Jesus and the Disciples Walk Toward Gethsemane by Moonlightby emmanuel_higgins

Mark 14:28

But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.

Before his death Jesus promised his disciples that after he was risen he would go ahead of them into Galilee to meet them. He spoke this promise to the disciples in the upper chamber. It followed his warning that they would be scattered when the Shepherd was struck and he was arrested. By it he assured them that their scattering and failure would not end their relationship and fellowship with him, but that his death would not be the end and their scattering would be followed by his resurrection and reunion with them. The disciples did not fully understand the words at the time; they became clear after the resurrection.

The promise directed them where to meet him after the resurrection and after the Passover, and after Passover week they went to Galilee as he had directed. The same promise was repeated on resurrection morning by the angel at the tomb to the women and to several disciples, directing them to tell the disciples and Peter that they would see him in Galilee as he had said. The meeting in Galilee was delayed because the disciples had to remain in Jerusalem through Passover week, since leaving would have been taken as disaffection and heresy, and during that time they gathered evenings in the upper chamber where Jesus appeared to them twice and told them to stay in Jerusalem for a time.

Jesus himself chose a place on the mountainside for the meeting because it could hold a large company. The appointed meeting was for a large company of believers including the eleven and all the assembled brethren. It was of the utmost importance to the church that would soon have to carry on the work without his personal presence, for Jesus designed there to manifest himself as risen so that all doubt and unbelief would be swept away and the church would be prepared to continue.
