Mark 9:50

Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.

Like salt, goodness is good and valuable only while it retains its distinctive quality and savor. To have salt in oneself is to have a living, Christlike inward influence, which means receiving Christ's righteousness, grace, and Spirit and keeping that quality alive within. As salt was added to every sacrifice, so Christ's righteousness makes a life offered to God acceptable. Those who receive this salt become the salt of the earth and are made fit for service, and through a life used by the Holy Spirit they spread the light of truth, awaken those who are spiritually dead, restrain evil, and exert a saving, life-giving influence that blesses others.

Salt that has lost its savor is dead, saltless religion and mere profession of godliness, bearing the Christian name without Christlike qualities, without Christ's love, and without living faith in Christ, genuine love, consecration, and the Spirit's transforming work; it has no life-giving influence and no power for good, cannot bless the world, and leaves a person unfit for service. Failure to show Christ's grace in this way misrepresents God and makes the professed truth appear powerless. Receiving Christ's grace removes rivalry and self-seeking, so those who have salt in themselves live at peace with one another.
