Jesus Sighs as the Pharisees Demand a Signby JGC

Matthew 16:2

He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.

The evening saying was that a red sky meant fair weather would follow, and people of the time could read the evening sky and use its appearance to foretell the weather. The saying belongs to Jesus' answer to the Pharisees and Sadducees, the religious leaders who were demanding a sign from Him. He used their skill at interpreting the weather to rebuke their failure to discern the signs of the times and the spiritual signs around them.

The contrast exposed hypocrisy, because the leaders could read ordinary signs but would not discern the evidence God had given. The signs they failed to discern clearly pointed to Christ's mission, including the coming kingdom of God. What they needed was spiritual renewal, not more outward or external proof. Christ does not work miracles to satisfy unbelief and pride; the true sign of the gospel is changed hearts and lives through God's grace and the Holy Spirit.
