Matthew 11:30

For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Jesus invites all who labor under sin and sorrow to come to him, take his yoke of obedience and learn his meekness, and in doing so find rest for the soul. His yoke is submission to God's commandments and law of love in lifelong service, and his burden is the work of discipleship in carrying that yoke. It is easy and light not because it removes duty, self-denial and the cross, but because he bore its weight on Calvary and now bears the heaviest part alongside those yoked with him. In contrast to galling yokes of sin, worldly care, man-made ritual, Satan's bondage and self-imposed worry and control, his yoke brings freedom, delight and transforming grace to the submissive heart. Rest comes only on condition of coming just as they are, yielding the will wholly to him and learning daily in his school, and those who do find peace, strength for toil and power to overcome.

Words and Immediate Setting

The invitation is open to everyone who labors and feels heavily burdened, calling them to come, take the yoke, learn from one who is meek and lowly in heart, and so receive rest for the soul, because the yoke is easy and the burden is light. No one is excluded from the offer, which presents him as the source of strength, help, comfort and hope for all in trouble. Accepting the invitation and learning in his school is what equips a person to lead others to him. Those who accept it experience its truth, and all are to seek this promised rest and show the world that wearing his yoke brings genuine happiness.

The promise closes his rebuke of Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum for failing to repent, and his thanks to the Father for hiding truth from the wise and revealing it to babes, ending with rest for the soul through taking his yoke and learning his meekness and lowliness because his rule is gentle and his load is not heavy. It is part of the gospel sounding down through the ages to the present, still ringing above world confusion and trouble, where taking his easy yoke means doing God's commandments as the only hope of rescue. The same rest is offered throughout the history of the church as the peace and assurance belonging to righteousness. As the greatest Teacher he speaks to laboring, heavy-laden students, knocking at the door of the heart with angels present when the Spirit moves, so that hearing his voice brings pardon, true joy and clearer views of him as Sin-bearer, and setting studies aside to seek him is no loss. Giving thanks for the security of the covenant of redemption, he then opens his heart of love to offer salvation beyond priests and Pharisees to all people, rich and poor, high and low, learned and unlearned, presenting eternal life, inviting all into the covenant of grace as balm for sorrow over sin and disquiet of thought.

It was spoken from yearning to make souls happy, in successful work with the common people who heard gladly, and belonging to him and learning his meekness and lowliness gives rest to laboring, heavy-laden souls because his way is gentle and not crushing. He gave the invitation while walking among people uplifting the weak, the halting and the suffering and gladdening the hearts of the desponding and discouraged. It closes his far-reaching invitation of kindness to weary, oppressed souls, showing tender pitying love that rebukes selfishness and heartlessness, patience that never wearies and love never repressed. Spoken wherever he went, in temple, streets, field and wayside, as he scattered blessings, preached the gospel, healed the sick and let gospel light shine, it belongs to his example of constant progress in unselfish service and going about doing good for followers to copy. He bore this yoke himself in ceaseless toil teaching in the temple, healing the sick, explaining Scripture in streets and byways, comforting mourners, bringing hope to the hopeless and healing scars made by sin, until exhausted human nature cried for rest and sleep in a fisherman's boat, rebuking those who do nothing to bless others. The same care appears in sympathy for the weary from heavy burdens, sharing their burdens and teaching God's love, kindness and goodness.

He spoke with positive authority, not guesswork, in perfect harmony of voice and subject, and his invitations of mercy and goodness cut away doubt whether the Lord will hear prayer, have mercy and give favor, so that mercy, grace and salvation in God can be found with certainty without remaining in ignorance and questioning. His I will makes the invitation certain, not dependent on changing feelings, and accepting his yoke and learning from his meek and lowly heart brings rest to the soul. The promise is to be grasped by faith and held fast even in difficulty. It is to be claimed by asking and believing in order to receive salvation of the soul. It must be personally accepted in entire faith as a word from his lips, held in humility and earnest prayer, asking and seeking with confidence that the Father will verify his word and make claimants rich in grace, because faithful is he that promised. He means exactly what he says and is to be taken at his word, so the helpless soul hangs upon him and trusts the promise, finding the hand nailed to the cross stretched out to save, hear confession, receive requests, forgive sins and make the sinner a member of the royal family, giving hope to cheer under every circumstance and grace to bear all temptations.

Rest comes by simply looking in faith to Jesus lifted on the cross for everlasting life, exactly as bidden, just as bitten Israelites were commanded to look to the bronze serpent lifted on the pole and whoever looked was immediately healed. The call goes to sinful, erring, weak, unworthy souls, to weary, homesick, sin-sick souls, to those longing to understand the Lord and his ways, and to the disappointed and perplexed, to come, accept his guidance and learn from his meek and lowly heart. It means obedient looking without reasoning how it is possible or questioning where the power to make whole lies, for those who stopped to reason died.

The promise is full and complete, and even the frailest who implicitly obeys his word will find rest by wearing his yoke and learning from him rather than learning from those with no living connection with God. With the authority of true goodness and greatness it speaks to the wealthy, to people in business and high trust, to educated and gifted leaders, and to all in high social position who trust riches and feel not their danger, meeting those heart-sore and sick of vanity who long for peace they do not have and hunger and thirst for salvation and enduring value. It is to be brought home to them by personal labor with tender affection, brotherly regard and kind manner made tender by love. Coming brings a person onto holy ground into the presence of superior goodness immeasurably beyond anything earth affords and close to the living fountain of mercy and love, where the life of the only begotten Son offered up and assurance of pardon for the guilty race are impressed on heart and mind by the Spirit. It also offers relief to those burdened by sin and responsibility, to sin-weary souls coming in faith, to the woe-stricken inhabitants of earth entreated by the loving Saviour, giving assurance of peace and pardon to the guilty through one meek and lowly in heart with power to secure salvation. Finding this rest means coming to the fountain of living water to drink and gaining the most vital thing, the knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ whom he sent, proved by revealing God in life and character and making him known to others, a light, joy and peace found nowhere else.

For Edson the invitation to those who labor and feel heavily burdened to come, take the yoke, learn from the meek and humble character and receive rest means rest and peace come only through full surrender, while struggling to maintain his own way leaves him without rest or peace. The yoke is easy and the burden light in contrast to heavy burdens a person gathers to himself that leave the mind in constant perplexity and trial, a self-imposed yoke God did not place on the neck. For him this means laying down the heavy burdens he placed on himself and taking Christ's yoke in ministering in word and doctrine with active mind and clear understanding of Scripture to write books of special interest.

It is an invitation to Hattie Belden and her daughter to come to Jesus, learn from his meek and lowly heart and find rest for their souls, since serving under him is not an oppressive burden. When Mary submits her will to God and follows him she knows his yoke is easy and burden light, because surrendering the unsubdued will is the way out of its bondage, not a hardship that makes salvation hard.

Not wearing his yoke left John Kellogg and Willie Kellogg in darkness, while he calls them to take it, unite with brethren who all need to wear it, and learn his meekness and lowliness of heart which gives rest to the soul. Wearing it and keeping hold of his strength makes them children of light, all light in the Lord, revealing his meekness and lowliness. Wearing it means taking fewer burdens than in the past, walking unitedly and circumspectly with him as helper and sufficiency, having no fellowship with unfruitful works of darkness but reproving them.

The invitation completes his gracious call to all laboring under heavy loads to come for rest of soul by taking his yoke and learning his meekness and lowliness, where his rule brings ease and relief. It was extended to save leading men in the medical work at Berrien Springs from carrying out cherished personal plans and treating the effort to save them as victory over brethren, calling them to accept the outstretched helping hand. Their refusal leaves his appeal asking why they will not come and find rest and why they refuse his help. The weary invalid too is invited to find rest in him by taking up assigned work rather than remaining inactive, feeling responsibility, living as a family by themselves, doing useful household labor within strength while shunning wearing labor, letting the mind receive healthy tone by dwelling on heavenly things, and earnestly training children in nurture and admonition, which also relieves others of constant care and sympathy.

Learning to follow means wearing his yoke and carrying his burdens, which the young women were not doing while giving Edith their deepest affection and letting admiration for her draw them from devotion to God. His yoke of following and learning is easy and his burden light, giving rest to comers and enabling development of Christlike character even in a corrupt age, as Enoch did.

