Matthew 19:3

The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

The question put to Jesus was a deliberate test, asking whether a man is permitted to put away his wife for any reason whatever. The larger answer to which that question belongs places marriage under a higher law than the laws of the land, so a woman may be legally divorced by civil law and yet not divorced in the sight of God, and even where the laws of the land grant a divorce the two are still husband and wife in Bible light according to the laws of God. There is only one sin, adultery, that can place a husband or wife in a position to be free from the marriage vow in the sight of God. If a woman obtains a divorce legally on the ground that her husband was guilty of adultery, then she is free to be married to whom she chooses, but without that ground she has no right to marry another man and is not free to marry again. Marriage vows are therefore not to be set aside lightly, and lack of love, bad counsel, or even a claim of having been deceived into the marriage does not by itself supply grounds for divorce once the marriage oath was made.
