Mark 11:22

And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.

Have faith in God means a simple, wholehearted dependence on Him that looks away from self and self-wisdom to the worthiness and mercy of Jesus, drawing strength and nourishment from Him with confident trust in His love, promises and care.
It is a personal trust each must exercise for himself, holding fast at every step even in conscious weakness, and refusing discouragement, fear and complaint in trial by waiting on God as a present help, praising Him with cheerful courage and leaving results with Him.
It reaches out in earnest, persevering prayer that takes hold of His pledged word and does not let go, and then goes right ahead doing its best, talking and acting faith with the mind fixed on God in full dependence.
It trusts Him for healing by asking in simple faith for the great Physician to undertake the case and believing He can save completely, while also resting peaceful and happy in His will whether life is spared or closes.
It frees His workers from anxious fear about His work and its means, calling for strong, active trust that He knows every need, will open the way forward, and will supply what is lacking through His Spirit and His stewards.

Nature of Faith in God

Have faith in God means a simple dependence that does not strain to believe or make believing hard, for trying too hard misses it by looking above it. It does not rest on looking inward to find worthiness in self, and turning attention inward is Satan's deception of honest souls, while unbelief wounds Jesus. It looks away from self to the worthiness of Jesus, throws itself upon His mercy just as unworthy and dependent as it is, and by faith draws strength and nourishment from Him. That faith must be exercised by each person for himself and cannot be exercised by one person for another. For the sick and afflicted this means casting the helpless soul on the merits of a crucified and risen Saviour, while others can only pray for Christ to look upon them.

It calls for wholehearted trust when seeking heavenly things, with assurance that God will not disappoint those who exercise it. That trust puts heart and soul into the effort to receive from heaven, takes the Bible as God's direct voice speaking personally, believes His Word and obeys it, and devotes oneself without reserve to do His will. To everyone who does this God's power is given, while failing to seek in this way brings great loss. It means confident trust in God's love and promises rather than doubting or distrusting Him, laying burdens on the Lord and committing the soul to His keeping in faith. Believing that Christ will take the burdens brought to Him and give His peace brings rest.

It calls for faith in God rather than trust in self or confidence in one's own wisdom, since apart from Christ people can do nothing. This faith includes humble, careful living and continual prayer for God's Spirit to guide the search for direction in Scripture. It accepts the guidance and control of others, avoids the strain of continuous labor, and brings impetuous feelings under higher powers, since uncontrolled feelings may endanger life and bring trouble and accusations against others. It is to be held at every step even while recognizing human weakness, and awareness of weakness must not lead to unbelief but to believing dependence. When self is hidden in Christ and with Christ in God, plans and work are carried out in dependence on God rather than on human strength and disposition.

Trust is grounded in God's character, for He knows all things and is true and patient with His erring children, so they can trust in Him. It rests in the assurance that God does not forsake His people. It remembers that this world is only a pilgrimage being passed through and the future world is the home being traveled to.

Trust Amid Trial and Discouragement

Have faith in God while enduring trials and remaining patient in tribulation, for this faith sustains through trials as believers patiently press toward victory over the powers of darkness. It is trust in the Lord as a present help in every time of need and a constant Helper, so discouragement must never be given in to. When experience is hard to understand, wait on God and hope in Him, confident that He understands people and His work, and fear not but believe and pray and seek to carry out His plans.

Faith is expressed with a cheerful, encouraged heart that praises the Lord for His loving-kindness to men, refuses to look on the dark side, rejoices in the bright prospects of the future, and rests in belonging to Christ, loved by Him as helper and God. It refuses haste to reveal unbelief, keeps a fragrant spirit and pleasant speech instead of disagreeable feelings that cloud the atmosphere, closes the windows earthward and opens the windows heavenward to let the Lord's presence shine in, sings the songs of Zion, and rejoices always because the Lord has helped thus far and in mercy has spared His afflicted, overworked servant. It keeps His praise in the heart from morning till night, speaks not one word of complaint, asks for the healing power of God to come to heart and mind, and remains cheerful and hopeful in praise to the Lord.