The invitation calls laboring, heavy-laden people today to gain a fitted experience under the divine Teacher who stays with them to help and instruct, as Moses was kept with God through forty years of shepherd work until fitted to lead his people out of bondage. This learning goes on even in aggressive warfare amid hindrances and contention, ignorance and cheap earthly conceptions, duplicity and pride of opinion, perils by land and sea, false brethren, privations, trials, discord and strife, because submission to his training brings relief rather than oppression. Taking his yoke means learning his humility and meekness, as Moses learned to lay aside pride and self-sufficiency and become patient, reverent, humble and very meek. It means walking humbly before God, putting away self-sufficiency, and helping imperiled souls with gentle words and acts as God's little children rather than driving them farther away by harshness.

The call comes from the divine Christ who took human nature without ceasing to be divine, whose meek and lowly character gives the pattern for learning from him, offering the weary rest through a yoke and burden easy and light. It reveals him as greater than Abraham and Paul in genuine courtesy, his whole life a striking illustration of courtesy with countless instances of kindness, tender sympathy and love, and marvelous condescension shedding softness and beauty over his entire life. He has a kind look and encouraging word for all wearied and worn with labor, ready to help the most helpless.

Meaning of Yoke and Burden

The yoke is restraint and submission and obedience, requiring full and complete obedience to all of God's commandments because human beings belong to him by creation and by redemption, and the burden is the work and duty of carrying that yoke in service and discipleship, including self-denial, lifting the cross and following in his footprints, with responsibility in his work. Taking it means accepting submission, restraint and obedience with meekness and humility, receiving the truth and practicing it, coming into harmony with him and learning meekness and lowliness of heart, and those so yoked find rest and peace and are enabled to keep God's law. Wearing that yoke means following the obedience he himself exemplified, forming a character God can approve rather than living to please natural inclinations. Unlike a self-made yoke which is galling, his yoke of restraint and obedience is easy and his burden light.

The yoke that binds to service is the law of God, the great law of love revealed in Eden, proclaimed upon Sinai, and in the new covenant written in the heart, which binds the worker to the will of God. As cattle are yoked for effectual labor, so people are called to service as long as life lasts as co-laborers with him, joined to God's will which is high and noble and elevating for lifelong service as co-workers. God so confines people to his will that they do not follow their own inclinations into Satan's snare and become possessors of his attributes, but patiently and wisely take up the duties of service. Yokes men frame for themselves that seem light prove heavy and galling and intolerably heavy, while submitting to his yoke and giving up the unprofitable struggle teaches needed lessons and gives rest, and yoking with him as co-worker brings perfect rest and freedom whereas self-rule does not bring true liberty. His yoke prepared by God is easy and light because it is in conformity with his requirements and his ten holy precepts, and wearing it in obedience is duty, while Satan's yokes are heavy because they are not in conformity and bind to the world against the commandments.

The easy yoke and light burden mean the work God lays out in Isaiah 58:6-11 for fellowmen and for him, and that work should be tried. They do not give a life of ease and freedom and selfish indulgence, for his life was self-denial and self-sacrifice at every step and his true follower follows in his footsteps with consistent Christlike tenderness and love, becoming inspired with his spirit and life. The yoke is also the yoke of obedience meaning surrender of will and way and purpose to God, love for God and faith shown by obedience, receiving him as Saviour and taking a decided stand to be on the Lord's side, specifically by keeping the seventh day as the Sabbath after six days of labor, which gives rest to the soul, so that delay in surrender is loss every hour.

His yoke is a life of restraint and obedience learned by sharing his humility, and his meekness and lowliness lead followers toward peace and contentment and joy and an immortal inheritance. It means giving up the will to God, the same thing as taking up the cross, cutting selfishness from the soul and ending following one's own way and doing one's own pleasure, denying inclinations and wishes when they do not accord with divine requirements even to a complete change of plans and purposes, and it cannot be separated from following him. Like the yoke on oxen that aids in drawing the load, his yoke lightens life's load when the will is swallowed up in the will of God and his gifts are used to bless others, and walking in his commandments means walking with him whose love brings rest to the heart. The bearer looks to the Master to direct the course in difficulty and presses more closely to his side as circumstances grow more trying, and finds the heaviest labor can be performed and the heaviest burdens borne because the Lord gives strength and gladness in doing the work. Accepting his yoke gladly displaces haughty self-sufficiency and makes room for his meekness and lowliness in daily life, so that when self is given to God he controls every part of the being.

His yoke is not galling to the true Christian, for serving him is the truest freedom and obedience to God's law is a delight, and the Christian strives to live up to the law's perfection rather than lowering its commands to match shortcomings. It becomes easy and light when the heart is changed to see the beauty of holiness and to love God and his law, so that obedience springs from a heart aligned with God. Those who learn from him and take his yoke find rest because he walks with them and bears the heaviest weight, accepting obedience and even suffering for his sake without complaint, trusting his presence and following his example of keeping the Father's commandments. The ease and lightness do not mean obedience is unnecessary, for living in harmony with his holy and just and good law is the path of life and in the believer's highest interest. His yoke is the willing service of one whose will is being freed from sin and brought into harmony with him, and as people consent to serve him he shapes their thoughts and aims to conform to his will, so that doing his service expresses their own refined and sanctified impulses and becomes their highest delight. What Satan presents as galling, claiming it means giving up everything pleasant and yielding to arbitrary laws, really means loving God with all heart and soul and spirit in return for what he has done and living out the principles of the Word including in the family, opposed because it fits people to be children of God and partakers of blessing.

The yoke of restraint and obedience is easy and the burden light when his truth is in the heart and his life gives strength, and wearing it keeps followers safe on the Lord's side and enables them to resist temptation and remain steadfast, whereas without his strength they cannot stand firm. Rest comes when truth moves beyond mere conviction of conscience into the heart, placed there by the Spirit to captivate the soul and renew the spirit of the mind and show transforming power in character, for truth held by conscience alone while the heart resists only agitates the mind and leaves restlessness, but received in the heart makes following gentle and freeing. It is borne through meek humble submission to his rule and obedience to God's law, yielding the whole being to his control where his transforming grace makes sinners complete, and this submission brings peace and is the condition of salvation. Worn by pressing close to his side with his truth in the heart and his life as vitalizing power within, learned by sitting at his feet to be meek and lowly, those who wear it are strong in the Lord to resist temptations from within and without and to stand firm instead of bending like a willow at criticism or failing through dependence on man. God shapes the character of those who accept it, makes them partakers of the divine nature and gives power to overcome the world's corruption, so that hearers who obey form righteous characters while those who disregard form characters shaped by indulged desires.

Taking his yoke is taking up in covenant the yoke of restraint and obedience to follow him and learn of him as a student in his school. Putting the name on the church books declares that covenant to wear his yoke, to serve him voluntarily and to be his follower, and complying with his invitation means yoking up with him from the heart by daily genuine conversion and linking up with him every day by earnest prayer. Formal union with the church without heart-union with him is worthless, and failing to lift the cross and yoke up with him loses much in this life and everything in the future life. The yoke is taken in the covenant of membership to walk in his footsteps in harmony and love and unity in meekness and lowliness of mind, drawing together in sympathy and forbearance, cultivating courtesy and respect, strengthening the weak and inexperienced, so that what is lacking in one is supplied by another and all talents work together under the Spirit as he worked. Wearing it is the only way for the church to have most perfect unity, with rest found in learning his meekness and lowliness, and wearing it means accepting the conditions of service through which by his grace human beings are united with the divine and joined in heart and mind.

The yoke is worn through humble dependence on God and faith that trusts him at all times and in every circumstance. Wearing it means bringing every passion under God's control and bringing thoughts into captivity to him, and this leads to healthy growth in beauty and grace of character. It is the restraint of the Spirit, so that those yoked with him resist heated passion and refrain from speaking angry fiery words, as he teaches meekness and lowliness and gives rest to the soul. Even when the natural tendency is to seek amusement and avoid responsibility, submitting to his discipline is not crushing, for thoughts are brought into captivity and the way of obedience is easy and light. His yoke is made up of patience and gentleness and longsuffering, and he humbled himself and took human nature to teach fallen people how to share in the divine nature, so that learning his meekness teaches them to love one another and refuse to criticize and condemn, borne by learning from him and placing self in his hands. This lived obedience brings rest and includes practicing Christian politeness and treating others as one wishes to be treated, and those who take it work with God and carry his burdens so that when they meet temptation they can endure without being overcome or dishonoring their Redeemer.

Why His Yoke Is Easy

His yoke of doing the work God gives is easy and its burden light because he bore its weight on the cross at Calvary. Of himself man can accomplish nothing in that great work set forth by God, and he came to show men how to do it, so those who come, take his yoke, learn his meekness and lowliness of heart find rest of soul in that service, the yoke manageable and the load not heavy. His call is to all who labor and carry heavy loads to take up his way of working and receive rest, and the cross he requires to be borne creates more strength than it uses up, though taking his burden still means meeting conflicts and trials in doing duty. The hindrances to perfecting Christian character are in ourselves which he can remove, and every self-denial and sacrifice in following him is a step of the lost sheep returning toward the open doors of the heavenly Canaan entered through the door and not by climbing up some other way, the life he prepared through his own suffering and death never having cost pain or grief if it had never been left.

