Women at the Empty Tomb Hear the AngelBible World

Mark 16:3

And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?

The question was asked by Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome, also called the three Marys, as they came very early on the morning of the first day of the week at the rising of the sun, after the Sabbath was past, which they had kept according to the commandment. They brought sweet spices prepared before the Sabbath to anoint Jesus and to finish His embalming, since the anointing by Mary at Bethany was the only anointing He would receive, the Sabbath being near at hand. As they went, ignorant of what had happened, they asked among themselves who would roll away the very great, heavy stone from the door of the sepulchre, knowing they could not remove it themselves, yet they kept pressing forward on their way.

As they neared the garden the heavens were beautifully lighted and the earth trembled beneath them, and they hurried to the sepulchre expecting the stone to be closed. When they looked on arrival, the stone had already been rolled away from the door before they entered, the Roman guard was gone, and when they looked inside the tomb was empty and the body was gone. The stone was rolled away by a mighty angel with ease, whose face was as lightning and with light shining about the tomb, who announced to them that Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified, had risen as He said and sent them quickly to tell His disciples.

At first they could not believe the resurrection was a fact, and they feared that His enemies had taken His body away. Jesus rose from the grave by life from heaven and came forth as conqueror over death and the grave, which shows that He is the living Saviour with power over death.