The verse calls for courage, good cheer, and trust in God while seeking spiritual refreshment, dwelling on Jesus' character, and undertaking the work God has set before a person. Those who have faith in God will see His salvation, and trusting God brings power to prevail. In the darkest and most forbidding circumstances there is to be no fear but trust in God, for He works out His will and does all things well for His people, renews day by day the strength of those who love and serve Him, and gives them understanding so they can carry out His purposes without error. Trust is to be kept even while feeling far from God despite trying to obey as far as known. Then husband and wife are to unite in seeking the Lord most diligently, keep the meekness and lowliness of Christ, look constantly to Jesus as Author and Finisher of faith, walk humbly with God, refuse to talk discouragement, and continue preparation for the Master's service, and God will bless those who trust this way and make them instruments for a good work.

When carrying a heavy burden over those who disregard light and resist reform, look to the Lord and trust in His power and leave the consequence with Him, telling the soul to trust because God knows just what to do in every emergency even when unable to act. More generally, after doing all that can possibly be done, stop worrying and leave a difficult matter in God's hands, keeping Christlike love for the people involved and believing they will come out all right. Faith must overcome the difficulties, disappointments, and trials that test love and faithfulness. When mistakes lead to defeat, faith can turn those defeats into victories, and the burden borne for Christ and service rendered through surrender of the will to God's will measure love for Him. The verse calls for trust in God while suffering unjust imprisonment for Christ's sake, relying on Jesus with confidence He will not abandon the sufferer, accompanied by prayer and care for the prisoner's family.

It means keeping faith from failing and standing fast by the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, holding the beginning of confidence firm to the end. This includes keeping the seventh-day Sabbath marked by the sun, rejecting the day-line theory as a snare of Satan to confuse minds and discourage, and shining where placed as a living stone in God's building. It calls for having faith in God as hope and crown of rejoicing because the end is very, very near. Therefore prepare in and through the grace of God for the home the Saviour has gone to prepare, be grateful for His goodness, cast all care upon Him who has purchased believers with His blood, refuse to disappoint Him, and hold to being with Him in the mansions He has gone to prepare.

Prayer and Persevering Action

Have faith in God when the work looks impossible, the need is urgent, and there is no money to meet it, kneeling together in earnest prayer instead of giving up. That trust stays hopeful while help is delayed, gives personal means to supply the need, and then gathers again for thanksgiving when God sends provision and His blessing rests on the effort. Faith reaches out to God in prayer, relies on His pledged word, takes hold of His promise and does not let it go, and keeps asking with perseverance rather than becoming discouraged. Such faith is needed for the work to receive the promised blessings and become a decisive victory, for God knows human weakness and suffering and is able to give healing, bodily and mental strength, and help beyond what is asked or expected.

Have faith in God at every step while going right ahead and doing one's best, talking faith and acting faith without letting any discouraging words discourage because God lives and reigns. This faith works by love and purifies the soul, and it must be continually exercised and acted out with the mind fixed on God in full dependence on Him, to strengthen weak faith as urged upon Anna and her family. Trust is to remain firm when others discourage or offend, while living carefully, praying, and committing everything to Jesus. Past errors need not leave a person perplexed or uncertain, because Jesus has taken them and imparted His righteousness.

Looking to Jesus in trust toward God rolls away the gathering mist for workers under God's orders and pledged to do His will, so each sees the saving grace of Christ and God Himself becomes their exceeding great reward. Trust God and lean on the strength of Jesus, with the assurance that no one who trusts in Him is disappointed. Let this faith accompany faithfulness in every act, for even when people do not appreciate one's work, God sees the motive and gives credit justly.

Faith for Healing and Health

Have faith in God calls ministers to put trust in God for healing, to ask Him in simple faith to undertake their case and to believe His power can heal, for to regard illness as beyond His power dishonors Him. He is the greatest physician and can save completely, so the sick are to entrust their whole being to Him for healing and restoration, to seek Him with earnest faith, and to believe He desires their healing rather than depending on another person's faith.

When facing serious disease, having faith in God means trusting Him and asking in faith for oneself for healing while others pray and keep the case before the Lord. The desire is that life be spared and the course of disease be stayed by the great Physician so the sick may be made well, if in accordance with His holy will and for His glory, while being peaceful and happy even if life closes. In time of sickness, suffering, care, and wearing responsibility, it means praying and believing, trusting God to spare life, restore health, grant more time to live and work, and draw near and bless abundantly. Through such suffering is learned wisdom about preserving entrusted health and not bearing too many burdens.