The yoke is easy and light because he carries the weight for those yoked with him, stays near and bears the heaviest part, so yoked to the car of duty the burdens of life are carried lightly while without him the load is heavy. Rest and peace come only on condition of yoking up with him, and learning from him and wearing his yoke makes learners meek and lowly in heart who through experience find rest in serving him and bear joyful witness to its lightness. His yoke helps bear every burden that needs to be carried, and willing obedience to God's requirements brings peace of mind, clear judgment and steadfastness of character to redeem through faith, with meekness and humility marking all obedient to God's law. Serving him is not an unbearable burden, for when people take his yoke and learn from him he carries the load with them and they receive promised help, finding rest in trying to please the Lord as students of his meek and lowly lessons.

He makes work lighter because he bears the yoke with his people as laborers together with God able to sow the world with seed bearing fruit for him. His promise of a light burden rests on his own experience, for he bore human nature and was tempted as people are, feeling affliction even more keenly because his nature was higher and nobler, and he is fully able to help because through strength received from God he overcame Satan and fallen angels. His human nature, not his divine nature, endured the wilderness temptations and the contradiction of sinners, living a perfect human life tempted in all points like others and suffering physical weariness, weakness, hunger, thirst, sadness and sorrow over hard hearts, spending whole nights in prayer for those who would not come for life, so those for whom he suffered should not choose own will and selfish gratification since without him nothing can be done. His yoke of submission is easy and his burden light because he bore the difficulties and trials human beings face, and those who take it and learn his meekness find rest with a way of escape provided though the enemy brings strong temptations, his sympathetic heart identifying with suffering people while God's mind, peace and grace guide the worker serving as instrument in God's hands.

The easiness rests on his humiliation and atoning sacrifice which unlocked the gates of prayer, set ajar the gates of hope and opened the heaven he desires people to reach, while his patience, forbearance and grace keep it open, giving reason now to believe, hold fast to the arm of God's power and trust without worrying. His humility is shown in veiling his divine nature in humanity and humbling himself as a man, no humility surpassing that of the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, and looking to him subdues self-seeking so the spiritual eye beholds the glory of his character. He took human nature and lived it out to show how flawed humanity with objectionable features, infirmities, tendencies and prejudices can link up in harmony of opinion and sentiment, which means learning from him who is meek and lowly, looking to him for how to act, seeking wisdom from God, committing mind and soul to his leading and not cultivating natural and hereditary tendencies to wrong. The invitation comes from One who was Prince of heaven and made infinite sacrifice to come to a world marred by the curse and lay hold of fallen humanity, carrying terms that must be accepted by taking his yoke, learning his meekness and rendering cheerful obedience to become an example, with every advantage to accepters who find the rest they crave. Taking the easy yoke means denying self, taking up the cross and following him in consecration, self-denial and self-sacrifice as he lived when he left heaven, lived the law and gave himself for souls, for only in that self-denying discipleship is rest found fitting believers for prepared mansions, exemplified in laying aside royal robe and crown to come as a babe living lowliness, poverty, privation and self-sacrifice to establish correct methods of medical missionary work in simplicity and economy without display or demanding stipulated sums.

Spoken to every human being whether they know it or not because all are weary and heavy laden with burdens only he can remove, the easy yoke and light burden mean release from the heaviest burden of sin that would crush sinners if left to bear it, because the Sinless One took their place and bore guilt to give rest. It also means he bears the burden of care and sorrow, inviting all to cast care upon him because he carries them on his heart and understands every circumstance of life. No human or angelic being is a sin-bearer and no one can save self by good works or blot out one sin, so the weary, despairing, weak and troubled must look away from self, lay sins of omission and commission upon him who bore the sins of the whole world, and believe his words that he pardons and accepts the erring just as they are to become children of God through his blood, for he loves to have the weak come, bears long with erring children and ministers by angels to every believing soul. His followers can bring every trouble to him and leave it with him trusting he will carry it, for he is the sin-bearer who takes away the world's sin.

His yoke is easy and his burden light because believers are privileged to draw from his inexhaustible supply of grace and light and love, and the more they impart to meet the necessities of others the more they receive, with their own souls refreshed and satisfied by his love. Accepting his invitation by linking life with him and submitting the whole self to God brings rest of soul, and those who take up this yoke of discipleship and service are sustained by that inexhaustible supply. His service is not an oppressive burden, for his abundant fullness supplies every qualification needed by those who serve sincerely, and those who accept and learn his meekness and lowliness find rest sustained by grace.

The yoke becomes easy and the burden light as human character is transformed, for through faith anyone may become one with him in obedience and service sharing his life and the inner strength of piety that animated him. Wearing his yoke and lifting his burdens means putting him on in words, spirit and actions with him living within, a life of obedience to all God's commandments from love and disinterested, true-hearted, honorable labor taking up responsibility toward fellow men as the law defines and loving neighbor as self, so all service merges into his life, not feebleness and inactivity or self-love and self-pleasing but noble obedience revealing itself as part of his life and making its possessor a partaker of the divine nature. John learned to wear his yoke and bear his burden as he opened his heart to his influence, hid self in him and followed his lessons, yielding as he watched his tenderness and forbearance and learned humility and patience until a violent, proud, ambitious spirit gave way to a life shaped by him.

The yoke of following him is easy and his burden light when a person's will is aligned with God's and they walk beside him, carrying their part while he carries the heavier part and growing one step at a time, so taking up the cross, denying self, overcoming the world and following in his path do not make the burden gall the neck but give rest and strength for the way. Taking his yoke means restraining human will, appetite and inclination, and yielding to him brings rest bearing witness that his yoke is easy, found easy when a person gives up own will to be led and taught, choosing his disposition and doing his will so even heaviest spiritual labor can be borne because the Lord gives strength, power and gladness. His yoke is easy when life is in harmony with him and learns from him, but galls when out of harmony, and coming to him with burdens brings rest for he knows sorrows and stands ready to help, with wearing his yoke involving obedience and sanctification through truth, growing in divine life, understanding duty and confessing him. Taking them means fully surrendering to God, submitting to the yoke and bearing its burdens rather than making a half-hearted commitment.

The yoke is easy to a submissive person and his burden light, for learning from him who is meek and lowly brings rest to the soul. It proves easy and light only to those who submit and learn his meekness and lowliness, which means self-sacrifice and entire consecration of body, soul and spirit, and all who would work for the Master must enter that submission while those who have not are not to be exalted to high positions, yet as workers learn they find service restful and do not grow weary. It is easy and light for one who submits entirely and accepts the whole truth with all its consequences, only appearing galling and the cross only looking fearful, inconvenient and too heavy because Satan makes it appear so, for he loves the sinner, accepts full consecration and becomes Burden-bearer and never-failing Friend so none need try hard to save self or do some great thing to commend self to God but cast away fear, leave consequences with the Lord and resolutely and cheerfully lay hold, when taken up thus the burden not grievous but a support lifting the bearer. His yoke is lighter than the burden of sin and the pain of a violated conscience, belonging to his invitation to the weary to come and find rest from One who understands weakness and temptation and gives help rather than demanding they carry burdens alone, and it is easy when the heart is fully surrendered so love springs up, the will is yielded and what was a cross becomes a pleasure, whereas reliance on own efforts brings no rest but rest comes through faith in his acceptance of repentance.

Heavy Yokes in Contrast

His yoke is a yoke of love and tenderness, unlike the galling burden of worldly cares, customs and fashions that weary people and mar character, and even the weakest can grow strong through grace while wearing it in harmony with God, with fullness of joy and praise, humility, active communion, tenderness, mutual respect and kindness among laborers instead of tearing down another's work or needing outside amusements. His service is not a crushing ritual burden like man-made ceremonies and priestly restrictions that left continual unrest and inability to meet requirements, obscured the commandments and turned the Sabbath into a burden hiding its true meaning, nor minute rabbinical requirements that could not be kept and left no rest from troubled conscience and discouraged service, nor a different yoke formed by ministers teaching fables and foolish human imaginings that galls souls with disquietude and discouragement, for God's law itself is holy, just and good and becomes grievous only when human requirements are added and presented as God's, and no one keeps it without His righteousness but through His strength can obey fully and reflect His character. His yoke is easy and light in contrast to Satan's yoke, and by taking it and learning from Him a person finds rest, recovers from sin and is freed from captivity, while refusing it leaves one yoked with Satan and his confederacy in deceiving destroying power and held captive unless surrender is without reserve. Refusing means putting a heavy galling yoke on one's own neck by sinful indulgence, such as appetites with no foundation in nature like drinking wine or beer, using tobacco, and cardplaying and gambling that fill the mind with vain hopes, degrading God-given powers with irritating galling consequences difficult to break once taken.

