devourer for His people, so that it will not ruin the produce of the ground and the vine will not shed its fruit before it ripens. This protection is given when His people faithfully bring the full tithe with their tithes and offerings, and it belongs with the blessing of the preceding verse as God's provision and agricultural abundance and security for those who obey Him. Faithful stewardship in returning what is His is thus met with preservation of harvest and vines and with supplied means for the work of salvation.

The verse stands in a call to cease robbing God in tithes and offerings by bringing all the tithes into the storehouse, so that there may be food, meat, and provision in His house. Those who in this way prove Him will have the windows of heaven opened and blessing poured out beyond room to receive and to hold. That overflowing blessing includes rebuking the devourer so field crops are not destroyed and vines do not cast fruit before the time in the field, after which all nations will call them blessed because their land is delightful and delightsome. Robbing God is the special sin that brings a curse on the whole nation, and such robbery is widespread, dishonors God through selfish withholding, and will be met in the judgment as the revelation of the charitable good that might have been done.

The devourer is Satan, the destroyer and spoiler, whose destructive work is done through pests and other destroyers and consuming agents against crops, harvests, and vines. For faithful stewards who bring what God has reserved as His own, God restrains that destroyer and preserves temporal blessing with spiritual prosperity. When people disregard God, choose unfaithfulness, and withhold His portion, He does not exercise His restraining power but permits the spoiler and Satan to work, and loss and calamities follow.

In history the promise guarded the Hebrews when they met the requirements for religious and charitable giving, which amounted to fully one-fourth of their income, making faithful giving a condition of prosperity rather than poverty. The same faithfulness follows the example of Abraham, who paid tithe of all he possessed and received. It is to be rendered freely, willingly, and gladly, including by those connected with God's appointed institutions who owe Him intellect and all capabilities, for a faithful tithe is the Lord's portion and to withhold it is to rob God with no safety.

Faithfulness That Secures Blessing

The rebuke of the devourer is conditioned on bringing a true tenth of all increase, all the tithes, into the storehouse so that there is food in God's house. The requirement is not met by one-fourth or one-half, and it binds even those with small means, exactly as arranged, without substituting other charities, gifts, or offerings of human devising. Faithful stewardship in this systematic contribution, giving as prospered, secures the abundant blessing, while the field, orchard, and other fruits of the soil as blessings from God are to be faithfully tithed. The bringing is to be free, willing, and glad, after the example of Abraham who paid tithe of all he possessed, a duty binding even those connected with appointed institutions who owe God intellect and all capabilities, since a faithful tithe is the Lord's portion and to withhold it is to rob God with no safety.

The faithfulness required includes offerings with the tithe, not withholding trespass offerings and thank offerings and gifts. In its special application to the last days the prophecy calls God's people to give a proportion of their substance as a freewill offering to the Lord. That offering was to be the best, without blemish, and freely given, so that blessing would rest on families and possessions, while withholding a proper offering brought curse, loss on harvests and flocks, and affliction.

The promise invites return to God and proving of Him on His stated conditions, with protection of harvest and vine from destruction and early dropping as part of the blessing for those who meet them. In compassion for fallen humanity He joins command about tithes and offerings with promises, and duty should be done for its own sake, yet obedience in giving is rewarded with the richest blessings and with returns proportionate to what is given. He stands behind His promises and pledges Himself to act in behalf of those who do their part, inviting prayer and proving in words so positive and ample as to leave no room for mistake or limitation, from resources that cannot be exhausted.

Protection and Blessing Promised

The promised protection covers temporal and material life, securing crops from loss, keeping vines from dropping fruit before it ripens, and guarding fields, herds, property and livelihood with agricultural abundance and security. The devourer restrained is the destroyer and spoiler at work through consuming and destructive agencies, held back for faithful stewards and permitted to bring calamity when faithfulness fails and restraining power is withdrawn. Faithful bringing of tithes and offerings brings blessing in temporal and spiritual things, with material prosperity and financial prosperity given in proportion to obedience. Even those of small means who bring a true tenth of all increase without substituting other charities or gifts of human devising have their means enlarged for further stewardship, while dishonest and covetous retention forfeits the promised protection and blessing.

Beyond safeguarding harvest and vines, the greater blessing accompanying such faithfulness is the gift of the Holy Spirit to sustain the divine work and bless humanity. The verse stands among gracious assurances that will be fulfilled to a people whose work is to serve as channels of blessing for the work entrusted to them. It belongs to the promises fulfilled when those who have received great light humble themselves before God and confess their sins. Behind the promise stands a pledge to answer prayer, inviting proof of the Lord of hosts with a word so positive and ample as to leave no room for mistake or limitation, acting in their behalf from resources that cannot be exhausted.

Withholding Brings Curse and Loss

Robbing God in tithes and offerings brings a curse upon the whole nation, and continued withholding keeps that curse in place while shutting out blessing, leaving the treasury impoverished and the church backslidden. The curse is reversed only by return through bringing all the tithes into the storehouse so there is food in His house, which opens the way to prove Him and receive blessing poured from the opened windows of heaven beyond room to contain. For those who so return, He holds back the destroyer for their sake so field crops are not ruined and vines do not drop fruit before it ripens, and then all nations call them blessed because their land is delightful. Withholding is linked directly with loss of His blessing and dishonors Him, in contrast to mercy and rich bounties for faithful return. These words will be met in the judgment as the revelation of the charitable good that might have been done in giving back to God what He claimed, and they are to be brought home to every soul now because probation is fast closing.

