Matthew 22:24
Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
The verse belongs to the artful questions Christ's opponents put to Him in hopes of trapping Him. It states the Sadducees' case of a man who dies without children, whose brother marries the widow to raise up offspring and continue the dead brother's line. They used this earthly marriage arrangement to argue that resurrection would restore earthly marriage, relationships, and the affairs of life, thereby making resurrection seem absurd. Their argument assumed that life after resurrection would continue just as it had before death.
Jesus showed that assumption was false, for those who are resurrected do not marry or resume earthly life as before. His plain, intelligent answers to such questions brought precious light to the people and sowed seeds of truth. In its setting the verse stands among warnings about the consequences of rejecting the Son of God, applying not only to the Jews then addressed but to people in every age who refuse Christ as Redeemer, so that unless they repent the foreshadowed judgment will be theirs.
