But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
Christ spoke these words to Capernaum, with Chorazin and Bethsaida, as witness against the cities where most of His mighty works were done. Capernaum was lifted toward heaven by privilege and light through His presence and works among its people, yet for not repenting and not profiting by His ministry it shall be brought down to hell, while if those mighty works had been done in Sodom it would have repented and would have remained unto this day. Therefore in the day of judgment it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom than for Capernaum. Judgment is measured by the light, blessings, privileges, and opportunities people have received, so greater light seen and rejected brings greater accountability and a more severe, less tolerable condemnation than that of Sodom. Its guilt was not lack of light but hearing Christ without doing what He taught, neglecting heaven-sent opportunities, resisting clear evidence until conviction did not lead to repentance, and the same warning rests on highly favored churches and professed believers today who know the truth yet remain untransformed in character and life.
Capernaum and Sodom Contrast
The words were spoken to Capernaum, with Chorazin and Bethsaida, as witness against the cities wherein most of the mighty works were done. Their exposure to powerful signs brought conviction but not repentance, for by resisting the heavenly appeal and refusing to yield they made themselves more accountable than Sodom. They received great light, privileges, and blessings in the presence of Jesus but did not value or accept what He gave, and their light did not make them better, so rejecting it brought ruin.
Capernaum was exalted unto heaven by privilege and light through the presence of Christ and the mighty works done among its people. Yet because it repented not after those works and did not profit by His ministry, it shall be brought down to hell. Its people would listen to Christ but would not carry out what He taught, did not work out principles of righteousness, and would not unite with Him in the work, because pride of disposition and defects of character stood in the way. If the mighty works done in Capernaum had been done in Sodom, Sodom would have repented and would have remained unto this day. Greater exposure to God's works brings greater accountability, and the judgment of a people is measured by the light and knowledge received, so that nations left in darkness might have advanced further than those given Capernaum's advantages who failed to respond.
It is therefore declared that in the day of judgment it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom than for Capernaum. Sodom, though wicked, will fare better than Capernaum which saw the mighty works and rejected the heavenly gift, for greater light and opportunity bring greater responsibility and those who receive them but do not respond face a more severe judgment. Even those who saw great works and heard preaching but rejected the light received will face greater punishment than Sodom and Gomorrah judged for their sins.
The denunciation is not mere human reproof to be ignored but a heaven-sent warning falling from the lips of Christ, sternly rebuking indifference and determination to continue in a sinful way. It is refused on the excuse that it is only man rebuking and that the divine and the human are commingled, as priests and rulers said He hath a devil and is only a human being. Though He spoke in human nature with divinity and humanity united, the warning is not to be dismissed as human.
This warning stands joined to thanks that the Father hid these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them unto babes. It stands joined also to the gracious invitation to come unto Christ to find rest unto souls by taking His easy yoke and learning His meek and lowly heart, in which there is hope for those who will heed it. The verse belongs to Matthew 11:16-27, which warns that those favored with great light, precious opportunities, and wonderful privileges are accountable for responding when spiritual growth does not match blessings and knowledge received. When preached it bears pointed application that strikes the heart and brings confession and a broken, humble response.
Judgment Measured by Light
In the day of judgment all are judged according to the light of truth they have had, the blessings and privileges and opportunities granted them, and the wickedness they have committed, with punishment given in accordance with their sin and with how they used what they received. It will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom than for those who saw mighty works and received great light and many evidences about present truth yet did not repent and appreciate the light, whose spiritual growth and advancement was not in accordance with that light. Merely accepting or knowing the truth heard repeatedly is not enough, for it must be used to become better and to overcome sin. The words are plain and decided and apply to all places so highly favored where the people do not appreciate painstaking efforts to bring them into conformity to the principles given for the guidance of believers in all times and especially at the present time, principles requiring unity and obedience to God's requirements so that by unity and obedience believers bear a powerful witness as a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men. On that day every case will be reviewed before God, when those judged will see their shame but the record cannot then be changed.