When people disregard His plain claims, choose the enemy's ground instead of walking in received light and truth, and withhold His reserved portion, He ceases to exercise His restraining power and permits Satan the destroyer and spoiler to do his destructive work. The devourer is Satan, whose work God restrains for faithful stewards in temporal and spiritual things, protecting crops from loss and vines from dropping fruit before ripening. When that restraint is withdrawn, the spoiler destroys crops and property and calamities follow, including loss of harvests and flocks, affliction, disease, and even sudden death before time to repent. Whoever takes for his own use the portion God reserved proves himself an unfaithful steward and is left to follow his own way and reap its fruit. If His people faithfully obeyed His directions about tithes and offerings the standing promise of protection would be fulfilled to them.

Dishonest, covetous retainers who rob Him lose the promised protection and blessing and remain under condemnation and curse in this life. They cannot be entrusted with larger responsibilities, and their means are not enlarged for further stewardship as the faithful steward's are. Whoever withholds loses not only what he withheld from God but also what was committed to him as his own. Their adversity and calamity from the permitted spoiler is the result of robbing God and hindering His work, not proof that serving Him is useless.

Last-Days Witness and Mission

The chapter has a special application to the last days, and its appeal to return with tithes and offerings and prove God is to be brought home to every soul now. The urgency is that the last years of probation are fast closing and the great day of the Lord is at hand. In that setting the promise that God will hold back the devourer so the produce of the ground is preserved and the vine does not lose its fruit before its time is joined to giving a proportion of substance as a freewill offering to the Lord. The purpose is to arouse God's people to give of their means for sustaining foreign missions, with what is returned to the treasury to be invested in missionary work. Every convert to the truth and every newly raised church is to be taught decidedly to acknowledge dependence on God by returning a certain portion as His own, because all His commands are given to do good and to turn the life from sin to righteousness.

Those who bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there is provision in His house receive blessing beyond room to contain, with the devourer rebuked for their sakes, field crops kept from ruin, and vines kept from casting fruit early. Then all nations call them blessed because their land is delightful, while robbing God in tithes and offerings brings a curse on the whole nation. This protection is part of the reward of faithfulness given to those He can safely bless, making the people and their land a visible witness of His power and blessing before all nations. In that public result is seen the distinction between those who serve Him and those who do not.

Faithful bringing of the full tithe brings God's blessing and supplies means for the work of salvation and the proclaiming of God's truth, with the resources returned to Him used to advance His work. The tithe belongs to God and is to be paid into His treasury for the support of the ministry, not diverted to other kinds of work, and faithful payment would provide means for more ministers and new fields of labor. Withholding or diverting the tithe depletes the treasury and hinders the ministry, and refusal to support the work rejects the means by which blessing may rest on the church.

Study Teaching and Obedience

The whole chapter lays down heaven's plain requirement that all pay tithe because the Lord Himself requires it, teaching that people are subjects of Christ's kingdom. Its terms and claims are clear, calling for faithful tithe-paying so the gospel work can advance and warning that disobedience and dealing falsely bring consequences. Every specification in the word is to be followed out through love and fear of God, and the chapter with its instruction is to be carefully read, studied, and practiced for one's own good and for the sake of others helped by the example. Neglect brings the sure visitation of God, and those whose attention has been called to it who still refuse to comply and disregard it as non-essential will be dealt with in the manner described in the chapter and held accountable in judgment. To neglect is to commit robbery toward God, which cannot be afforded, and withholding what is due brings a curse unless the required work is done for God's approval.

The verse is to be studied carefully, obeyed, and used to teach others how they may receive the blessing of God, since God's people are to be educators. It is to be read to the church together with the promise of opened heaven and the witness of being called blessed, in contrast to the curse for robbing Him, and ministers and workers must give personal labor to teach and warn the people from it so they do not come under the curse. The call to return and prove God by full faithfulness in bringing all the tithe, not one-fourth or one-half, into the storehouse that there may be provision in His house is to be brought home to every soul now, because all commands are given to do good and turn life from sin to righteousness. Every convert to the truth and every newly raised church must be taught decidedly and instructed in it to acknowledge dependence on God by returning a certain portion as His own to the treasury, to be invested in missionary work and support the spreading of truth. When all come into harmonious action in this faithfulness, the salvation of God will be seen.

The warning uplifts a danger signal cautioning against every species of self-indulgence and selfishness, especially withholding from the Lord the portion He claims as His own in tithe. Yielding to selfishness in this matter leaves undone what is required and makes a record that will have to be met. Strict obedience to return to God His own must be impressed by parents upon children, educating them to deny self and worldly pleasures, to pay tithe and to bring offerings however small in order to help advance His work. They are to practice self-denial for the good of others as workers together with God, and thus to become fruitful in good works bearing fruit to His glory, sowing seed that springs up unto eternal life, with parents diligently cutting out the roots of self-indulgence and selfishness in the family and teaching children to work the works of God.

The passage governs pledges and business relations with the Creator, since money passing into human hands remains His and humans are merely stewards and co-laborers with Christ in its use. Withholding gifts and offerings promised to Him is unfaithfulness to the Lord, not merely to other people. Treachery toward the Maker leads to treachery toward fellow men, so all must examine their business relations with Him. Field, orchard, and other fruits of the soil are blessings from Him and are to be faithfully tithed, with all things entrusted to His agents for advancing His work and accountability to walk honestly, bring a faithful tithe to the treasury, and besides this bring gifts and offerings as the cause demands and do their part in carrying out the plan of redemption instead of leaving to Him the work entrusted to them. These words will be met in the judgment as the revelation of the charitable good that might have been done in giving back what He claimed.
