Mark 15:28

And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

The crucifixion fulfilled the Scripture foretelling that he would be counted among transgressors. That fulfillment is recorded at the start of the crowd's journey from the judgment hall to Calvary, with no further explanation added to it. He was numbered with transgressors by being executed at the same time and in the same manner as two criminals, sharing death between two other men. As he passed the gate of Pilate's court, the cross prepared for Barabbas was laid on his bruised and bleeding shoulders, while crosses were also placed on the two men who were to die with him, who were companions of Barabbas.

He was treated as a criminal in suffering outside Jerusalem at the place where felons and murderers were executed. Though innocent, he was counted among criminals and died as a malefactor. Before being lifted up on the cross, he was given into the hands of wicked men, rejected when his own nation clamored for his blood and chose the murderous Barabbas in his place, mocked with the crown of thorns, the purple robe and the reed, and scourged as the worst of criminals. His disciples had centered their hopes of eternal life in him and thought he would take his place on David's throne.

As humanity's substitute, he bore the penalty and curse of the law for transgression and humanity's sin. His death paid the just claims of God's law and provided the means to ransom his people and finally defeat sin and Satan. This humiliation is the taking away of the Bridegroom, bringing days of trial and temptation when the presence of the Comforter is not clearly discerned. It gives cause to mourn and fast, trying faith and causing hope and courage to fail.
