John the Baptist Points Beside the JordanBible World
1:8Mark 1:8
I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.
The saying belongs to the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, spoken by John as he baptized in the wilderness and preached the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. John was clothed with camel's hair with a girdle of skin about his loins and ate locusts and wild honey, and he announced One mightier than he coming after him, whose shoe latchet he was not worthy to stoop down and loose. It stands after the promised messenger preparing the way of the Lord and before Jesus coming from Nazareth of Galilee to be baptized by John in Jordan, with the heavens opened and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him and the voice from heaven declaring Him the beloved Son. It is followed by the Spirit driving Him into the wilderness forty days tempted by Satan with the wild beasts with angels ministering to Him.
The saying distinguishes John's baptism with water from the coming Messiah's baptism with the Holy Spirit, identifying Jesus as the one who gives the Spirit. Water baptism is not sufficient to rest upon, for those who have been baptized with water still need the baptism with the Holy Ghost just as much. John's work of repentance and baptism prepared the way, while Christ as the greater one completes that work through the Spirit. The Spirit's baptism brings power that transforms the whole person and effects the new birth.
God's people are now to be baptized with the Holy Ghost as a present message and duty, needed to do the neglected work for white people everywhere, for cities and villages, and for Black people who must have help. The baptism with the Holy Ghost is received by seeking the Lord with earnestness and decision, and when received believers are taught of God and misunderstanding among them is removed.