Faith means grasping God's merciful and gracious promises with simple, unwavering faith, as with the hand of faith, for restoration of eyesight and bodily infirmities, for health of every faculty of thought, and for a cleansed, refined, purified heart receiving the rich grace of heavenly attributes. Christ never fails to exercise His healing power when asked, and head and eyes are to be put under the Divine Physician's healing power. This does not permit becoming imprudent and walking carelessly because there is a Great Physician who can heal all manner of diseases, but requires exercising all God-given powers to be right and to do right and to preserve the physical house lived in. It also means trusting God for power to live, to brace up and not faint, and to hold to health reform without being turned aside. Such trust enables the will to bring appetite into subjection to true purpose and to discard flesh meat at once and not by degrees, with a firm, determined purpose to do right.

Provision for God's Work

Have faith in God brings perfect trust that frees workers from anxious fear about the outcome of the work, for God is in control of His work and will bring it to completion when people faithfully do their part without interfering with His direction. Amid unfavorable circumstances His people are to have much more faith, for the Lord knows their needs and supplies what they lack through the Holy Spirit. Putting trust in God with assurance that He will do great things requires increased faith joined to the moment-by-moment guidance of the Spirit so that His power is revealed, enabling Him to work precious victories and bring a difficult matter to His glory. The verse calls for strong, active trust that sustains the work with confidence that God will provide needed means and keep the way open. Believers are to stop wrestling anxiously to secure means and trust God to provide them because He Himself will open the way forward, resting on His goodness and enduring mercy.

Have faith in God means trusting Him to supply means for urgent gospel work when local believers cannot raise it themselves, assuring faithful laborers in a needy field that He will provide through brethren elsewhere who have a surplus and are moved by love for neighbor to share, so that the five thousand dollars required to secure a house of worship in Nashville would be carried from the General Conference meeting. God is to be trusted with faith that is not confined by narrow ideas or plans, for faith in God leads to enlarged, liberal action. The verse means keeping up good heart and refusing discouragement about the sanitarium work in Nashville, trusting God that the work will advance despite prejudice and opposition. It calls for faith to keep the school at Battle Creek open rather than close it and sell the buildings and give the appearance of forced defeat. That trust means believing God gave the plan of giving Christ's Object Lessons for relief of the schools and carrying that work forward without flinching in the Lord's name.

Such faith meets God's test of His people and institutions to work together in one mind in self-denial and self-sacrifice, vindicates God's plan, unites church members in self-sacrificing effort, and sanctifies them soul, body, and spirit as vessels unto honor to receive the Holy Spirit and accomplish what God designs, while selling at this time would defeat God's purpose and hinder answered prayer and the work He intends. The verse is applied to trusting God's power to provide for His threatened institutions, including those in Europe, by believing He has put a store of treasure sufficient to heal every disease of those institutions into the hands of His stewards. United efforts in tender sympathy and loving helpfulness can move stewards to use their resources to restore them from disaster to health and prosperity. It means trusting God while carrying out His purpose for schools and making the most of His providences, continuing in harmonious action without becoming weary in well doing. After doing all that can be done with sanctified energy and much prayer, that trust leads to seeing the glory of God and a blessed result when the trial has been fully made.

Workers who labor and teach sacred truth are to have confidence in God, learn from Christ, keep Him central when presenting Scripture, and focus on a few vital points connected with the text rather than wandering into unrelated matters. Those who minister to the sick in body and soul are to trust God so they have the presence of Jesus, seek the Lord with all the heart, receive words to speak as a message from heaven, receive the water of life from Christ when thirsty, have Christ in them as a well springing up to eternal life, speak words full of truth and grace, introduce the saving grace of Christ, and bring blessing and salvation of souls to those for whom they work. The verse means receiving God's precious words just as they read without covering them with human suppositions, comprehending them as one's own, and trusting God with conviction that Jesus is working with His real disciples according to His promise so the Lord will manifest Himself to all who labor with Him. Holding fast to that promise requires whole consecration to God in clearing the King's highway, as for the workers in Nashville. Trusting God by holding fast to power that never fails keeps workers from wearing themselves out with long, intense discourses and keeps them ready to speak timely words more often. It means trusting God enough to keep moving forward against difficulties and opposing counsel to secure a providential opportunity, even when the investment is hard, requires borrowing money, and delays other building, with confidence strengthened by past experience of pressing through such obstacles.