The heavy galling yoke in contrast is self-made and self-imposed, cumbrous, consisting of worldly anxiety and care, guilt, self-righteousness, and following own ways, wills and plans, leaving darkness, discouragement, tumult and bondage, while His prepared yoke brings rest, peace and wisdom unto salvation, knowledge to the ignorant and hope to the despairing. Surrender must put off that self-made yoke and take His instead, yielding whole mind, soul and body, resting in the compassionate Saviour, receiving Christ through the Holy Spirit as ever-abiding power and sufficiency, laying burdens at His feet rather than rushing to human agencies, becoming meek and lowly with self hid, ceasing complaint and judging, beholding His spotless purity until self dies, the new birth quenches unholy ambition that keeps guilt upon the soul, and daily beholding and practicing His virtues keeps perception clear and the yoke easy. Only humble, contrite, diligent students who cherish meekness find abiding peace, saving knowledge of Scripture, rich experience in trusting and obeying, strength in the Redeemer despite feebleness, and quietness amid tumult by believing without feeling and working from principle in unwavering trust, laboring as He labored with self-sacrifice to strengthen weak hands, confirm feeble knees, remove stumbling blocks and bring sinners to conversion, laying aside the yoke of bondage made by serving the world and worrying over its cares to make His service the chief aim.

Unlike painful burdens people make for themselves by dwelling on trials, condemning themselves, doubting God, worrying, planning and trying to manage everything alone with perplexity, care and worry, taking His yoke means coming, learning His meekness and lowliness, trusting His promise to bear griefs and burdens, and finding rest. The responsibilities the Lord gives are not to overtax so as to leave weariness, irritability and loss of self-control, and duties God did not design to be performed, excessive or unsuitable demands He never made duty, are not to be groaned under, but are to be borne with trust, pure, sweet, sympathetic heart. Christ lays no galling yoke, so no yoke made by any human being should be taken up for self or for God's people, for cooperating with Him keeps His yoke easy and communion with Him lightens daily burdens, following the plain course of duty without letting earthly ties however dear obstruct it and without letting human agents frame duties or bind and hamper movement now or in the future, allowing truth to shape character and standing free. Taking His yoke means struggling not against natural claims but against sin to be met and repulsed at every step in the plainly marked way of denying self and taking up the cross daily.

His yoke is not oppressive like yokes devised to control others, contrasting human control, dictation over those laboring in partnership with God, kingly authority, human-imposed restraints on service, and extra tests and crosses invented for others, and followers are not to submit to them or be ruled by human will but to be guided by God's word, learning from Him in meekness, humility and lowliness in daily obedience, with requirements presented in mercy and invitation rather than hardness, and with humble prayer and reliance receiving strength and committing the case to truthful righteous judgment, since the Father understands weakness, needs and capacities. This presents a choice between His yoke and man's yoke of human control and influence, which must be broken and taken away before physicians and workers for God can do their God-given part in proclaiming truth, requiring refusal to remain noncommittal or neutral in the conflict between the Prince of life and the prince of darkness, freed from deceptive sentiments that spoil faith and lead downward to denying Him who bought them. Those appointed to His work wear His yoke only when they refuse to bind themselves to human-devised restrictions, such as conditions on handling God's goods like the sale of health foods, for coming exactly to men's terms is not wearing His yoke but a yoke framed by human devising that proves a snare, and God will give counterorders to restrictions that bind His servants, leaving them free under God alone as owner and manager to act as circumstances demand.

Wearing His yoke means refusing to make leaders burden-bearers by pouring all difficulties and perplexities into them and wearing them out, refusing to take on the crushing burden of acting as conscience for others, and refusing to carry others' sins by dwelling on, watching, accusing and talking of faults and errors, since Jesus alone as Redeemer bore human sin in His own body and alone knows the worth of souls He purchased, and no human can be a sin-bearer even for his own guilt, so to take that work crushes the life out and bows one down while bringing distress rather than rest. Instead burdens, need for wisdom, and others' mistakes are to be brought straight to God who gives liberally, turning attention to Him who heals, comforts, gives hope, peace and rest, with each individually accountable to God and acting as God moves rather than being moved by another mind, impressed and directed by the Spirit with freedom of action and choice instead of human restraint, founded on Christ and His righteousness. In contrast to oppressive self-placed demands such as fashion that sacrifices health and life's best interests and enslaves, His way brings freedom from that self-imposed slavery, and obedience to God's and nature's laws brings contentment, peace and happiness, meaning contentment with plain, convenient, healthful clothing and living usefully by His meekness and simplicity rather than a burden heavier than He requires. The mother fails to hear His invitation to rest because fashion's clamorous demands drown out His voice, its very galling yoke overtaxing mind and body with early and late work to remodel garments and keep pace with display, leaving her too tired and heartless to read the Bible, pray or train children, and bringing perplexity and distress.

Receiving Rest by Coming

Rest comes only on condition of yoking with him, by coming, taking his yoke and learning meekness and lowliness of heart. That rest is quiet sitting under the shadow of his love with great delight, not hasty transit, learning quiet trust, gaining strength for toil and conflict, lessening care and worry, and possessing his peace, rich blessings, hope and cheer through his promises. He stands at the side to bear the heaviest part of the load, so burdens of life and the car of duty are carried lightly, while without him the load is heavy. Rest of spirit and mind comes in proportion to willing obedience to God's requirements, giving clear judgment and steadfastness of character through faith, with meekness and humility marking all obedient to God's law, peace in his service, the whole being submitted to his control, and transforming grace making fallen beings complete in him. Many miss it because busy activity leaves no time to rest quietly in promises, but the soul must take hold of eternal realities, mount higher on faith's wings after the divine, conquer by obedience, recognize blessing with thankful spirit, and even amid confusion and weariness find peace in Jesus.

The promise is made to all in perplexity and sorrow with no ifs or ands, and rest is assured to all who come. His yoke is the yoke of obedience, not binding or galling, but easy and giving rest in spirit with a light burden. Rest comes in the very act of taking the yoke and is found in experience, then realized more fully that his yoke is easy and his burden light. Entering that rest through Jesus begins eternal life here, as people learn from him and walk with him, filled with his love and satisfied with his presence, testifying from experience, including by serving God in teaching others the way of life.

Taking his yoke requires coming in faith and accepting his invitation, and the oppressed and discouraged laboring under discouragement find comfort and rest. Those who refuse do so because separated from him, and refusing his gracious invitation means refusing his help and rest and missing learning in his school that brings sympathy with him and fellow believers and wisdom unto salvation. In contrast to his easy yoke and light burden, many take their own yokes and by that choice bring themselves into difficulty. The invitation is joined to coming in faith, receiving pardon for sin, and being renewed and transformed.

He tells helpless, sinful, heavy-laden people to come just as they are. Coming means falling upon him as the Rock and being broken, seeing self as it is, pleading with God, drawing nigh so he draws nigh, and seeing defects of character as imbued with the enemy's spirit working his will to kill the soul and leave it in danger. Taking his easy yoke and light burden brings deliverance, and when tempted he lifts a standard against the enemy. Those who come need not carry sins or rely on self for salvation but lay sins on him who laid down his life to save, find rest and sustaining presence, are received without repulse or humiliation, and bring him all burdens to receive rest and peace. Once conditions are met the burden of sin is not to be carried or measured by feeling but rolled upon the Saviour in full trust that he gives rest as promised, with pardon certain when sins are confessed with contrition and put away in simple childlike faith as sons and daughters, while those who will not come do not receive life and many keep grievous self-manufactured burdens under condemnation and doubt that wounds his heart.

Coming means coming with contrition of soul and receiving him as personal Saviour, which strengthens faith. Coming means bringing everything to him and making him dependence and trust, going to him alone rather than applying to any human agent for light, for he is the one Mediator and Intercessor who helps wisely, the Lamb of God who takes away sin in whom is all sufficiency. Telling him failings and receiving instruction from his words is eating his flesh and drinking his blood and becoming partakers of the divine nature, turning to God and the Bible as true standard instead of by-and forbidden paths where human is mixed with divine and fables taught as truth, so all naming his name depart from iniquity. Taking the easy yoke with becoming a student of the Word softens and subdues the heart by the Spirit, opens the mind to teaching in nature, and prepares for study and learning even in practical labor like breaking and cultivating soil. Coming lays sin, vice, folly, pride and worldliness at his cross because he loves and saves from sins not in them, bringing peace and rest of conscience, clean heart, renewed mind, satisfied wants, salvation within reach through great promises sealed by his given life, though many turn with disdain giving eternal things transient thought, and accepting truth brings longing for transformation.

