Mark 8:17
And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened? And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened?
The rebuke was for still failing to understand the power to provide after having already seen a multitude fed, for anxiety over having no bread exposed unbelief and a failure to trust. That same unbelief was entangled with prejudice against the Gentiles, which kept them from offering what little they had in confidence that it could be multiplied.
The lack of perception and understanding continued when attention was directed beyond present poverty and humiliation to the coming in glory. That coming would not be with an earthly throne but with the glory of God and the heavenly hosts to reward every person according to his works, with the promise that some standing there would not taste death until they saw the Son of man coming in His kingdom. That glory seemed far away because eyes were fixed on the nearer view of earthly life in poverty, humiliation, and suffering and on the glowing expectation that the Messiah would be exalted to the throne of David. Sadness oppressed their hearts because they loved their Master, while doubt harassed their minds because it seemed incomprehensible that the Son of God as a humble homeless wanderer should be despised, rejected, and put to death. They questioned why He should voluntarily go to Jerusalem to meet such treatment and resign Himself to such a fate and leave them in greater darkness than that in which they were groping before He revealed Himself to them.
