Mark 10:34

And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.

Jesus spoke this prediction on the journey toward Jerusalem as Passover approached. He went forward willingly toward the place of sacrifice, at peace with the Father's will. The disciples following Him were amazed and afraid.

He foretold that He would be mocked and scourged and spat upon and killed, and that He would rise again on the third day. Both Jews and Gentiles would join in bringing about His death. The disciples did not understand the prediction because it conflicted with their hope that He would rule as a temporal prince in Jerusalem. They also did not understand it because they expected God's kingdom to be established soon and were focused on promises of its glory and their own honored places in it.
