Matthew 17:22

And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:

While abiding and traveling with His disciples in Galilee on the journey toward Capernaum and Jerusalem, Jesus continued and opened further the teaching given earlier in the chapter by opening up future scenes before them. It was there in Galilee that He told them He would be betrayed into human hands. Calling Himself the Son of man, He foretold that He would be betrayed into the hands of men, meaning into the hands of His enemies, in rejection and crucifixion by the Jews to be put to death in Jerusalem.

Along with His death He foretold that He would rise again on the third day, a prediction certain to be fulfilled. He gave this as special instruction to the first disciples to prepare them for the trial and test of faith they must endure. It was to prepare their minds for the suffering and scenes before Him, telling them He was to go up to Jerusalem to be put to death and to rise again. He wanted them to discuss and understand this coming test, so His words could comfort them in their grief and disappointment.

The disciples did not at the time understand, comprehend, receive, or remember His words, including failing to remember the promise of the resurrection. Sorrow fell upon them at what He foretold, with the shadow of a great sorrow and deep grief. Yet this sorrow coexisted with rivalry, as a spirit of rivalry still found place in their hearts and they disputed among themselves who should be greatest in the kingdom. They still hoped that His arrival in Jerusalem meant the kingdom was about to be established, and soon after they reached Capernaum their attention turned to a challenge about loyalty to the temple.
