Mark 12:35

And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?

In the temple Jesus turned to the Pharisees gathered closely around Him and asked how the scribes say that Christ is the Son of David. The question tested whether they regarded Him simply as a man and human descendant of David or as the divine Son of God, testing their faith in His divinity. Their united answer that He is David's son gave the title prophecy gave to the Messiah. That same title had been used when His mighty miracles in healing the sick and raising the dead revealed His divinity, when the Syrophoenician woman, blind Bartimaeus and others cried to Him for mercy, and when the crowd hailed Him riding into Jerusalem only hours before.

Jesus met that answer with David's Spirit-inspired words that call the Messiah Lord and picture Him enthroned at God's right hand, pressing how David's son can also be David's Lord. The contrast shows the Messiah is both David's son and David's Lord, exposing His divine status. No one was able to answer Him, so none dared question Him further. The question belongs to His warnings against rejecting the Son of God, a warning that applies in every age to those who refuse to receive Him as Redeemer.
