Jesus Sighs as the Pharisees Demand a SignBible World

Matthew 16:1

The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven.

The Pharisees joined with the Sadducees against Jesus, coming to test Him by demanding a sign from heaven. What they wanted was an outward wonder, asking Him to repeat before them the mighty miraculous works He had performed across the sea that they had heard about. They presented the demand as a request for evidence and proof that He was the Son of God and of the divine identity and authority of His work and mission.

God had already attested His mission by heavenly signs, including the angels' announcement, the star that guided the wise men, and the dove and voice at His baptism. Christ had also already performed many miracles as a manifestation of divine power to testify to His work, to sweep away prejudice and inspire faith, together with convincing arguments of truth, evidence of His character and divinity, and calls to believe and repent, but the leaders ignored them because they had entrenched themselves in refusal to hear and receive the truth. The demand did not come from a sincere desire for clearer views of truth or to learn, trust, and learn how to please God, but from unbelief, pride, curiosity, self-interest and hope for temporal benefit, reflecting a shallow, outward religion.

One aim was to divert the minds of the hearers from the clearest evidences already presented, and when diversion failed they charged that His remarkable signs were worked through Beelzebub, the prince of devils. Jesus did not perform a miracle to satisfy unbelief and pride, but left their challenge unanswered. No external sign could meet their real need, which was not further intellectual evidence but spiritual renewal, and His Spirit-empowered words convicting them of sin were God's sign for their salvation.

The true sign of His divine mission is the gospel's regenerating power, as the Holy Spirit makes God's word able to free people from Satan, give a new heart, transform character, and lead them to love God and keep His commandments. Their focus on miraculous signs and perishable food missed the greater gift He offered of spiritual wisdom and grace that endure to everlasting life, in contrast to the Samaritans who accepted His teaching, recognized their need of a Saviour, and received Him without asking for a sign or seeing miracles, showing that openness to truth rather than signs leads to receiving Christ. Judas noticed that Jesus left the challenge unanswered and took it as a sign that He would not assert royal power or wage the aggressive warfare Judas expected, which fed Judas's doubts and rebellion.
