Families Flee Into the Mountainsby ScottReinhard

Mark 13:17

But woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

The saying belongs to the answer given on the Mount of Olives to the question of when these things would happen and what would be the sign of their fulfillment. That discourse sets forth together the destruction of Jerusalem and the final events of earth's history, so the woe applies to both crises. When the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel stands where it ought not, those in Judea are to flee at once to the mountains, without going down into the house and without turning back from the field for clothing. The woe marks how hard such urgent flight must be for women who are with child and for women nursing infants, and prayer is urged that the flight not happen in winter, because those days will bring affliction such as has not occurred from the beginning of creation until then. As teaching about the signs and timing of coming events, the same discourse warns that cities full of sin will face destruction by earthquake, fire, and flood.
