Women at the Empty Tomb Seen from InsideBible World

Mark 16:4

And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.

After the Sabbath was past, very early on the first day of the week at sunrise, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Salome, the three Marys, came bringing sweet spices to anoint the body of Jesus. As they came they said among themselves who would roll away the stone from the door of the sepulchre. They had kept the Sabbath according to the commandment, so the earlier pouring of ointment on Jesus was the only anointing He had received, with no further anointing before this resurrection-morning visit.

When they looked, they found the stone already rolled away from the door, though it was very great, large, heavy and immense. The tomb and grave were empty with the body of Jesus gone, and the Roman guard was gone. Seeing the tomb open and the body gone, the women feared His enemies had taken Him. They were told by angels that Jesus of Nazareth who was crucified had risen, were shown where He had lain, and were told He would go before the disciples into Galilee.

The Roman guards also, as the glory of the angelic messenger faded, raised their heads to find the very great stone already removed and the tomb empty with the body gone. They hastened to the city with the news that the crucified Christ was risen, which reached the disciples with mingled hope and fear and was announced to the priests and rulers, leaving the priests pale with horror that prophecy concerning Messiah was being fulfilled. The stone was rolled back by a mighty angel from heaven with face bright like lightning and garments white as snow, who laid hold of the immense stone and moved it with ease as easily as a pebble while the earth shook and trembled and the guards were stricken powerless.

As the tomb was opened Christ, whose life came from heaven, walked out of the grave as a mighty Conqueror in triumph, with a form of great glory emerging and a chorus of voices filling heaven and earth with songs of victory and joy until the light faded and the music ceased. His resurrection shows that He was not left in the grave and that He is a living Saviour.