The invitation directs to seek help from him rather than making others bear difficulties, for his service is not oppressive and those entrusted with God's work should rely on him for wisdom, linked with one mighty in counsel who never mistakes. Help is to be sought from him directly because he is near at the right hand, instead of sending far away, rather than coming to human beings for counsel. He himself can carry comers and all their burdens, strength lies in taking every burden and difficulty to the great Burden Bearer, honor is conferred on those coming in believing prayer, human help is feeble and divine power infallible, so believers must counsel with God for the Spirit's guidance, bring united prayer in Jesus' name mingled with praise and thanksgiving with unwavering faith, humble themselves, and refuse to make flesh their arm lest unbelief steal in and faith die. No surer way to rest is offered than coming, taking his yoke, learning from him, with assurance his service is not heavy and he is source of help rather than human resources, distant places, or conference presidents, bringing onto holy ground near mercy with the way opened from embarrassment.

Rest is found by coming without delay, bringing burdens and trials to his sympathy, sorrows to his love, wounds to his healing, weakness to his strength, and emptiness to his fullness, exchanging heavy self-life and wounded self for his rule and learning his meekness. He never disappoints a surrendered soul but lightens all who look to him, as self is surrendered and he abides within. Coming and learning from his meek and lowly heart brings rest, urging placing burdens on Jesus and trusting promises as an anchor to God rather than drifting, offering comfort to one overwhelmed by work and care to learn and trust rather than carry all alone. The heavier the burdens cast on him the more blessed the rest, for he watches, delivers, strengthens, enlightens and heals those turning to him so they endure trials, with rest available to all under plainly stated conditions. Those bringing burdens in prayer and trust find them easier to bear, whether a mother weighed by child-training receiving sustaining strength, cheerfulness, hope, courage and wisdom, or one in conscious weakness amid hardship finding relief, strength, calmness and peace because Jesus carries burdens brought to him.

Taking his yoke and learning his meekness and lowliness is the only way sinners can be saved and find rest, marking every step of the only path to the strait gate into the narrow way. No one can obey and be saved in own strength, so sinners are told not to worry or fear but come trusting his strength instead of human weakness, and yoked with him as Redeemer he himself is strength and efficiency, which makes yoke and burden manageable. It draws affections from the world, binds interests to his, and brings close fellowship with God by joining his strength to those coming in trust. Coming, taking and learning brings an experience every soul must have to enter the kingdom, proving all God could do has been done to save, choosing God's way under God's protection, while refusing to yoke and learn leaves no protection and persisting in disobedience leaves sinners under Satan's deceiving destroying power where sin brings death.

The yoke stays light and does not weigh down when believers first come and then take only work he specifies. No extra burdens are to be gathered having no special relation to God's work, everything undertaken is to represent true Christianity, meekness is learned, and work is done in his lines as a sanctified people with assurance of pleasing God. True love works without friction by carrying no self-manufactured burdens and putting no self-invented yoke on the neck, laying off self-imposed loads to do only God-given work in own lot, surrendering as a child in his school, opening the heart by faith to the gospel testimony, letting light shine, and coming closer to brethren, which works revolution in the heart. His yoke and burdens are not burdens from taking more than can be done wisely and well, extra burdens are to be left with Jesus while necessary burdens are borne with him as he sustains, working humbly within abilities rather than trusting competence, keeping work within God-given physical and mental strength to preserve spirituality and firmly refusing excess that brings over-weariness, irritation, and loss of blessing.

The promise belongs to those who really trust him. Effectual workers do the work he left, commit it to the Lord in prayer for wisdom and guidance, then leave results wholly with him instead of taking the burden back, planning and executing all themselves, worrying, fretting, groaning under overwork, and living in constant activity. Those trusting what they commit find promised rest to the soul, peace and rest, and with a company wholly relying he accomplishes a great work where one chases a thousand and two put ten thousand to flight. The promise is recalled amid heavy heart and uncertainty as assurance alongside promises forming the mind of Christ and steadfast loyalty, calling dependence and wholehearted seeking to find help and duty by God's counsel rather than human judgment, placing cares on him rather than carrying as if work depended on self, working faithfully without worry to be used for glory, and taking time to wait in his presence rather than exhausting in unceasing labor.

The invitation to burdened and heavy-laden people to come is joined to receiving personal spiritual care through prayer, conversation, home visits, and searching the Word. Resting in him as personal Saviour brings new life, and a worker knowing him can lead others to that same rest and peace.

Transformed Character and Discipleship

Learning his meekness and lowliness is the higher education that brings rest to the soul, gained through whole-hearted surrender to God and daily learning in his school of restraint under the Master-teacher. Taking his yoke means coming under the control of God, wearing his yoke of restraint, obeying the rules of Christian principle, and submitting to him as teacher because he is meek and lowly in heart. Teachers must do this first in order to learn self-control before guiding youth, to gain discernment to employ wise methods, and to govern those in charge with firmness yet pleasantly and kindly amid the perversity of childhood and youth. The more he is known the more the learner desires to know him and the more ignorant he feels about eternal things, while studying his Word under this yoke brings growing understanding and illumination as God works within to shape both will and action.

Taking his yoke means learning from him and following his example of meekness and humility, for his life reveals the character his followers must form. His gentleness and humility are to mark their lives, contrary to the spirit of the world, and his life of patient, cheerful, loving service despite trials and temptations exemplifies the invitation. Wearing that yoke of obedience to all God's commandments and restraint from being a channel of sin gives rest and frees from complaint, murmuring, mourning, walking in self-kindled sparks, and devising and planning for self.

Those joined to him as branches to the living Vine bear the same pure, undefiled character and fruit as he does and walk in his steps in the same spirit, humbling self as he humbled himself to lift people to become sons and daughters of God, rather than living in pride, strife, and division. Learning this lesson removes self with all its defects from the front, stops hiding Jesus behind poor selfish humanity, and enables a person to live over again his life in meekness and lowliness of heart. Those who learn it become true witnesses qualified to reveal him by tender pitying love, mercy, good fruits and divine character, while those who do not keep him in the background and bring sorrow when they see they have exalted self in his place. Keeping the eyes fixed on Jesus makes self count as nothing and leads to continually clearer views of his character, and by the Spirit beholding his glory transforms people from character to character into his likeness. No humility surpasses that of the Lamb of God who veiled divinity in humanity, and looking to him subdues self-seeking so the spiritual eye beholds the glory of his character.

Beholding him in speech, in patience, and in good works forms the believer like him, straightening crooked traits and bringing rest. Self, the old disobedient nature, dies and Christ lives in the heart, so the person is born again with a new nature, gains some conception of God, holds truth as truth after glimpsing his glory, and quenches unholy ambition that keeps a galling yoke of guilt upon the soul. Learning from him subdues ambition, pride, and self-esteem, with self hidden in him bringing peace and rest. Ministers respond by letting self die and Christ live in them, which enables them to love one another and prevents the weakness that comes from division. Learning of him gives strength, shapes heart and words toward purity and tenderness, and leads to holiness and a life of love.

Taking the easy yoke and light burden means receiving God's converting power, being converted daily, falling upon the Rock and being broken, giving up pleading for one's own way, ending continual warfare with self, learning meekness and lowliness from him, finding rest, and becoming a blessing to others. It means thorough conversion away from envy, jealousy, evil surmising, strife of tongues, and opposition to his ministers, to meekness, lowliness, confession of wrongs, and sustaining the workers through whom he converts souls. It means humbling self before God, breaking with self-indulgent associations, yielding to the molding of the Holy Spirit to reach the gospel standard, whereupon the humbled one is lifted up and even financial failure is turned to blessing. It calls people to give up cherished sins and stop excusing habits as my way, overcoming conduct that brings trouble to themselves and others, in contrast to striving to be great by breaking commandments and indulging self with riches, which brings shipwreck of faith and loss of eternal life.