Greater light rejected brings greater accountability, so those who saw great light and many evidences and did not repent, appreciate, benefit, or advance accordingly face a more severe, less tolerable judgment than Sodom. Capernaum received greater evidence through mighty works and did not repent, and therefore its condemnation is greater than that of Sodom. Cities and souls that reject the truth despite receiving great light and opportunities reject the power of the Holy Spirit, and their privilege makes their refusal more serious, whether by failing to proclaim truth faithfully or by working against God's purposes. Those abundantly blessed and warned yet remaining stubborn and unchanged, who fail to walk in the light received, fall under the condemnation pronounced on Chorazin and Bethsaida, for greater opportunity brings greater responsibility.
Rejecting the gospel call to repentance, the solemn message of mercy, and the salvation and mercy offered after seeing the Son of God and hearing His teaching is a greater sin than the iniquity for which Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed. Those who received great light and privileges but neglected to follow that light and give their hearts fully to God, remaining unmoved to repentance and turning from Christ's example, bear greater guilt than Sodom. Those who profess to know God and keep His commandments while denying Christ in character and daily life bear still greater guilt, for Sodom's fate warns not only against open sin but also against trifling with heaven-sent light and privileges. God will surely punish the sinner, while the righteous will receive eternal life, and the destiny of peoples and nations is in His hands.
Rejecting given light leaves people less able to receive further truth, as those who rejected John's message were led on to reject and crucify Jesus. By that rejection they missed the blessing of Pentecost, which would have shown them that Jesus' sacrifice had been accepted and that He ministered for them in the heavenly sanctuary. The torn temple veil showed that the earthly sacrifices and ordinances were no longer accepted, and clinging to them left the people in darkness and unable to benefit from Christ's mediation.
On the day of judgment every case will be reviewed before God and judged according to the things written in the books, when the judged will see their shame but the record cannot then be changed, and the one who goes on in transgression adding sin to sin will meet that opening of the books. Those who hear the gospel and remain impenitent will be judged according to the light they received and failed to use. The people of Sodom, whose sins were grievous but who had less light, will stand as witnesses against them.
Guilt is measured also by the character of the messenger God sends, so the more earnest and faithful and praiseworthy the minister, the more blameworthy the people if they do not heed his message but go on in their own way.
God keeps account of nations, and guilt is measured in proportion to light and mercy rejected. A people richly blessed with knowledge of the Christian faith and other mercies faces a fearful record when it forgets God. Making void God's law would fill up the measure of that nation's iniquity.
The advantages of this age are far greater than those of peoples that have been an astonishment and reproach. Had those nations been privileged with the light that now shines, they would have repented and remained unto this day, as Sodom would have remained had it seen Capernaum's heaven-sent light and mighty works. Everyone will be judged by the light and privileges of the gospel, so the warnings and reproofs of the Word apply fearfully to the people of these last days.
Nature of Capernaum's Guilt
Capernaum's guilt was to listen to Christ yet not carry out what He taught, not to work out the principles of righteousness, and not to unite with Him in the work, because pride of disposition and defects of character stood in the way. Its guilt was not lack of light but neglect of heaven-sent opportunities to learn the saving truth, though the towns around Galilee had received abundant blessings and seen His ministry. Chorazin and Bethsaida witnessed His miracles yet refused the evidence of truth, resisting the heavenly appeal and refusing to yield to God, so that conviction did not lead to repentance and made them more accountable than Sodom.
Its guilt included stern indifference and determination to continue in a sinful way and to follow a sinful course while refusing to heed warnings sent by God, under rebuke of a heaven-sent warning falling from the lips of Christ that was not merely human reproof to be dismissed. It excused refusal on the ground that it is only man rebuking and that the divine and the human are commingled, though He spoke in human nature with divinity and humanity united. The same guilt appears in those who see evidences of truth yet refuse to walk in its light because obedience would cost opinions, business, or other temporal advantage. They set aside conviction and reject the plain Thus saith the Lord, turn from truth unto fables, and misapply and misinterpret the Scriptures to make them appear to sustain error. They reject Him after clear evidence of who He is because religious leaders distort Scripture to fit traditions and the people rely on those leaders instead of searching the Scriptures for themselves.
