Women at the Empty Tomb Hear the AngelBible World

Mark 16:2

And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.

Very early on the first day of the week after the Sabbath had passed, at the rising of the sun or around sunrise, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Salome with certain other women came to the sepulchre bringing sweet spices to anoint and embalm the body, though it is also held that they came before it was light. They had watched Him die and kept the Sabbath according to the commandment, then came with their hope gone out in darkness and with no thought or expectation that He would rise, having forgotten His promise that He would see them again. As they wondered who would roll away the stone they found amid trembling of the earth and bright light about the tomb that the very great stone was already rolled away, the Roman guard gone, and the tomb empty when they looked inside. Entering affrighted, they saw angels in white who told them that Jesus of Nazareth who was crucified is risen and is not there, showed them where He had lain, and sent them to tell His disciples and Peter that He goes before them into Galilee, yet the news at first seemed as idle tales and was not believed. That first day is the day of His resurrection when He rose no longer in the grave as a mighty conqueror, but the verse does not call it the Sabbath or the Lord's day and gives no instruction to keep it as a weekly holy day.

Visit to the Sepulchre

Mark 16:2 places the visit very early on the first day of the week, after the Sabbath had passed and ended, at the rising of the sun or around sunrise. Those who held it also describe it as occurring before it was light. The visit waited through the Sabbath because the Sabbath was nigh at hand, and those who came kept the Sabbath according to the commandment.

Those who came were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Salome, described as the three Marys and as the Marys with certain other women. They had watched Christ die and had stood by the cross, then waited for the hours of the Sabbath to pass before rising very early on the first day to make their way to the tomb. They brought sweet and precious spices they had prepared the day before the Sabbath to anoint and embalm the body and to continue that work of embalming.

They went with no thought or expectation of Christ rising from the dead, having forgotten His promise, I will see you again. The sun of their hope had gone out in darkness and night had settled on their hearts as they walked recounting His works of mercy and words of comfort. As they approached they wondered who would roll away the stone.

As they neared the garden the earth trembled beneath their feet and the heavens were brightly and beautifully lighted with a light shining about the tomb. Hastening to the sepulchre they found the very great stone already rolled away from the door, the Roman guard gone, and the tomb empty when they looked inside. Entering, they were affrighted to see a young man sitting on the right side clothed in a long white garment. Angels told them that Jesus of Nazareth who was crucified is risen and is not there, showed them the place where He lay, and sent them to tell His disciples and Peter that He goes before them into Galilee where they will see Him as He said to them.

The resurrection news at first seemed to the apostles as idle tales and they believed not. The women themselves could not at first believe it though the resurrection was a fact.

Meaning of the Day

The first day of the week is the day of His resurrection. Early on that morning, around sunrise, the women came to anoint Jesus at the tomb while He was no longer in the grave. His life came from heaven, and He rose as a mighty conqueror. The resurrection was a fact even though the women could not at first believe the news.

The verse names the day but does not call it the Sabbath, the Lord's day, or a sacred day. It gives no instruction to observe it as a weekly holy day. In Luther's German Bible the wording for first day of the week in this verse and similar passages is rendered erroneously as Sabbath. Readers accustomed to that wording resisted correcting it. The three Marys came early on the morning of the first day of the week with sweet spices to anoint the body of Jesus, and found the tomb empty. This means Jesus received no other anointing besides Mary's anointing before His death, for the Sabbath was nigh at hand and they kept the Sabbath according to the commandment.