Wearing his yoke gives experiential knowledge of God as all who come, receive and practice his teachings, make his words part of life, and place themselves under his instruction as the great Medical Missionary to work with him are given needed knowledge that the world with all its traditional learning cannot supply. He gives wisdom to the meek and lowly, enabling them to discern truth, bringing to light the reason for things and the result of actions, as the Holy Spirit teaches the student of Scripture to judge by righteousness, truth, and justice. Learning from him as the greatest Teacher takes more than reading the Word given for instruction; it takes searching Scripture carefully and diligently, comparing portion with portion because Scripture unlocks Scripture, and reading and praying and studying with the Holy Spirit beside the student as divine Teacher enlightening the understanding. Searching Old and New Testaments in his Spirit enlightens the mind and quickens the heart with holy admiration, and going to him in helplessness, studying his Word, applying it, and asking what the Master says makes his Word become life, strength, comfort, joy, hope, and assurance, which is feeding on him. The easy yoke and light burden are obtained by studying the Word, the highest education and science of a pure Christian life to be taught in schools and sanitariums, and living on the plan of addition in 2 Peter brings help, strength, blessing, and the eloquence of a meek, lowly life.

Taking his yoke means learning from his meekness and lowliness and serving in his spirit of goodness, patience, and love, which consecrates people to bless others and unites them with him and with one another. His service is not a crushing or oppressive burden but gives rest, and as meek teacher he trains followers in goodness, patience, and love so they become channels of love. Those yoked with him work with him in refining speech and temper under the Holy Spirit, following Bible rules and ministering with his mercy, love, and grace, spending time and strength to seek the lost, share truth that brought joy and peace, and tenderly plead with people to come. His meek, gentle, patient, loving character shapes those who have his Spirit, leading them away from bondage into holiness and service, and he stands as compassionate helper amid trials and divisions that weaken the church.

His meekness and lowliness teach the discipline that brings peace, rest, faith, confidence in God, and true happiness, requiring bringing self under God's will, controlling impulses, subduing self, denying inclination, and giving up present advantage for future good. Learning humility from him prevents hard feelings among people and guides those in trust to serve faithfully and correct with gentleness rather than rudeness. Bearing his yoke means enduring insult and abuse without retaliation or prideful opposition, for his gentleness replaces the galling yoke of pride. His humility enables rising above slights, rebuffs, and annoyances without gloom, avoiding quarrels and angry answers, soothing irritation, quieting retaliation, giving strength for victory, making home life happier, with reward an inheritance of glory.

Wearing his yoke means learning from him to be meek and lowly through personal experimental knowledge that does not misrepresent him, complying with conditions God laid down and following the path he marked out, with assurance the gates of the city of God will open at last. Those gaining this experimental knowledge demonstrate it in life, and ministers and physicians must sit at his feet to learn it, constantly guarding mind, soul, words, and spirit to reveal children of God instead of exalting self and human ability. Wearing his yoke is true Christianity and real service, meaning abiding in him, living to please him, building character after his likeness, and receiving all his words including reproof of appetites and passions with reform of character, temper, and disposition. Meekness and lowliness are Christian virtues, yet humility does not mean devaluing oneself or holding a harmful opinion of oneself.

Shared Work and Mission

Taking the yoke is entering a cooperation in which God in Christ yokes Himself with human workers, combining divine power with human effort. The offer carries terms and conditions that must be accepted, for two cannot walk together except they be agreed, and accepting means learning meekness and lowliness of heart and rendering cheerful obedience to the will of God. Every advantage, wisdom and hope belong to those who so accept, becoming an example to others and finding the rest of soul they crave. That labor is laboring as He labored with self-sacrifice, working in His line to strengthen weak hands, confirm feeble knees, take stumbling blocks out of the way, and bring sinners to conversion. It is practical experience of a real living bond between sinner and Saviour in which truth is lived, making His service gentle instead of heavy. It is service shared with Christ for the glory of God and the uplifting of humanity, entered emptied of self, pride and love of supremacy, yielded to the Holy Spirit, accepting the lowest place at the Saviour's feet and waiting for His leading, and then finding rest, peace and calm communion with God in the midst of conflict so the work feels easy and light. Because workers belong to God under His jurisdiction and walk in safe paths trusting His wisdom and not their own, no erring mortal is authorized to muzzle, dictate to, control, or say you shall do this and you shall not do that to a fellow worker, and such domineering power as exercised at Battle Creek is offensive, never given by God, will be judged, and must give way to leave God to rule His own human agencies. Its easiness rests on abundant promises of love and grace and on the pity and yearning of the Heavenly Father, greater than any earthly parent, toward those striving for the overcomer's reward, offered by One who was Prince of heaven and made infinite sacrifice to come to a world marred by the curse and lay hold of fallen humanity.

The yoke is easy because those who take it are joined with Christ as fellow workers with God in a living, sacred union. In His school they learn from Him and become Christlike in character, while entrusting their souls to Him and being kept by God's power, whereas a yoke people make for themselves is bondage. Joining with Christ is a blessed opportunity, taking His yoke meaning becoming a laborer together with God. Serving and working with Christ is a yoke shared with Him in close companionship, binding followers together under Himself the Head so each does a part while depending on Him and becoming a power for good. Workers who take up His work are blessed, their lives gain new activity as heavenly angels cooperate with them, and being yoked with Christ is the way of working with Him by which those yoked become more precious than gold. Those who would work with Him must be converted and pure in heart and character rather than relying on their own wisdom, for without Christ they can do nothing.

Wearing His yoke means abiding in Him and being one with Him, and this oneness is the only way to walk as He walked and to do medical missionary work in His manner. Bearing His yoke brings rest to those who come with burdens and gives spiritual life and power as laborers together with God, forming through sanctified cooperation a life character accepted in the heavenly kingdom and cooperating with God in doing His will on earth as in heaven. The invitation is given by Christ as spiritual teacher and genuine medical missionary who clothed divinity with humanity, laid aside kingly crown and command of angels, came in lowliness and lived as a man among men, was tempted in all points yet without sin so He knows how to succor the tempted, and was wounded for transgressions and bruised for iniquities to bring peace and healing, and hearing and obeying is known by practical experience in which medical workers following His example learn by experience what the easy yoke and light burden mean. Christ gives rest and heavenly grace to all who seek it for ministry, His yoke easy and burden light for those with greater faith in the Word, with the Holy Spirit's work done in them, learning His meekness and lowliness, finding appointed place in God's work and doing everywhere the medical missionary work Christ did for spiritual and physical need, standing firmly at duty and laboring patiently so Christ's righteousness and enriching light from God's throne are revealed to needy souls. His servants wear that one yoke when they work with Him rather than a yoke made by human beings, and working yoked with Christ the great Educator means drawing with Him and makes teachers successful. Those laboring in ministry and medical missionary work wear it by walking in humility before God and using varied gifts to bless humanity, and then God uses them as His helping hand, united in one body under Christ with every part controlled and guided by God-given wisdom, in harmony with no jealousy over Paul or Apollos or Cephas, drawing in even cords without friction, ministers giving room to fellow laborers and not measuring brethren by their own ideas, following no human devising and fastening the soul to no human leader because Christ is the Leader sent by the Father to redeem the fallen race and restore God's moral image for God's glory.

Wearing His yoke means following His example of simplicity and self-denial in service, learning from His meekness and lowliness and finding rest, and this way of life is not oppressive. That shared service provides means to establish gospel medical missionary work in many places, and for medical missionary workers following this prescription means receiving power from the Saviour to reveal His character and do sounder work. It supports a life of simplicity and godliness rather than extra show and outward attraction. Hearing this voice of God brings present and future good and makes it safe to connect with sanitarium work, helping those who learn of Him to act consistently with the name medical missionary and represent the great Medical Missionary, not charging a high price for a few minutes' work, not acting just as any other worldly physician, and doing work bearing the trace of missionary effort rather than dishonoring God by bearing the name without missionary character.

His easy yoke requires following His self-denying example in medical missionary work by standing in the counsel of God, giving thorough, neat, orderly service while refusing the high-wage plan and extravagant wages for physicians and surgeons, because Christ made Himself a donation to the world and His workers must work on the same economical, sacrificial terms. Wearing Christ's yoke means learning His meekness and lowliness, including willingness to serve without insisting on a stipulated wage or worldly display, position preserving dignity, or worldly customs. His own life of simplicity, poverty, willingness to suffer and sacrifice exemplifies the humble service His yoke calls for, serving sufferers where they are and not refusing work because it brings less pay, comfort or worldly status.