It includes treating sacred instruction from Christ as common and not cherishing it, though Sodom and Gomorrah would have repented if they had received it. Chorazin and Bethsaida received great light, privileges, and blessings in His presence but did not value or accept what He gave, and their light did not make them better, so rejecting it brought ruin. Having the Bible and the light God sends does not itself transform, and hearing without living faith and without change for the better brought the terrible woe upon cities given many mighty works and every opportunity. Those who resist truth, cling to self-indulgence, and contend over their own ideas can become spiritually blind and lose opportunities to receive truth unto eternal life.
Warning to Privileged Churches
The warning falls on churches now, for whether they receive or reject the message and the messenger sent by God decides their eternal future. It falls on every highly favored place that fails to appreciate painstaking efforts to bring it into conformity with the principles given for believers in all times and especially now, principles of unity and obedience by which believers bear a powerful witness to the world, to angels, and to men. Those who have seen mighty works and received great light and many evidences of present truth yet have not repented nor appreciated the light will find the day of judgment more tolerable for the land of Sodom than for themselves.
The words belong to Battle Creek, where the needed moral transformation has not gone on and the need of righteousness and justice has not been realized. There wrong principles have been perpetuated in the face of the clearest light, and injustice and wrong judgment have been covered so long that God is wearied. Christ repeatedly brought blessings there and offered pardon and righteousness, giving evidence of His love at least as great as that given to the cities that rejected Him. The same warnings given to Bethsaida and Capernaum rest on those who suppose they are safe in obtaining their education in Battle Creek after two of the largest institutions there were blotted out. Punishment in that day is according to wickedness and according to the light of truth received, so places where truth has long been known face heavier punishment, and building up great institutions in such a place risks coming under that heavier condemnation. Sodom would have remained unto this day if it had seen the mighty works done in Capernaum, which was exalted unto heaven by privilege and light yet for rejecting that light shall be brought down to hell.
The verse warns those in the Colorado Conference and all who know the truth yet pursue a course of intriguing under Satan that they need reconversion. Those who cling to hereditary and cultivated tendencies need the converting power of God before they can be a blessing to others, for without daily conversion they will have continual warfare with self. They must fall upon the Rock and be broken, ceasing to plead for their own way as if it were always right, and there is hope for them if they heed the gracious invitation to come and find rest unto their souls.
It applies to churches that know the truth and have had great labor bestowed on them yet remain selfish and exacting and covetous and refuse to become doers of the Word. Like Chorazin and Bethsaida rejecting light, great opportunities, and great privileges, their case in the day of judgment will be less tolerable than that of Sodom, and greater privileges they will never have. It applies to church members who continue in indulgence, spending talents and means on disgusting defiling things put into the mouth instead of using that means to work the cities and to work in the highways and byways. It warns of cities where truth has been made known yet is misrepresented by the character and spirit of professors, bringing wrath upon them.
It applies to people with good homes but no Christ in them, hardened and backslidden through neglect of piety at home and neglect of parental duty, standing under Capernaum's guilt with declension and dissension as its fruit. Their works do not correspond with their faith though truth has shone in bright beams to their understanding and God has wrought wondrously for them, and nominal Christianity is the evil they have most to fear and dread. The denunciation rests on false guides and professed believers who have outgrown advent faith and deny a speedy appearing in spirit, works, and words. They say in their hearts that the Lord delays His coming, cry peace and safety and the time is not yet, live for the world, and smite fellow servants, and their judgment will be less tolerable than Sodom's.
Professed Christians who know Christian light yet enslave and cruelly oppress those made in God's image face judgment more severe than heathen and papists. The suffering of the oppressed is recorded in heaven and brings God's anger upon the oppressors. Those who imitate worldly practices despite profession will perish with the world, for Sodom would have repented if it had received the light now shining. The woe to Chorazin and Bethsaida applies to a world in this day given up to pursuit of temporal affairs as men were in the days of Noah, eating, drinking, planting, building, marrying and giving in marriage, things lawful in themselves but sinful when carried to excess and coming short of responsibilities.
