Jesus Holds the Cup at the Passover MealBible World
14:19Mark 14:19
And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?
The announcement that one of their own number would betray him filled the disciples with sorrow. Each one examined his own heart and asked whether he himself was the betrayer. Their one-by-one questioning, Is it I, expressed fear and painful self-distrust. That self-distrust was felt even though they were close to Jesus and had received His love and teaching.
Judas alone at first remained silent, and then asked the same question as the others in order to conceal his guilt and to escape the scrutiny of the others. The question Is it I calls every person, when faced with warning or reproof, to examine himself and to take it personally. It is not to be assumed to apply to someone else, nor to be dismissed. Heeding God's instruction would have prevented the troubled condition that made such self-examination necessary.