Taking His yoke means working with Him in self-denying labor to save the perishing, using powers and knowledge to bring truth, warning souls, comforting the broken-hearted and bearing fruit through daily dependence and His heavenly intercession. Christ's yoke of discipleship and service is easy and His burden light, those coming, learning His meek and lowly character and working humbly beside Him finding rest, revealing His character as they serve with Him and joining the work against sin and evil. Taking Him means following Him as pattern in complete self-sacrifice with no selfishness, as He left heavenly riches and power to live in humble humanity to enrich others through His poverty, and where this character is revealed in all His professed followers thousands more are converted. Joined to His meekness and lowliness it offers rest and calls followers to bear the cross and represent Him with self-denying gentle spirit, working with Him to save those who believe in the One the Father sent, while refusing the gospel invitation or leaving talents unused does not remove responsibility but burying them increases it. A desire for ease and lack of service are signs of failing to take up that work.

That service for saving souls can be done even by weak and newly converted people whose hearts are softened, who speak from experience and by studying Christ gain power to shine as lights and testify with joy. Christ's service is the science of saving souls, giving rest enabling weak newly converted people in unpracticed weakness to labor successfully because the service is easy and light, living in newness of life with hearts subdued by grace, speaking from what Christ has made precious rather than from studying science, with fervor, depth, songs of joy and honest recitals of grace reaching many souls, and as they work out the grace Christ works in and continue studying Christ, believing gives power to become sons of God, shine amid a crooked and perverse nation, come into His likeness with fullness of joy, and give testimonies attended by power. The rest and peace promised to the weary and heavy-laden is given through the message of truth about Him who gave His life a sacrifice for every soul, longed for by those sitting in darkness in foreign lands and in cities and towns at home, and those receiving present truth must go with untiring zeal, consecrated effort, self-denial and self-sacrifice in God's strength to carry it to all who never heard, lifting up Christ to draw sinners to Him. He longs for every soul to yoke with Him in the sacred work He came in flesh to accomplish, taken by the meek and lowly, even the ignorant if meek and lowly made whole-hearted sincere disciples fit for the Master's use comprehending His great design for a perishing world, serving as self-denying soldiers of the cross and laborers together with God doing the work of faith among the degraded to save precious souls. Many who wear it are not discerned as workers and never had ministers' hands laid on them in ordination, yet they wear the yoke and exert saving influence working in different lines to win souls.

Those who take up canvassing are invited to give themselves wholly to God, come and learn from His meek and lowly example to find rest. Accepting His invitation and learning in His school is essential to being equipped to lead others to Him, for His yoke and burden are easy and light to those who come and learn. Learning from Christ brings rest and equips for God's work, knowledge gained in His school through Scripture and the renewing power of the Holy Spirit making able to lead others to Him, and God works through those accepting His instruction. Wearing His yoke means having Christ as constant unseen holy Companion in ministry, especially in canvassing, with respect and reverence for Him and learning His pure holy ways, and with the Holy Spirit's accompaniment preparing men and women to become pastors to God's flock. Those cherishing His companionship feel holy awe and sacred joy amid trying experiences and tests, learn to pray as they work, are educated in patience, kindness, affability, helpfulness and true Christian courtesy, have words and feelings purified from harsh unkindness, use speech as precious talent for high holy work, learn to represent the divine Companion, develop through faith and are gifted with power to clothe truth with sacred beauty and speak of future immortal life.

The yoke and burden are the cross of willing unselfish service in inviting others to the feast God has prepared, including circulating truth-filled books, which may seem heavy at first but as lifted lifts the bearer bringing peace, joy and rest. Sharing His glory requires first taking up His yoke and bearing His burdens, the way to eternal crown including a race to run and battle to fight because the cross comes before the crown. The easy yoke and light burden are learned by experience only by those meeting God's conditions, obeying and honoring His law, wearing His yoke and daily learning meekness and lowliness, running the race and fighting the battles, and learning thus gives rest. That service means patient earnest labor for others and Christ's cause rather than spending time and resources on needless ornaments, unselfish effort for souls being lasting work rewarded by Christ.

Yoking with Christ in gospel work binds followers together in dependence on Him as Head so each does his part as one power for good, remedying disunity, as He joined every branch of work healing as readily as preaching. Taking the yoke elevates and sanctifies because dealing with God's great principles, making laborers together with God and fulfilling God's benevolent design of reciprocal dependence and influence, in contrast to Satan's binding men to destroy God's image and pervert the gospel. Christ's work is shared, people with different abilities joining in service, helping one another and bearing one another's burdens, and those recognizing weakness, praying and working with zeal and sharing what they receive become able to give more, joined to Christ the living Head and strengthened by His Spirit. That includes serving neighbors in mission fields at home and abroad without narrow or pharisaical principles, living love to God above all and neighbor as self, laboring side by side under His yoke in appointed work. Bearing His yoke and carrying His burden means taking up work for Him, applied to the question of why so few willingly do this work.

