Scenes From Mark 7 Blended TogetherBible World

Mark 7:35

And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.

After withdrawal from Capernaum following the encounter with the Pharisees, the journey crossed Galilee to the hill country on the borders of Phenicia overlooking Tyre and Sidon with their heathen temples, palaces, markets, shipping harbors, and the Mediterranean beyond over which the gospel would later go to the centers of the world empire, though that time had not yet come. The coming to this region was in hope of finding the retirement not secured at Bethsaida, to prepare the disciples for their mission, and for a further purpose beyond retirement. The healing happened on the way from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon to the Sea of Galilee through the midst of Decapolis, on the return to Decapolis.

The verse belongs in an old Canaanite, idolatrous, heathen district despised by the Jews, where the work of healing all manner of diseases for rich or poor had become known. Even one excluded from the advantages enjoyed daily by the Jews, who had sought help from heathen gods without relief, took hope and resolved not to lose her only hope, as seen when the Canaanite woman from those borders came for her daughter grievously vexed with a devil. It also belongs to the return to Decapolis when people flocked to hear the message of salvation, a response connected with the witness of the men who had been healed and remained in the region telling others of divine power.

People brought a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech and stammered, and asked for the laying on of the hand upon him. Jesus took the man aside from the multitude, put fingers in his ears, spit and touched his tongue, looked up to heaven, sighed, and commanded with the word meaning be opened that the closed faculties be opened. Straightway the result followed the touch and command: hearing was restored, the tongue was freed from its binding, and the man spoke clearly and plainly.

Jesus charged the witnesses to tell no one, but the man spread the news of his cure despite the charge, and the more the charge was given the more the witnesses published it. They were astonished beyond measure and declared that everything is done well by making the deaf to hear and the mute to speak. The healing reveals compassion and greatness and stands as an example of the great works performed, and as an example of the work the disciples should do in making the deaf to hear. The verse shows that the Lord can loose a stammering tongue when He calls a man to serve as elder. A man who stuttered and could not talk, read, or pray can ask the Lord to loose his tongue on a set day, and after longing and prayer be enabled to call friends together and talk freely, exhort others to have faith that the Lord will help, create great excitement for the truth, and keep talking continually in confidence that the healing will remain.