Greater light and opportunity bring greater responsibility, so those who do not value heaven's light, walk in it, help others understand truth, and share it face greater accountability. Capernaum had Jesus among its people yet did not walk in the light nor help others understand it, and rejecting divine warnings brings judgment more severe than Sodom's. Had the cities accepted the message, repented, and carried the truth to others, many more would have been converted, but rejecting great light and clear evidence and manifestations of power forfeits that wider good. Unrepentant sinners who received greater light and held higher positions face greater punishment, for disloyalty after great light increases accountability.
Call to Repentance and Holiness
In the day of judgment it will be more bearable for Sodom than for people who have the truth yet keep a selfish, carnal life. God is present with His people in all their assemblies and knows all their decisions and plans, and He has no use for a spiritual profession that is not brought into all that is done. The truth must sanctify body, soul, and spirit, and to hold a spiritual creed with a selfish life is the same deception that rested on Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum and brings the heavier condemnation pronounced upon them.
Merely accepting or knowing the truth is not enough, for guilt and judgment are measured according to the light received, and Sodom will fare better than those who received greater light and did not respond to it. Those who hear truth repeatedly must use it to become better and overcome sin, and those who know the truth but do not live by it face greater condemnation than Sodom. Belief in the truth is not enough unless its sanctifying power appears in life and character, and people who receive light but do not appreciate and obey it will face greater accountability, as Chorazin and Bethsaida show. Knowing the truth, professing it, giving mere nominal assent to it, and even holding up the standard of God's Word to teach sound doctrine to others will not save teacher or listener. Unless sound words are backed by daily practice in right actions and the pure principles of truth are interwoven in the life to purify the heart, elevate the character, and produce holiness, mercy, truth, purity and love of God, the teacher is left in the condition of Chorazin and Bethsaida, more guilty than Sodom, with great light without a pure heart, willing mind and God-fearing life leaving ministry and churches under moral defilement and heavier condemnation.
To be exalted to heaven as Capernaum was is to handle sacred things and to receive exalted privileges of light and grace. Knowledge and exalted privileges do not elevate moral value with God, for what counts is what a person is in heart and principle in His sight, whether he works the works of God and is Christlike. Light and grace give no benefit unless brought into life and character, and one so privileged who does not live it stands under heavier condemnation in the day of judgment. Judgment will be more tolerable for Sodom than for people who bear Christ's name but dishonor Him through unconsecrated lives, who neglect His mercies and blessings, abuse their opportunities, and slight His warnings, facing greater retribution than Sodom and Gomorrah which were judged for their sins. People who possess sacred, testing truth but dishonor it through their habits and practices are guilty in proportion to the light they have received, and their judgment is less tolerable than that of the heathen.
Those exalted to heaven like Capernaum with clear light of truth shining upon them, with mighty works and knowledge and grace wrought for them, cannot plead lack of light and cannot expect judgment in their favor if they turn from the holy commandments delivered to them. Sodom and Gomorrah and nations in darkness did not receive that heavenly light, and might have remained and advanced far if they had, so it will be more tolerable for them than for those who had superior advantages and refused to learn meekness and obedience. Every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God demands earnest attention and there can be no sinless departure from the words of Christ. The Saviour urges the erring to repent, and those who humble their hearts and confess their sins will be pardoned and forgiven, but the one who will not confess lest he show weakness will not find pardon nor see Christ as Redeemer, but will go on in transgression adding sin to sin until the day the books are opened when every man is judged according to the things written in the books.
In the day of judgment it will be more tolerable for the cities of the plain than for those who have known the love of Christ and yet have turned away to choose the pleasures of a world of sin. This is the end of the one who persistently refuses to heed His pitying, tender call to return and slights mercy until the heart becomes hardened in sin and no longer susceptible to grace. Such a one is at last left in darkness as one joined to idols.
