He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.
Jesus met the Sadducees who denied the resurrection and rejected future rewards and punishments when they tried to entangle Him with the case of seven brothers married in turn to one wife in order to heap ridicule on that part of the law and bring all the Mosaic institutions into contempt. His answer rested on what God spoke to Moses in the bush, that He is the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. He is God of living people, not dead people, and therefore the dead will rise.
The patriarchs and all who die in faith live to Him and will be raised by the Son of God to immortal life. The resurrection proved is literal resurrection of the identical body: the patriarchs are not left dead but will live again, and the precious dead from Abel down to the last saint who dies will hear the voice of the Son of God and will come forth from their graves and live again. God sees His promised purpose as already accomplished, so the future bond between Him and the risen saints is certain. God will be their God and they will be His people in a close and tender relationship between God and His resurrected saints according to the divine plan.
Denying the resurrection and future life is a great error arising from failing to understand Scripture and the power of God. Those in error build on a false foundation, while a right understanding of the Scriptures is the fountain of pure heavenly knowledge. If there is no resurrection, the Scriptures professed to be believed are of no use.
Christ answered attempts to entangle Him plainly and intelligently, bringing precious light to the people and sowing seeds of truth. The warnings He gave belong to every age: those who refuse to receive Him as Redeemer face the doom foreshadowed by the warnings unless they repent. The truth that God is the God of the living supports using resources to help the hungry, starving, and dying rather than spending large sums on monuments to the dead.