Daily Life and Obedience

His requirements become easy only when a person decides they cannot do as they please and still be a Christian, surrendering the will to God's will, yielding human will, appetite and inclination, giving up self-guidance and consecrating self to God's work with thoughtful kindness to others and love proving obedience.
Rest is a present daily experience in continuing service at one's post, not only in heaven nor release from duty or exertion, but loving to do God's requirements with all powers on His side, with peace of Christ and conscience no longer scourged, learning restraint and obedience from Him who is meek and lowly, overcoming unlike-Christ traits and strife for supremacy, and this rest is not idleness but work, obedience and use of powers for God amid conflict with self.
Following Him brings rest but does not remove daily self-denial and bearing the cross in His school, and only in that self-denying discipleship of consecration and sacrifice as He lived and gave Himself is rest found, fitting believers for prepared mansions, with rejoicing central and cross-bearing through suffering as well as ease lifting toward God and into fellowship with the needy.
Taking His yoke means faithfully doing duties revealed in God's Word in the entrusted place, each having an appointed place measured by what is entrusted, and refusing those duties means not being a Christian.
Parents who lead families must first come, learn, submit to His authority and obey God's highest authority as dutiful children, then faithfully educate children, and teachers and students must unite with Him in teachable obedience and discipline since human ability alone cannot convert souls, with children taught to accept the invitation and brought to Him amid inherited and learned evil tendencies and temptation.
Jesus invites teachers into His school to learn humility with teachable spirit under God's control and restraint in obedience to Christian principle under the Master-teacher, and a teacher must first learn self-control to gain discernment, govern firmly yet pleasantly and kindly, meet childhood perversity, and serve as example of obedience.
He invites learners to take His yoke and teachers to repeat it by stepping down from superiority to study the Bible together with students on the same level, depending on Christ for knowledge with nothing credited to self, asking questions, receiving new light, and growing in love, consecration and sanctification.
For students the all-important lesson is to bear the yoke of the meek Jesus, keeping hold on Him for strength against surrounding temptation, hearing and obeying to become living epistles through educators who keep the Word as textbook, remain learners with living touch with God, grow in faith in His blood and grace, and daily surrender to do His will.
All connected with the church must be humble, and those in responsibility bear it by daily wearing the yoke gracefully, growing in grace and knowledge, relying wholly on His wisdom rather than own importance, acting with love, patience, courtesy and gentleness rather than haste or force, so heavy responsibilities are not crushed upon one person nor carried by dictation and kingly authority.
No one is fitted to care for the church's spiritual health until he has put on the yoke, and wearing it with kindness and mercy, esteeming others better than self, putting away self-glorification, envy, evil surmising and contention, fits men for great and noble deeds and changes them into His likeness by the Spirit, making leaders channels of light in His school.
He is the great Burden-bearer and helper so workers must not feel the whole weight of the cause rests on them nor tax themselves to exhaustion, but come for rest, learn meekness daily, lie low at His feet, hide self in Christ, put God first, talk less of self and more of Jesus and His sufferings, stay cheerful and trustful, and trust Him rather than self or men since no human is wise or strong enough to sustain workers and He upholds all leaning whole weight without sinking.
His yoke and burdens are light unlike burdens people make when they worry, plan and manage alone or take more work than can be done wisely, and followers are to leave extra burdens with Jesus and learn to bear necessary ones with Him as He sustains, freeing them from galling self-imposed home and business loads, anxious control, and duties God did not design, which leave weariness and irritability.
When powers of darkness seem combined against God's people the easy yoke calls to trust God because the Lord has not forsaken the earth or His people even where Satan maintains warfare against resisters.
Safety is found in wearing His yoke and carrying His burdens rather than burdens invented by opposers disconnected from Him, and in keeping yoked every hour in communion with God, following where He leads, obeying His word and health light, clothed with His righteousness in meek contrition with the Spirit working through the believer toward the unfading crown.
Living for God under His care makes life's burden bearable, not promising freedom from trials or sorrow nor a crippled mourning walk, but teaching afflictions are light and momentary when attention is fixed on unseen eternal glory, with rest lost only outside Christ and yoking a privilege and exaltation.
Easy yoke does not mean no burdens or crosses, but they can be borne in His name and strength, and His provision at infinite cost makes heavenly blessedness possible in everyday life amid irritation with forbearance, love, gratitude and peace, while resting in His love brings freedom though sharing His sufferings belongs to hope of glory.
The verse belongs to His call to learn from Him whose meek character gives rest, joined with following His example in self-sacrificing service for the hungry, poor, naked and oppressed requiring self-denial at every step with consistent tenderness and love, not ease, freedom from responsibility or selfish indulgence, the work of Isaiah 58:6-11 to be tried, inspiring the follower with His spirit and life.
Self-denying service for others is His easy yoke, not ease and selfish indulgence, inspiring the follower with His spirit as He fed the hungry, healed the sick, comforted the downcast, soothed stricken hearts in deed without seeking His own interests, which is living for God's glory and uplifting others in purity against worldly selfishness and false rest.
Following His way calls for patient faithful resistance to temptation rather than anger or hasty speech, living meekly and submissively rather than complaining or accusing one another, with rest entered as ministers let His Spirit shine in self-controlled kind words making peace, laying aside superiority and refusing to undermine fellow workers since self-exaltation and cruel words offend God, and beholding Christ to think little of self rather than cherishing pride.
The verse keeps the Christian life in view for speech, teaching when to speak and be silent and avoiding excited hasty words, so words testify to partnership with Him in suffering, evident in pure speech avoiding cheap conversation and using speech to honor God and comfort the needy.
His invitation directs people to seek help from Him rather than making others bear difficulties, and burdened people should bring burdens to Christ who sustains rather than unload onto others or human resources, entrusting burdens to the Burden-bearer and not taking them back, giving cares to Him rather than carrying trials alone.
He gives rest through an easy yoke to all who come at once and learn meekness by beholding Him for strength, which means ceasing blame, complaint, brooding over injuries and evil surmising, taking self in hand, humbling self, repenting, praying for a new heart, believing, and diligently making calling and election sure for abundant entrance.
Rest and peace and happiness come only in God's appointed way by learning to wear His yoke and bear burdens, taking self in hand, disciplining impulses and will under reason, learning meekness, doing duty, submitting desires to God's rule, forgetting self, keeping the last six commandments and being a blessing instead of clinging to personal plans.
Peace, rest and happiness come from yielding the will to His will and serving Him, bringing sweet peace and no room for loneliness or self-centered complaint, and this rest is not idleness for His service involves work, obedience and using powers for God amid hard effort and conflict with self, while fretfulness comes from amusement and self-pleasing rather than doing God's will.
Submitting to Him as teacher brings rest because He is meek and lowly, and as Creator and greatest Teacher learning from Him is the path to true greatness before God, calling all to enter His school, drink at His fountain, be grounded in truth and kept converted daily, in contrast to broken cisterns and mere human authors, preparing for life with angels.
The yoke is submission worn by abiding in Christ and learning His meekness, taken by humbling and chastising self instead of criticizing brethren, while any yoke a person manufactures always proves galling.
Taking His yoke means accepting submission, restraint and obedience with meekness, and those yoked find rest and peace and can keep God's law even in smallest matters, with obedience compatible with rest rather than complaint as they draw with Him.
Taking His yoke is taking up perfect obedience and returning from the apostate's side to loyalty in keeping His holy law, an honor needing no apology but rejoicing that God gave His Son for everlasting life, with every soul accountable and knowledge of law bringing the repentant to Christ, forsaking sin and refusing to lower the standard or serve mammon.
Taking His yoke means identifying with Him, and through the Holy Spirit He unites His people, gives righteousness and makes them complete in Him, removing hindering sin and supplying weakness with strength.
His yoke of restraint and obedience is easy, and by wearing it believers find rest and are enabled to bear one another's burdens, elevated, sanctified and ennobled, abiding in Him, working in His lines in mutual love and woven together, making a school God approves to prepare a people to stand.
His yoke is perfect submission with human will submerged in God's will, taking it means coming feeling no help except in Him, trusting a crucified risen Saviour and leaving every trial with Him, and it does not make work hard since difficulty comes from pouring troubles upon finite humans instead of bringing them to Jesus.
His yoke does not make work hard, difficulty comes from pouring troubles upon finite humans instead of bringing them to Jesus, and trusting own efficiency and making flesh an arm makes work hard while trusting God makes His Word sure, since no man can hold another up and perplexities leaned wholly on Him bring companionship and present help, with service not crushing.
His service is not oppressive but an invitation into partnership under His own direction with gentle rule, so human authorities should not control, muzzle, dictate or place human judgment between Christ and the soul, but all look to Christ and the Spirit since works are under the Lord's jurisdiction.
His servants must break every yoke people seek to bind on them and stand free yoked with Him where truth stamps character, accepting no hampering yoke now or in future as a snare, being amenable to God alone as His heritage and wearing His yoke in purity.
God forbids heavy yokes people lay on servants by restrictive rules that hinder and cramp, and those responsible must remove them, trust fellow workers, credit their love and unselfish labor and leave them free to solicit means and carry forward work, as with the Madison school, repenting of binding galling yokes.
He is not pleased when people make hard what He made easy by set rules and specifications for fellow laborers, but wills and ways are to be submitted to Him with mutual love, bringing His rules into life and copying His lessons, so workers find rest and become examples not judges.
Christ never lays a yoke of carrying others' sins, His light burden brings rest while the yoke made by watching, accusing and talking of others' faults galls and gives no rest, for no human can be a sin-bearer since Jesus alone bore sin and taking it would crush life out.
Christ's yoke is easy for those who freely serve from love with whole self surrendered in physical, mental and moral powers because bought with blood, while reluctant constrained service is never easy, and wholehearted service brings happiness, freedom and His enabling cooperation.
Labor for Christ is light when it flows from love, so believers gladly live and work for Him and accept pain, toil and sacrifice for others, following His commandment-keeping example with resources entrusted as pleasure not complaint, in contrast to half-hearted divided service.
When sinners come and receive pardoning grace love springs up, every burden becomes light, duty a delight and sacrifice a pleasure, and trust brings peace and joy through the Spirit by relying on Christ's merits not self or works, anchoring to God as burdens are placed on Jesus.
His yoke is easy when a person gives up own will to be led and taught, choosing His disposition, so even heaviest spiritual labor can be borne because the Lord gives strength, power and gladness, with rest in Christ Himself not apart from Him, overcoming self-pleasing and learning amid new fields.
Bearing the yoke does not remove spiritual labor but He gives strength, power and gladness to carry it, and serving and carrying out His work brings rest, quietness, contentment and assurance of duties well done, with burdens borne without resentment or comparison and strength gained through difficulties.
Jesus lays no burden heavier than can be borne, when He bids people do duty He takes care of consequences, and He does not ask anyone to bear more than strength allows, never forsaking the desiring soul, so heavy loads should be laid on Him who can carry them rather than gathered to crushing.
Christ does not lay heavier responsibilities than preserve spirituality, His yoke stays easy only when work is kept within God-given physical and mental strength, so excess work bringing over-weariness, impatience, loss of love, courage, faith and blessing must be firmly refused.
The responsibilities the Lord gives are not overtaxing or unsuitable, self-chosen loads contrary to counsel should not be mistaken for His yoke but laid at the Saviour's feet while faithfully doing appointed work, not groaning under ungiven demands or self-fitted excessive yokes that drain and distract.
God does not want work to be drudgery, duties become irksome when the heart is not in them, so the whole heart is to be put into work as service of love with praise and highest powers, and Christ found in the work makes it light with joy and harmony in loyalty and fidelity.
He invites every soul desiring to follow to take His yoke by following His example in His footsteps in the marked path, requiring nothing He has not done, and He will live with all who heartily invite Him and bring growth from dwarfhood to full stature through faith working by love, with impatience and pride the hindrance, each standing in appointed lot.
The yoke is the life of following His example in the path He marked out, calling for humility, patience and service rather than pride and self-seeking, belonging to counting the cost of discipleship and asking no obedience He has not practiced.
Following Christ means accepting His yoke and bearing the cross, so claiming Him while refusing discipleship is inconsistent, and casting aside the yoke means leaving the narrow humble path for strange paths, which believers must not do but remain under.
Taking His yoke means joining His work and sharing concern for the needy, seeking poor and rich, distressed and sin-trapped with compassion as He identified with fallen humanity, sowing truth, establishing work with economy, relieving nearby distress for reward, and drawing evenly rather than insisting on own way.
Taking His yoke means joining Him in service, trials, humility and burden-bearing for others, and those refusing misrepresent Him, while followers prepare through study, prayer and reliance on the Spirit to win souls.
